Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

Icanreach 1.75 mill. Is that real??

Nope it’s over 1,960,000 now

HazardGhost · 21/03/2019 22:29

singingbaboo I had to leave the room so DP wouldn't see me tearing up at my phone! I'll be thinking about you and sending all my love. (To everyone else whose going I'm sending my love to you to.)

Also I argued with DP this morning as well but in reverse to you Grin He was understandably frustrated (not brexit related) and I had no patience with him because I was wound up and distracted about brexit 😂

It's very hard keeping a cool head when you are busy trying to come up with solutions to soften the impact of chaos.

DP this morning thinking: I'm mantruming over being ill and unmanly
Me: HOW AM I MEANT TO FEED US FRESH FOOD DURING A HUNGER GAP AND NO EU VEGETABLES! HOW AM I MEANT TO INVENT MEDICATIONS OUT OF THIN AIR! HOW DO I STOP THE NHS FAILING!

Oh the joys of 2019.

Anyway... singing's DH its not MN it is TM that's the problem and your lovely wife is marching to try and stop the problem. And people all across the country are grateful to people like her. And yes we may drive her a bit crazy on the thread but hey it's nice to be informed Wink

Icantreachthepretzels · 21/03/2019 22:30

Less than 40 000 needed sigs to get to 2 million. I might have over estimated when I said it would take us until midnight.

whatisheupto · 21/03/2019 22:32

@GD12
The EU are inviting the UK to get rid of May. When her deal is voted down next week, MPs have a choice. They can keep her in power and know she's running the clock down to a no deal on 12 April or they can get rid of her or use Cooper Boles to say they'll be taking part in EU elex before April 11. It's very clever by the EU, it backs the UK parties into a corner. If Labour do nothing and don't vote for elex then they're aiding a no deal. If May does nothing then she's heading for a no deal. It's very, very clever and makes the UK choose. If the UK takes part in the elex and there's a long delay, Brexit is dead.

Spot on! Are you a correspondent?!

prettybird · 21/03/2019 22:33

Who else finds it deliciously ironic that after May tried to "go over the heads" of MPs yesterday in her inflammatory "Address to the Nation", today the E27 work up a way to go "over her head" and propose routes that Parliament should it accept the challenge could take to avoid the most damaging of Brexits? Grin

tobee · 21/03/2019 22:33

So Laura Kuenessburg on the ten o'clock news saying that they might not bring MV 3 back next week because they won't until they can be sure it will be passed.

April 12th not much longer to manage that

So in @faisalislam's report just now, Vince Cable claimed that Theresa May in her meeting with opposition leaders said that "the people voted for pain" when asked about the damage No Deal might wreak.

Someone needs to dig out this clip

I'm so gobsmacked I'm wondering whether I misheard what Cable said

GD12 · 21/03/2019 22:34

Lol, no I'm not a correspondent.

NoWordForFluffy · 21/03/2019 22:36

But it won't pass, so it needs bringing ASAP so an alternate approach can be planned. What the actual fuck is going on?

TalkinPaece · 21/03/2019 22:36

whatisheupto · 21/03/2019 22:36

Oh. Well you summarise beautifully!

GD12 · 21/03/2019 22:36

She's has to have the MV next week....

A senior EU official tells me that on the basis of what has been decided, "in agreement with PM May":

  • either WA approved by UK MPs next week, then orderly Brexit on 22 May

or

  • 12 April disorderly Brexit, or request for another extension
GD12 · 21/03/2019 22:36

^^^That's by @AlbertoNardelli

dreichuplands · 21/03/2019 22:37

Can the cooper/boles amendments move forward next week if the MV isn't brought again?
Or can parliament take some other kind of legally binding action by itself without the government doing anything?

SparklySneakers · 21/03/2019 22:37

I hope someone over in Brussels knows what they are doing and are going to save us. Obviously TM isn't that person.

prettybird · 21/03/2019 22:38

Over 2 million before the press conference? Wink Wouldn't that stick it to May and Loathsome?! Grin

WaterQuarter · 21/03/2019 22:38

petition just hit 2 million

NoWordForFluffy · 21/03/2019 22:38

Just over 2 million now. Time for bed!

LadyGregorysToothbrush · 21/03/2019 22:38

Or can parliament take some other kind of legally binding action by itself without the government doing anything?

I think that’s what the Letwin et al motion on Monday is designed to enable.

EU27 responds to UK requests in a positive spirit and:

agrees to Art. 50 extension until 22 May if Withdrawal Agreement approved next week

if not agreed next week then extension until 12 April

approves ‘Strasbourg Agreement’

continues no-deal preparations
