Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

Sign it anyway so you can look back and say you tried.

TalkinPaece · 21/03/2019 21:42

@jessicawessica
If we do not sign
and we do not march
they will be able to pretend that we are not angry

woodpigeons · 21/03/2019 21:43

I have been quite sanguine so far but am now totally stressed.
I have muslims, black and mixed race people in my immediate family. Some could have residency in other countries but tbh they would be worse than even the uk after Brexit.
It’s a horrible waiting game and I’m going to log off now, take my meds and try to read a book.
See you all tomorrow, hopefully with better news.

TokyoSushi · 21/03/2019 21:44

It looks like we might be moving on 29th March @redtoothbrush which could be, erm, fun

It's like the EUCO are treating us like a confused child, don't worry my loves, you've clearly got no fucking clue what to do so let us tell you.

What a shit show

Horehound · 21/03/2019 21:44

Crash out now heads upwards of 75% so they give us more time and it goes up up? Confused

jessicawessica · 21/03/2019 21:45

They already know we are angry but do you honestly think they care?

TalkinPaece · 21/03/2019 21:46

horehound
It all depends on what you think the odds of the WA being passed by the HoC are
because without that its crash out

TheMostBoringPersonEver · 21/03/2019 21:47

TiP - why is that? ANd where is it coming from?

Anyone checked the pound lately?

borntobequiet · 21/03/2019 21:48

There’s not a lot anyone can do but if one does what one can it helps. Email MPs, sign petitions, march. If you don’t express an opinion, people will claim you don’t have one, and carry on regardless of any effect on you.

Icantreachthepretzels · 21/03/2019 21:49

don't see the point in signing the petition.....it's not like the government are going to take any notice of it.

One day, people will look back on this clusterfuck and wonder why no one raised their voices to stop it. The petition is proof that some people did.
Everyday, the politicians tell us that overwhelmingly people are getting behind brexit and just want them to 'get on with it' - the petition is proof that they are lying.

It is part of the historical record of what is being done to us and how we feel about it - if absolutely nothing else.
But many people like to be able to look themselves in the mirror and say they did all they could - even it achieved nothing. For some people, simply knowing they did their bit is enough to make an action worthwhile.

plus what TiP said.

Tanith · 21/03/2019 21:49

"They already know we are angry but do you honestly think they care?"

Not in Europe, they don't. I want to signal to the EU and their citizens that this is not in my name!

TheMostBoringPersonEver · 21/03/2019 21:49

Just saw this retweeted and it made me giggle:

Jonathan Spink

@spink_jonathan

Replying to @adamfleming
UK: We'd like an extension till the end of May
EU: The month or the person?
UK:... Yes

Icantreachthepretzels · 21/03/2019 21:51

1.75 million. We are ten percent of the way there.

Horehound · 21/03/2019 21:51

But theres a reason they say if its not passed then we give you even more time. Basically seems to me No deal is not an option. They give us 2 weeks for another opportunity be that a new deal, a revoke or a crash out. But personally, I don't think a no deal is going to happen.

CordeliaEarhart · 21/03/2019 21:52

My "most likely outcome" thinking is that TM will not even offer MV3 until approx 11th April.

keepforgettingmyusername · 21/03/2019 21:54

@jessicawessica they aren't going to take any notice of you sitting on your hands not saying anything either. Are you really so apathetic that you won't take 15 seconds to make your voice heard? You don't even have to move anything, apart from your thumbs.

TatianaLarina · 21/03/2019 21:54

This made me laugh:

Alex Andreou @sturdyAlex

May asks for extension to 30/6.

EU make a draft offer of extension to the 23/5.

May addresses the EU for 90 minutes.

EU change their offer to 7/5

Please someone stop her.

TatianaLarina · 21/03/2019 21:55

Seriously, we all just want the Maybot to stop now - unplug her.

Horehound · 21/03/2019 21:55

CordeliaEarhart no, it has to be next week or we break terms of the extension...

CordeliaEarhart · 21/03/2019 21:55

They can't give another extension unless we vote in EP elections.

Icantreachthepretzels · 21/03/2019 21:58

But theres a reason they say if its not passed then we give you even more time
They haven't said if it's not passed we give you more time. It;s the exact opposite, in fact. They've said you can have until mid may if you pass it or a 2 week extension if you don't. We have considerably less time if it doesn't pass. That is because of the EU elections. They are due on 23rd May - in order to take part in them we have to pass legislation for them by 11th April.

If the WA doesn't pass and TM refuses to allow these elections to go ahead (which she has already said) then we crash out on the 12th April. It is the point of no return.
She just has to be obstructive for the next three weeks and she gets the crash out which she seems to have decided she wants.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 21/03/2019 22:00

Thanks Red

Spent three hours this afternoon driving to my in-laws and have had to catch up on the thread surreptitiously whilst trying not to appear antisocial.

MIL and stepFIL are both 86YO and Remainers. They’ve asked me to help them sign the petition.

Had a very rare arguement with DH this morning as he feels my spending so much time reading these threads is not good for my mental health. Hmm Don’t think it’s the threads that are affecting my state of mind...

Big day at the hospital tomorrow seeing DH’s consultant and then marching on Saturday.

will be flag-waving on behalf of you, DP and dog again Smile

Andrew Adonis
‏*@Andrew*_Adonis

I hear that none of her ministers knew about Mrs May’s ‘coup’ broadcast from the bunker last night & they are mostly appalled. It was apparently Philip May’s idea. Whether leave or remain, most ministers think she can’t conduct any further negotiations beyond next week

twitter.com/Andrew_Adonis/status/1108832287259533312

Sounds like May's decisions are being dictated by her husband who has a financial interest in No Deal. Surely this is a massive conflict of interest.

Horehound · 21/03/2019 22:00

@cordeliaearhart you said My "most likely outcome" thinking is that TM will not even offer MV3 until approx 11th April.*
And I'm saying they have said if WA passes next week we get an extension to 7 May or whenever it is and if it doesn't pass then its extended to 12th April. So she can't put off MV3 to 11th April...

TalkinPaece · 21/03/2019 22:01

1.83 million signatures in less than two days ....
by Brexit day it may hit the magic number
PLEASE
get everybody you know to sign it
they need to be British (living anywhere in the world) or British resident
