Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

Channel 4 news is mooting the idea of a vote of no confidence if MVIII fails.

I've just seen Loathsome having a spat with Bercow in the house. No love lost there!

CordeliaEarhart · 21/03/2019 19:17

golandrina, is that so that we can watch the numbers go up without making the website crash? It currently says numbers not available - presumably cos the main petitions website has crashed again?

TatianaLarina · 21/03/2019 19:20

Channel 4 news is mooting the idea of a vote of no confidence if MVIII fails.

Slightly absurd. The NCV would need to be now if at all.

Holidayshopping · 21/03/2019 19:21

Haven’t we already had one?!

CordeliaEarhart · 21/03/2019 19:24

Haven’t we already had one?!

Yes, but HoC are allowed to vote twice (according to TM and JC) while the electorate aren't. Bastards.

I can't get State 'Television' on the internet here and I can't be bothered to fiddle with settings to get it.

Icantreachthepretzels · 21/03/2019 19:25

I just got a glance at the website comparing the two petitions (I made the mistake of refreshing - the server has crashed again.) Of all the people who have signed both petitions combined 77% have signed for revoke and 22% for no deal.
Then remember that one has been up for four months and one has been up for two days ...
It's as good an opinion poll than that silly one we all took part in back in 2016, but with a clearer idea of what's on offer and much fresher results.

I hope Leadsome lives to regret dismissing it so snittily.

DivisionBelles · 21/03/2019 19:26

Delurking to say that I'm so fucking incensed at the way TM has dealt with this that I've just fired off an angry email to both her and my local Leave MP. I cannot believe we are just over a week out and we still have no bloody plan.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 19:26

Nick Gutteridge @nick_gutteridge
Latest: Understand latest talks are indeed focussing on an initial extension ending on the 7th of May. But there's a Plan B fallback of dragging it out until the end of the year so long as the UK has said before April 11 that it will hold EU elections.

But the discussion amongst leaders is highly fluid, so this could easily change again before the final Council conclusions are agreed.

OP posts:
Random18 · 21/03/2019 19:27

So I have seen comments that it may be a short extension without conditions (not confirmed)

Surely this helps Parliament if it comes about and takes some control from May?

I am absolutely convinced the EU will see May for what she is.

A longer extension will then be possible if we accept EU elections by 11th april.

Or am I jut dreaming?

HepzibahHumbug · 21/03/2019 19:27

Yes Bigly. Let's hear it for the IT folks who keep getting the petition site back up (and maybe we could all stop watching it to leave it for signatories)
Why haven't we heard from EU? They were meant to make a statement at 6pm ffs.

MyNameIsArthur · 21/03/2019 19:28

@HepzibahHumbug another problem that just crossed my mind was that there would be no way of verifying if anyone was originally a leaver in 2016 so the petition would not be taken seriously. Never mind. Was just a thought

HepzibahHumbug · 21/03/2019 19:28

Sorry Red crossed post

Tanith · 21/03/2019 19:28

Amused to see Channel 4 subtitles “mishear” ‘No Deal Brexit’ as ‘Ordeal Brexit’ Smile

Several sources reporting similar. Immediate impact would be to reduce the pressure on next week in the UK. The EU can be good at kicking the can down the road as well, as anyone who ever followed their trade talks will know.

OP posts:
HepzibahHumbug · 21/03/2019 19:29

Yes it would be hijacked by remainers

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 19:30

Now this could mean that when MV3 falls next week, the deadline is extended, and indicative votes happen. But quite likely this Gov could choose instead to postpone MV3, not have indicative votes, and wait for following week.

But from what's been said it sounds like there is some disagreement amongst the 27 at this point.

Cos TM's 90 min speech pissed them off so much they're having to rethink. They were planning to offer an extension to 22nd May if the WA passes next week but that's up in the air now. They've got to get all 27 countries to agree something and I reckon they won't come out of the room til it is done.

boatyardblues · 21/03/2019 19:33

I’m catching up on the thread and many pages behind (posts around 10am today). Seeing how angry May’s speech made everyone, I’m glad I didn’t see it. I was (hiding from the unfolding horror) watching foreign telly on Netflix. DH came in to tell me May had just done a live speech to great fanfare, but it had amounted to the square root of fuck all and I was better off not watching it. I’m also kind of sorry I returned to these threads, because I’m now starting to feel far more worried than I did an hour ago.

Holidayshopping · 21/03/2019 19:35

Is May in the room with them all?

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 19:35

Bruno Waterfield @ brunobrussels
One source: Belgium and France want extension to 7 May (that's before EU relaunch summit in Sibiu on 9th)

If UK indicated willingness to hold EP elections by 11 April then extension, if WA remains unratified by 7 May, could then be nine months - "Flextensio"

So 7 May, whatever happens with WA. If UK notifies EU election by 11 April then can extend until 31 December FLEXTENSION is a thing

This means EU27 are going for e decision tonight to avoid a summit next week

Or not. Wrangling, several dates in play
The perils of allowing European leaders to draft texts

So may or may not be tonight.

Sounds to me like they dont want a summit on 28th if they can help it, and doing this allows the UK parliament to challenge May and gives them (just) enough time to stop no deal (in theory).

In other words the EU 27 are protecting UK parliamentary sovereignity - from Theresa May and her government.

Yes you read that right.

CordeliaEarhart · 21/03/2019 19:36

Nope. She gets no say in this. She has requested an extension, it is for the EU27 to decide whether to grant it and whether to attach conditions.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2019 19:36

SNAP ! Grin

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 19:37

They werent going to decide on the extension until Monday. So if we get anything tonight I think it's a good thing.
