Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

NEW: updated draft conclusions: 'EUCO agrees to an extension to 22 May, provided WA is approved by the HoC next week. If the WA is not approved by the HoC next week, EUCO agrees to an extension until 12 April, expects UK to indicate a way forward for the consideration of EUCO'

That. Could not not be worse for me, if it tried.

goes to a corner to whimper

Why? Would it be worse if we crashed out on 29th?

TheABC · 21/03/2019 21:27

@GD12 That's almost kindly of the EU. Given how exasperated they are with us, it's very reasonable, taking into account the EU elections.

I am now wondering if Theresa May will still be around by the 12th April.

^"Ryan Shorthouse, the director of the Bright Blue independent conservative thinktank, said it was “clear that a lot of senior politicians are doing a lot more speeches, social media and being a lot more independent minded” with an eye on the leadership.

An adviser involved in one of the campaigns said: “You have cabinet ministers going round offering people jobs and May has not even resigned yet. It is fair to say the leadership race is already under way.”^

What's your ideal position redtoothbrush?

How bad is it for you?

GD12 · 21/03/2019 21:27

Crash out on March 29 or April 12 not much difference.

GD12 · 21/03/2019 21:28

@TheABC it's almost an invite to MPs to "take back control".

Littlespaces · 21/03/2019 21:30

Could you tell your parents I am proud of them too Flowerpower? They built a bridge between family members.

I wish my Dad would do this as he has totally lost my respect. He can see it in my eyes.

Horehound · 21/03/2019 21:30

It doesnt say crash out. They are avoiding it for the 29th and will avoid it forever more. People's vote if it doesn't get passed expect.

bellinisurge · 21/03/2019 21:30

Did I dream it [shudder] or is it better for rich folk if we crash out in this financial year rather than the next one. Aren't there new tax rules coming into force that apply to the super minted from 1 April 2019.

pepinana · 21/03/2019 21:32

EUCO treating us with more consideration than we deserve.

I'm so embarassed to be British right now.

Icantreachthepretzels · 21/03/2019 21:32

Depends on personal circs. I imagine is bad for red re her house. It;s worse for me because 30th March is the start of the easter hols here in Leeds. I could have stayed holed up at home and avoided all the initial fallout.
By 12th April we're headed back to work. I don't want to leave my home empty if chaos is going on.
It's better for my mum though because she is hoping to go on holiday over our easter hols. Delayed brexit will mean she can get the plane ... unclear as to whether she'll make it back or not, though.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 21:32

Cos I'm betting that's pretty much likely to be the week we move with the way things are going!

Pass the WA you bastards or go for EU elections for my sanity!!!

Fucks sakes, I’m supposed to be getting on a plane to Italy on 13 April.

HepzibahHumbug · 21/03/2019 21:35

^^We are going to need another thread tonight ...

Excuse me for asking: when do you know thread is full? Why can't it just go on forever? (Well I can see why actch) but when do you know when to stop?

Are there rules or is it vaguer than that?

CordeliaEarhart · 21/03/2019 21:35

Threads have a maximum of 1000 posts on MN.

OublietteBravo · 21/03/2019 21:36

EUCO are being extremely patient.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2019 21:36

red Moving should be ok
There really shouldn't be petrol shortages, at least not in week 1.

GD12 · 21/03/2019 21:37

TalkinPaece · 21/03/2019 21:39

Crash out now heads upwards of 75%

BestIsWest · 21/03/2019 21:41

Why do you think we won’t be able to access AWS in the event of crashing out? Their Eu-west-2 region is London based.

jessicawessica · 21/03/2019 21:41

I don't see the point in signing the petition.....it's not like the government are going to take any notice of it.

TheMostBoringPersonEver · 21/03/2019 21:42

Again it amazes me the speed that we get news through social media and that we are essentially running parliament communications through twitter, surely this should be running on the news, and or May making a statement?
Although on the other hand I would hate to NOT know what was going on and be constantly misled by a government who beleive in keeping its people in the dark

Songsofexperience · 21/03/2019 21:42

Oh no... I'm travelling again on the 12th and I didn't want to be in a different country from the kids at that time...
