Westminstenders: Arse about Face

Everything about Brexit seems to have been done wrongly.

Setting red lines to rule out a compromise

The attempt to use executive power to trigger A50, that resulted in a court case

Triggering A50 before knowing what the UK wanted

Agreeing to the backstop before any Tory MP understood the GFA

Appointing a Brexit minister before checking he understood where Dover was.

May going on about NI and pissing off the DUP before they were just about to climb down.

Having a Meaningless Vote repeatedly with a gun to head.

Contempt of Parliament and just general fucking up.

Tonight, 3 days before we were due to leave the HoC finally sat down to decide what Brexit outcomes they thought would be a good idea - more than 2years after that should have happened.

And we now we are told the meaningful vote might be may even more meaningless by being wrapped up in the illusive Withdrawal Agreement Implimentation Bill.

Farce doesn't even cover it.

Anyway Indicative Vote results incoming in approx 15 mins.

Thank you Red for continuing to put up these threads - I just wish I could keep up with them! Between Politics Live, Twitter and trying to have a life outside Brexit, my head is spinning. I think I need to lay in more Gin so that I can drown my sorrows if we crash out on 12th April, (or 22nd May or almost any date you care to name) or celebrate if we don't !

prettybird · 28/03/2019 17:27

I just cannot thole the Attorney General's tone and manner of speaking Angry

dontcallmelen · 28/03/2019 17:35

My Dh is the same, he thinks revoke will happen as well unfortunately I do not share his optimism.

DGRossetti · 28/03/2019 17:35

Something for the more legally minded ...

^We note, first of all, that a failure to hold EP elections in the UK
would result neither in the expulsion of the UK from the EU, nor in the
invalidity of future acts of the EP.^

When you compare the work of lots of MPs to people working in the business world they come out at David Brent standard at best imo.

Littlespaces · 28/03/2019 17:41

He comes from the point of view that if Brexit was a project at work it wouldn't get past the first gate review.

He is speaking as a sensible person.

The trouble is that a lot of people have egos, careers, money and reputations to lose & will let a shit deal go through to save their own sorry behinds.

Songsofexperience · 28/03/2019 17:45

Not my MP. I can't see him getting re-elected ever (strong remain area, no deal-er)

woman19 · 28/03/2019 17:45

Labour is questioning the legality of proposed WA tomorrow, and Vaz says they won't not supporting tabling of it ( I think this is the right term).

Absolutely startling scenes in HOC right now.

As we have to rely on AG's pronouncements on legality of it.

Absolute shit storm.

woman19 · 28/03/2019 17:46

'won't be supporting'

woman19 · 28/03/2019 17:50

@Keir_Starmer

There are four key reasons why you cannot separate the Withdrawal Agreement from the Political Declaration. 1/

First, the Article 50 process explicitly states that the EU and member state must negotiate an agreement “setting out the arrangements for its withdrawal, taking account of the framework for its future relationship with the Union”. 2/

Second, in their letter of 14 January Presidents Tusk and Juncker said: “As for the link between the Withdrawal Agreement and the Political Declaration….it can be made clear that these two documents, while being of a different nature, are part of the same negotiated package.” 3/

Third, the PM has said the two documents should be treated as one.

On 14 January she said “the link between [the two documents] means that the commitments of one cannot be banked without the commitments of the other. The EU has been clear that they come as a package.” 4/

Fourth, following the PM’s commitment yesterday to resign before the next phase of negotiations begin, if the withdrawal agreement passes without a credible plan for what happens next then Brexit is going to be determined by the outcome of the next Tory leadership contest. 5/

What the Government is doing is not in the national interest and that’s why we will not support it tomorrow. 6/

NoWordForFluffy · 28/03/2019 17:52

Keir speaks sense!

QuentinWinters · 28/03/2019 17:56

I just heard someone on the radio say that if the WA passes tomorrow then that could negate the need for a meaningful vote at all Shock Not sure how a PV is undemocratic but undertaking some sleight of hand to circumvent parliament is totally fine.

Btw I believe the word we need for politicians if they let accidental fuck-up no deal happen is "negligent"

I'm pretty sure there were so many abstentions on various votes yesterday because some MPs want to distance themselves from the mess. They need to grow some ovaries and start representing the best interests of their constituents

LoudBatPerson · 28/03/2019 18:07

I am actually shocked, I thought I couldn't be shocked anymore by this farce but here I am.

If this gets through, it will be a sad day for our parliament.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/03/2019 18:10

DG What I note in that opinion is that the EU could not impose any meaningful sanctions on a leaving country that didn't hold EP elections.

Which increases the risk to the EU !

The UK could make life very awkward for the EP and cause legal cases to be brought too the ECJ,
wasting time & damaging EP credibility, even if the cases were then lost
Holding up the EP to ransom, to get a better deal ....

I doubt the EU would take the risk when they already know the twisted weasels they are negotiating with in the UK

prettybird · 28/03/2019 18:11

The SNP need to keep to the actual topic of whether or not there should be a sitting tomorrow. Hmm

prettybird · 28/03/2019 18:17

Isn't it horrible that we now describe the UK as "the twisted weasels they [ie the EU] are negotiating with" Sad

BercowsSilkTie · 28/03/2019 18:18

Oh crap, what have I missed during homework and dinner?

BigChocFrenzy · 28/03/2019 18:18

pretty That's only the politicians
Tusk obviously has respect for the PV marchers and the 6 million who signed the petition
so I'm sure they distinguish between people and weasels

PengwingsPenglings · 28/03/2019 18:21

Delurking (I have posted a little before but have name-changed since then). I was talking to a Leaver friend earlier, who brought Brexit up I don't anymore because my blood pressure can't take it and her POV was quite interesting. She said she has no idea who's going to be next Tory leader and thinks they're all crap. She doesn't think they'll win a general election anytime soon. She's gone off Boris as well good.

Most interesting to me was the fact that her dad, a Conservative member and leaver signed the petition to revoke article 50. His logic was if the government have done so badly now, how will they be able to handle more negotiations? And she said she couldn't argue with it.

I'm so bloody tired of it, though. Not in a "just get on with it way", but it's exhausting trying to keep up. Every day I get more angry and ashamed of Brexit. I'm really grateful to you all on this thread for making it easier to follow.

Sostenueto · 28/03/2019 18:21

I am totally gobsmacked! Shock
