You know, the amount of effort some leavers are putting into trying to discredit the petition, you'd think they were worried about it for some reason!

Same as a second ref- they simultaneously claim that they will get a massive landslide and that they don't want the 2nd ref. A massive landslide would put the issue to bed once and for all, surely.

prettybird · 22/03/2019 09:45

I have a very foreign sounding name - my surname is German (an ancestor left Germany in the 16th century Confused) and the shortening I use for my first name looks German.

I am nevertheless a UK citizen and have voted in every election at every level and every referendum since I was able to in 1979 (except one when I was away on business in the days when it took a while to organise a postal vote).

I have every entitlement to sign this petition and those that assume that I am a foreign bot or bit entitled to vote can go take a running jump Angry

It's one small gesture to remind May (not that she listens to anyone except the ERG Hmm) and more importantly the rest of the world that she does NOT speak in MY name Smile

Frequency · 22/03/2019 09:46

I know this is an unpopular opinion and is anecdotal but the only leave voters I know are either thick, racist or both. One of them told me we only lost the Empire because of the EU and we'll be able to get it back when we leave. Also, he thinks we'll make money from steel and coal (the nasty EU ruined the steel and coal industry. It had nothing to do with China or the rise of nuclear power) once we leave and will be more prosperous than ever.

lonelyplanetmum · 22/03/2019 09:49

The point of a petition is not to be a proxy referendum...[ both the petition and the march are ] about communicating a mood - contrary to what the PM tells the world, we are not all begging to be taken off the Brexit cliff asap

This exactly.

On this occasion it doesn't matter if there's some inaccuracies in petition numbers. Overall it's being signed by swathes of discontented citizens all who know we need a rethink. The patterns of signatures across the country are overall authentic too.

It's an important rough and ready way of communicating a profound national dissatisfaction. Sign it and send to friends who you know will too!

Why not email Number 10 as well ..

I do not care for those who pollute social media with unproven shite, I know what I think and nobody will change my mind with lies. Brexit has already affected me and the family business so that is why tonight I'm getting on a train at St Erth to go up to Paddington for the march, haven't got a clue where I'm going from there but I'm sure I can work it out as it's worth it to me because I feel I have to do something other than sit on my arse squabbling and name calling on a screen.

IceRebel · 22/03/2019 09:51

I can well believe there are people like that out there. The day after the vote someone asked me if it meant we would get a bank holiday for St George's day. I don't think some people have moved on from that way of thinking, despite the mess that is plain to see.

AdvancedAvoider · 22/03/2019 09:53

PortiaCastis · 22/03/2019 09:53

Grin Grin lost the empire because of the eu has made me laugh GrinGrinGrin

frankbegbie · 22/03/2019 09:56

Certainly makes you suspicious.

TheElementsSong · 22/03/2019 09:58

Another reminder, there will be bots attempting to discredit this petition - have a watch of this:

mobile.twitter.com/mikegalsworthy/status/1108747868267905024

And then go ahead SIGN and SHARE this petition to everybody you know!

If we can't reduce the noise, we have to increase the signal!

Foreign-Sounding Names?

Farage?

Abra1de · 22/03/2019 10:02

Leavers I know include a philosophy don and an Oxbridge languages graduate. Plus a solicitor and some accountants.

Very dangerous to make assumptions.

(I’m a remainer.)

lonelyplanetmum · 22/03/2019 10:08

Do you think if we mass bombarded no 10 it would help?

Yes I do - It can't do any harm.

I think governments monitor overall quantity of emails, protests, petitions. It's a numbers game.

At the end of the day very concerned voters have been completely ignored for three years.

Do everything to show discontent:

• sign up to the independent group, Green, LibDem alerters. Even if you don't agree with their other politics the numbers get reported.

• email number 10

• email any politicians who stand up and say sensible stuff to thank them

• like or join 48% groups on FB, scientists for the EU, end the chaos, NHS against Brexit

• Sign the petition

• wander in the proximity of the march for an hour

• crowd fund campaigns to help people march, support led by donkeys campaign

Just do anything -swell numbers. That's what I think anyway. Spend 5 or 10 or 30 mins a day.

Remain supporting people I know going on the march include two teachers, an NHS consultant, two barristers, two solicitors, an HR person and a member of kitchen staff from a local pub.

I wish I could be there on Saturday- I am sure the event will boost the petition numbers too.

prettybird · 22/03/2019 11:02

Saw someone (a Labour MEP?) on "All Out Politics" say the the PM's point-blank refusal to hold a 2nd referendum because it would be an affront to democracy as "the people have spoken" is actually the antithesis of democracy.

She - and those that oppose a 2nd referendum (he was Labour, so he didn't mention that his own leader is one of these Wink) - are effectively saying, "We gave you the chance to speak once, 3 years ago, now shut up and go away" SadAngry

We need to be making that precise point more often Smile

mummmy2017 · 22/03/2019 11:05

So funny, mumsnetters have admitted the children, even pets are signing...

Well educated does not = intelligent.
Poorly educated does not = thick or hard of thinking.
