Teenagers should be allowed to sign if they wish, IMO

Abra1de · 22/03/2019 14:45

Many MNers don’t even trust them to walk home from school or look after younger siblings for an hour. Many don’t even trust them to choose their own university course.

TheWaiting · 22/03/2019 14:45

Noectremes, I remember the leave voter in Wales asking the journalist what the EU has ever done for him or where he lived. The journalist pointed out the new link rd and community centre both built with Eu grants.

But I don’t blame him for that. I actually blame the Remain campaign. Why, in areas like that who have benefitted so much from EU grants, where they not on the ground there explaining to people the benefits their communities had seen?

EcclesThePeacock · 22/03/2019 14:46

If teenagers aren't supposed to sign U.K.gov petitions, the website would surely say so.

TheWaiting · 22/03/2019 14:47

Sorry for sp and grammar ^

I spoke too soon, the constituency totals have now been updated.

Miljah · 22/03/2019 14:51

I agree, re 15/16 year olds signing.

My own 17 year old (a month short of 18) is more conversant with the benefits of EU membership (and the responsibilities that go with it) than practically all the Leavers I know (which admittedly, isn't many)- none of whom have taken the least bit of interest in events from June 23rd 2016 to now. Grenade lobbed, zero fucks given. Yet.

So we are doing everything we can to ensure he is on the electoral roll asap.

In fact, I would like to see A50 revoked, then, in time, a credible, legal re-run of the referendum based on facts, with a minimum participation rate, and a sensible percentage to 'win'. I am not nor have ever been a fan of The Referendum as it's too 'easy'; and, last time I looked, I elect MPs to represent me. However, given that this farce began as an ill-conceived (non-binding) referendum, maybe putting it to bed needs to be via referendum.

But I would grudgingly accept that referendum result as being representative of The Will Of The People. But, I would also like these to be on that day, votes for 16-17 year olds, run concurrently but separately.

You never know, the strength of that feeling might give some old gimmers cause to pause and reflect on who's going to be forming government policy, and doling out government money, down the track if the old summarily shaft the young again, now. Loss of a free bus pass will be the least of their worries.

Frequency · 22/03/2019 14:51

My fifteen year old signed it at school. They learned about both petitions in PHSE and were given the time to get their phones out to sign either petition. DD1 decided to sign the remain as did most of classmates. Only one person admitted to signing the no-deal one, a few opted not to sign either as didn't really understand the issue.

I only learned this when she clocked me checking the results yesterday and asked how it was doing. She wants to remain because she wants the option to work and study in Paris and the art school her sister attends is funded by the EU. She doesn't really understand the economical/political arguments but is worried about her future without EU grants funding local colleges/youth projects.

I spoke too soon, the constituency totals have now been updated

The map has been updated - my constituency went from under 2K to over 5K in one fell swoop Grin

GiantKitten · 22/03/2019 14:57

Bristol West has shot up from just under 9000 to over 21000!

DioneTheDiabolist · 22/03/2019 15:07

The number in my constituency has trebled in the last hour!Grin

Verynice · 22/03/2019 15:18

There is a lot of complaining and ridiculing of this petition on comments on news articles about it on FB. E.g. one Romanian guy, saying his brother who never set foot in the UK has signed it. Several saying they've signed multiple times, another saying he got the BT phone book out and made multiple emails to sign and a lot of people saying that a strong majority are not in the UK (whether expats or not I don't know). And TM has apparently said she doesn't care.

EcclesThePeacock · 22/03/2019 15:18

Whew... I was getting worried about the % from U.K. constituencies shown in gas ~40%, its now a sensible 94%. There may be a few overseas people signing who shouldn't but I'd hope the 6% there is mostly legitimate expats and most of the population of Gibraltar. (Wtf happened about Gibraltar?)

EcclesThePeacock · 22/03/2019 15:19

'shown in gas' ... showing as

Verynice · 22/03/2019 15:19

Does anyone have a link to that list of the constituencies again pretty please? I've closed the webpage unfortunately

EcclesThePeacock · 22/03/2019 15:24

This one?
www.livefrombrexit.com/petitions/241584

I've lost my link for the heatmap, but the list is presumably the same data.

DioneTheDiabolist · 22/03/2019 15:28

You do know FB is not an accurate or credible news source Verynice? Indeed it has been heavily criticised for its part in propagating fake news.

brizzlemint · 22/03/2019 15:44

Go Bristol West Grin

Verynice · 22/03/2019 15:58

Yes thanks Eccles.

Verynice · 22/03/2019 15:58

The comments are very unlike the mood here. Very pro Brexit.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 22/03/2019 16:00

Wtf happened about Gibraltar

they were ignored.

TheElementsSong · 22/03/2019 16:04

Once again: there will be bots signing this petition. This is deliberate so as to allow naysayers to cast doubt, as we are indeed seeing here.

Despite what the naysayers are saying, the answer is NOT to not sign. Exactly the opposite is case. SIGN AND SHARE!

We can’t reduce the noise, so we must increase the SIGNAL!

lonelyplanetmum · 22/03/2019 16:11

There's a margin of error in all petitions but only of a few thousand maybe?

Most of the 3 million of the signatures are authentic and it's a small way of those of us who've been ignored for three years having a voice.

Sign the petition if you think we need a rethink.

MrPan · 22/03/2019 16:11
