The "invisible border" just means in the event of No Deal is that we probably won't be seeing physical infrastructure

However, there will be goods checks set back from the border, possible on main roads on which large truck travel.
There would probably be a lot of checks at factory gates and then Customs- sealed vehicles to travel through the border

If anyone thinks that doesn't matter, it is the kind of thing the DUP refused for GB / NI when Barnier suggested it months ago

BigChocFrenzy · 26/03/2019 14:02

GB / NI Backstop

The "invisible" backstop the DUP refuse^:

NI exports to GB would face no changes to current system

GB exports to NI trade with NI-only backstop exülained by Barnier

https://www.politico.eu/article/michel-barniers-zen-brexit/

"The EU proposes to carry out these checks in the least intrusive way possible.

For customs and VAT checks, we propose using the existing customs transit procedures to avoid doing checks at a physical border point.

Let me be more specific on this point,
because I think many of your companies are or could be concerned by these future relations.

Companies in the rest of the U.K. would fill in their customs declarations online and in advance when shipping bulk goods to Northern Ireland.

The only visible systematic checks between Northern Ireland and the rest of the U.K. would involve scanning the barcodes on the lorries or containers, which could be done on ferries or in transit ports."

Barnier noted that similar internal checks already take place as a matter of routine, with no political worries.

“These arrangements already exist within EU member states, in many of our countries,
in particular those with islands, for example between mainland Spain and the Canary Islands"

Uh oh. DUP's Sammy Wilson with an absolute hammer blow to PM's deal.

Says a 1 year Brexit delay would be a "better strategy than volunteering to be locked into the prison of the withdrawal deal with the cell door key in the pocket of Michel Barnier".

BigChocFrenzy · 26/03/2019 14:08

Whatever deal we have, there will be a backstop

No Parliament can bind its successor, or even itself. Hence a backstop, which is binding in international law^

Even if - dreaming - Dominic Grieve became PM and promised to go for SM+CU, the EU know that bhe could be replaced the next day by a Brexiter who would throw out everything.

It is pointless scheming to dump the backstop, when the EU will never agree to dump member Ireland in favour of a non-member.

Only the PD can be fundamentally renegotiated; the main elements of the WA will remain, especially the backstop

Anyone who can't accept a backstop is left with a choice between Revoke and No Deal

woodpigeons · 26/03/2019 14:11

I got revoke.
Was just wondering if anyone knows what the Irish border was like in 1964 as I went youth hosteling then in Northern Ireland when I was 16.
I didn’t really know anything except I knew there was a border and we couldn’t cross it because didn’t have passports. One day we came to a border town. I can’t remember its name.
We were walking by a lake and a man in a rowing boat offered to take us over the border and bring us back. It was quite exciting as it was the first time I’d been ‘abroad’.
We paid him, couldn’t have been much as we had very little money, the town over the border seemed quite festive with gift shops and people having rides in horse drawn traps.
We also wandered around Belfast on the day we arrived by ferry early in the morning as the youth hostel wouldn’t let us in. Did the same on the way back as we didn’t leave until the evening.

Sostenueto · 26/03/2019 14:11

The government is trying to steal time off the indicative votes tomorrow and no guarantee of extra time on another day for them either. Loathsome could not even say if Easter recess is going to be cancelled or when WA going to be presented.( or not)

bellinisurge · 26/03/2019 14:11

Sammy Wilson is using typical DUP No No No speak where everyone who isn't DUP is a complete bastard verging on criminal.
This is how those twats talk.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/03/2019 14:11

This is why ANY Brexit is just a shit deal

Brexit means losing many existing EU benefits and also being lumbered with a backstop that further strains the Disunited Kingdom

Brexit has always meant the accelerated dissolution of the UK

SisterMichael · 26/03/2019 14:12

Just want to step in and say I think Ariana Grande’s been through enough without getting blamed for Brexit too! Now Ed Sheeran on the other hand...

BigChocFrenzy · 26/03/2019 14:13

Can't help wondering if ERG has left it too late to jump back on board. A week ago (before Bercow) they might have pushed her deal over the line. Now everyone can see other prizes on offer.

Brexit: Three ministers call for Article 50 to be revoked

Emboldened by the march and the petition, or scared of the No Deal abyss ?
All junior ministers so far though, no Cabinte ministers yet - publicly at least.

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/brexit-three-ministers-call-for-article-50-to-be-revoked-gqrsk37vg

Three ministers backed revoking Article 50 as MPs began another week of desperately searching for a way out of the parliamentary deadlock.
Mark Field, a Foreign Office minister, became the first member of the government to speak openly in favour of aborting the Brexit process, telling BBC Radio 4’s Westminster Hour last night:
“I would be happy to revoke Article 50.

“I appreciate that is probably a minority view < NOT among voters > but if we get to this utter paralysis

  • and I sincerely hope that in the next 48, 72 hours we do not -
then if that becomes an option that’s an option that I would personally take.”

Another senior minister told The Times:
“It’s apocalyptic. I am now in favour of revocation.”

BigChocFrenzy · 26/03/2019 14:28

Tom Newton Dunn@tnewtondunn

Massive moment.
The expectation among Tory grandees now is that PM uses the below to set a date for her resignation.

......
Aubrey Allegretti@breeallegretti

Theresa May will address Tory MPs at the 1922 committee at 5pm tomorrow.

CurrerBell · 26/03/2019 14:29

Given the number of people in each constituency signing the #RevokeArticle50 petition, it might be worth emailing your MP and asking them to Revoke. Especially if the number of signatures exceeds their majority. Grin

Perhaps use this as a template: justmakeitstop.co.uk/
