Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

May is not in the room
Just as well

LonelyTiredandLow · 21/03/2019 19:37

From the Guardian

My colleagues Rowena Mason and Dan Sabbagh have also been looking at what Theresa May might do if her deal gets voted down. And, like the Financial Times (see 7.09pm), they have concluded that the evidence is pointing towards no deal.

Here is how their story starts.

Cabinet ministers believe there is now a real risk of a no-deal Brexit, with sources close to them describing the mood in government as depressing and No 10 as “run by lunatics”.

Senior members of the cabinet from both sides of the Brexit argument are understood to think the chances of the UK leaving without a deal have substantially increased after the prime minister set herself against a longer extension to article 50.

One aide to a cabinet minister said No 10 was in “full on bunker mode” and the prime minister’s speech from Downing Street shows “they have all taken leave of their senses”.

Another soft Brexit cabinet source described the mood as “depressing” and said of no deal: “The risk is now very real.”

Horehound · 21/03/2019 19:38

They just change the decisions to suit themselves at that particular point in time. Always changing their minds based Ion feelings. It's pathetic.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 19:39

Lonely I love how it's only just dawning on the cabinet what everyone here has been saying for weeks about May's strategy

Of course, the EP has not yet ratified the WA - they won't until the Uk does-

Jennifer Rankin@JenniferMerode

The European parliament could organise "an extraordinary session" to ratify Brexit deal after last session in April says Antonio Tajani.

The date will be choice of EU leaders, he adds.
...
Imagine the scenario: hundreds of MEPs called off campaign trail and back to Brussels/Strasbourg for extraordinary session in May to vote through Brexit deal.

< Christ, they would be so pissed with us, but I do hope it happens ... >

HepzibahHumbug · 21/03/2019 19:41

I so wouldn't blame the EU for giving up on us right now. Hope they don't ....

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2019 19:43

May has been channelling the bunker scene in "Downfall"

It's ridiculous if the Cabinet "adults" - Hammond, Rudd & maybe softer Brexiters - have only just noticed

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2019 19:44

In fairness, a few here have also been claiing May would accept no Deal
but they don't meet with her weekly

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 19:45

Faisal Islam@faisalislam
hearing the same as @Stone_SkyNews ...

EU27 moving towards unconditionally shifting the cliff edge to from next week to early May.

With decision to be made by April 11th on EP election participation the determining factor for longer extension.

Harry Cole @mrharrycole
Spectacularly unhelpful for May narrative to get the deal over the line next week

Anyone know what current figure for petition is please as i can't seem to get on the site?

HazardGhost · 21/03/2019 19:46

Me and DP earlier were trying to understand all that's happening, we concluded as red did above that the EU is trying to protect parliament and is being as helpful as possible given we are meant to be leaving and behaving awful.

What is May doing?! What is wrong with her? Is she just nasty? In desperate need of stable blood sugars thus cranky? A psychopath? Taken over by a demon spirit?

GD12 · 21/03/2019 19:46

FT reporting May made the decision to go for No deal late last night!

Horehound · 21/03/2019 19:49

And who did she say that to?

Yamayo · 21/03/2019 19:49

Apparently May was in the room. EU working on the premise her deal would be rejected (again) next week and asked what her plans would be if that were the case.
She refused to answer Angry.

They carried on talks without her after that.

SusanWalker · 21/03/2019 19:50

TM is apparently doing a statement later. Maybe the petition will get another boost.

The way she speaks is so patronising. I actually miss Tony in his shirt sleeves with his mug of tea and his cheesy grin. Even though that was also fake he pulled it off a lot better than TMs fake iron lady act.

TalkinPaece · 21/03/2019 19:50

I seriously think we are at over 50% chance of no deal crash out next week

Holidayshopping · 21/03/2019 19:50

She’s a bloody dictator.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 19:51

Henry Zeffman @hzeffman
If EU leaders are now considering an extension to May 7th (as reported by @adamfleming) I wonder if it's basically a gambit to give the UK time to find a new prime minister

Remember if May is no confidenced after 26th she'd still be PM on 11th April...

... Thus if that's the plan they are hoping for, somebody better get the memo and get their skates on...

OP posts:
Saucery · 21/03/2019 19:51

Is she maybe taking the fall for everything by pushing to an unreasonable, unworkable, unpopular and dangerous outcome so some process is triggered to stop this lunacy?

I’m probably being wildly optimistic.

keepforgettingmyusername · 21/03/2019 19:51

@GD12 if that is true she needs to GTFO. Fuck sake it's even making me consider going out to riot and I'm just a lazy old mum.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 21/03/2019 19:52

So the French are pushing for an extension to May 7th.
Theresa May sounds like she is pissing off all the other Europeans.

OMGithurts · 21/03/2019 19:52

If the above about the extensions is true, then this just highlights how desperately stupid an idea Leaving was in the first place. Far from taking away our sovereignty, the EU protects us from the worst excesses of a two party political system and being at the mercy of a party with an absolute majority.

HazardGhost · 21/03/2019 19:53

Sad not another May statement...

Oh channel5 news reported the petition earlier it's getting air time.

Horehound · 21/03/2019 19:53

They are having a break and haven't had their dinner yet..
Can't see a statement tonight

chocolateworshipper · 21/03/2019 19:56
