Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

Well it's likely there won't be a human race in 500 years so yes, none of this will matter then.

{You don't have security and a bunker. What would you know.}
I've tried a bunker, it's shit (although very secure).
I now have windows and sometimes remember to shut and lock the front door.

Hardly!

yolofish · 21/03/2019 20:56

I still remember waking up that morning in 2016, saying sleepily to DH 'so are we still in?' and when he said no, my absolute shock and horror. And nothing has changed since, except, I suppose, got worse. I mean, even then, I had some kind of faith that even a stupid idea might be able to be well-executed. Obviously I am totally naive.

SisterMichael · 21/03/2019 20:57

But don’t a lot of people, outside of Westminster and people who follow this closely, think No Deal means we continue as before?

The ERG types know what it means and don’t care but I don’t think the general public does.

SisterMichael · 21/03/2019 20:58

(I’m not being patronising, I have just heard it mentioned several times on Brexit podcasts etc.)

1tisILeClerc · 21/03/2019 20:58

Pitch black (without lights on obviously) practically silent and cold.

dreichuplands · 21/03/2019 20:58

I am quite focused on the here and now thanks, food, medicine, a functioning economy those kind of minor issues hore. If we would like to capacity to deal with a large natural disaster these are all useful things to have access to.
Being forced to join a cult against ones wishes is highly irritating it turns out.

1tisILeClerc · 21/03/2019 21:01

{But don’t a lot of people, outside of Westminster and people who follow this closely, think No Deal means we continue as before? }

A poll several months back reckoned that about 25% thought this.
No deal actually means all of 'project fear' and more (or less in fact).

SisterMichael · 21/03/2019 21:01

1.5m on the petition.

woodpigeons · 21/03/2019 21:02

Is there really nothing that anyone either in or out of government can do ?
Can one psychopathic misfit destroy this country and the lives of the majority of the people who live in it ?
She’s very cunning. She’s got us where she wanted. It’s either her deal or crash out.
This is a serious question and I hope someone who knows a lot more than me can answer it.

SisterMichael · 21/03/2019 21:02

Interesting, thanks LeClerc.

OogieMcBoogie · 21/03/2019 21:02

I’ve just had my leaver DF on the phone berating me for telling the family to fill the cars up with petrol. Apparently I’m being ridiculous and scare-mongering and there’s no need because it’s all fine and petrol rationing only happens in countries where society has broken down. Hmm

GD12 · 21/03/2019 21:03

@nick_gutteridge

EU official says that when leaders asked May what she was going to do if her deal was voted down, she would only reply that she was following her 'Plan A' of getting it through. It was then they decided 'she didn't have a plan so they needed to come up with one for her'.

Horehound · 21/03/2019 21:03

dreichuplands yep..."irritating" I agree..

TalkinPaece · 21/03/2019 21:05

@horehound
If you think that Western civilisation and humanity as we know it will still exist in 500 years you need to read more climate science.

Britains politicians are navel gazing over where they shot themselves in the feet
as the world boils.

WaterQuarter · 21/03/2019 21:05

It'll all be fine. Will this matter in 500 years? Nah!

Fab news. I'm simply delighted for those who'll be alive in 2519.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 21:05

Gd12 was just about to post that nick Gutteridge quote. It's amazing!

Someone earlier on this thread posted about how afraid they are that their supply of insulin will run out as it all comes from the EU. They said they would be dead within a day if that happened. I imagine the fact that the humans living here 500 years hence won't still be mourning their loss is little comfort to that poster - and all the people around the country - who are genuinely afraid of what medication shortages will mean for them and their loved ones.

I find I am rather sanguine about the first outbreak of the black death - my disinterest must be such a great comfort to the 1 in 10 people who died at the time, and to the people who loved them.

Hmm
HazardGhost · 21/03/2019 21:07

I'm not being mean -I am-- but I'm not telling leavers to fill up their tanks, buy extra food or get extra meds.

Ok I've told some leavers who I love and who I think have been suckered in and groomed. But the MC alright jack types? No.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 21:08

Kids in 500 years time will be studying Henry VIII and his influence on Brexit. It'll matter.

MarmotMorning · 21/03/2019 21:08

Absolutely, the juxtaposition between the Brexit crap and then the floods in Africa is striking.
Only one of these issues will be relevant in 500 years

WaterQuarter · 21/03/2019 21:09

It was then they decided 'she didn't have a plan so they needed to come up with one for her'.

If I felt an iota of sympathy for the woman I'd be burning with humiliation for her. She's woefully out of her depth.
