Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

It would be a bitter but just irony if the WA were to be passed, and may got to Brussels just to be told, "Sorry, we've changed our mind ..."

TalkinPaece · 21/03/2019 18:45

Arthur
At the current rate of signing, that petition will be getting into quite scary high numbers by the middle of next week .......

LonelyTiredandLow · 21/03/2019 18:45

"policy decisions" made me chuckle. Do they mean martial law here?

MyNameIsArthur · 21/03/2019 18:46

Fingers crossed TiP

LonelyTiredandLow · 21/03/2019 18:46

@Stripey I never had an email to confirm my TM email either and I used the link

Breaking: officials are drafting a new text at the #EUCO. I understand the Brexit A50 extension date of May 22 has been removed and replaced by “another configuration”.

mrslaughan · 21/03/2019 18:50

😱😱😱😱😱finally finished the last one and shamelessly placemarking on this one.....
Do you think I'll get this one read before there's another new one🤔
I doubt it.
But as usual thank you everyone- you are a place of sanity , in an insane situation

Sostenueto · 21/03/2019 18:50

Prepare to drive in the EU after Brexit
These government notices keep flooding in. Another batch of 10 just arrived.
{What all drivers from the UK may need to do to drive in the EU and EEA when the UK leaves the EU on 29 March 2019.

4:53pm, 21 March 2019: Clarification that if you are travelling in the EU and EEA with a UK registered caravan or trailer, you will need two Green Cards: one for the towing vehicle, and one for the caravan or trailer.}

Minimammoth · 21/03/2019 18:53

Trying to keep up, so place marking.

Decormad38 · 21/03/2019 18:53

Get signing the petition folks. Currently at 1.2 million. Let’s get it to 17 million!

SwedishEdith · 21/03/2019 18:59

Lloyd Russell-Moyle was the MP who had a real go at Loathsome yesterday during PMQs about her "exposing children" to LGBT in school. She did a "What, who me?" face.

Has a contantly updating counter

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 21/03/2019 19:01

I’ve signedbut haven’t received the email confirmation

HepzibahHumbug · 21/03/2019 19:02

MyName that's a good idea but it just won't gather the kind of momentum needed imo. Worth a try though ...Smile

TalkinPaece · 21/03/2019 19:03

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince
My emails took two hours to come through
there is a huge backlog of signatures .......

borntobequiet · 21/03/2019 19:07

I heard Leadsom and her smug “if it reaches” remark.
Nice challenge.

CordeliaEarhart · 21/03/2019 19:08

I feel a bit sorry for the HoC petitions IT people. The website keeps crashing and they have keep fixing it. And they're tweeting a lot more than normal, so that person has also been unexpectedly extra busy today too.

I'm sitting with BBC news channel on (again). It seems like the European Council can't agree on how to respond to TM. I reckon that they had pre-planned their draft conditional acceptance of the extension but then TM spoke for 90 mins, pissed everyone off, so now they are rethinking.

Finally, TM needs to face some consequences for whipping up a frenzy against MPs. We should simply not be in a state where MPs are advised not to go to work alone because they aren't safe. That's bloody outrageous, and I'd be interested to know when was the last time such advice was issued to MPs.

Holidayshopping · 21/03/2019 19:08

It’s very convenient the petition page keeps going down for maintenance.

Must stop the votes creeping up...

VanillaSugarr · 21/03/2019 19:09

Passports - if/when we leave the EU, you now need at least 6 months on your passport for it to be valid if you want to enter an EU country. And the EU only recognises the issue date (ie the passport is only valid within 10 years of its issue date) so you need a minimum of 7 months left on your passport to travel.

EU members can country hop even on the last date of their valid passport.

Does my explanation make sense?

prettybird · 21/03/2019 19:11

1TisILeClerc - I know it was on the state broadcaster's website but it wasn't on the TV news which is what would've given it greater reach. Funny how Sky can mention it but not the "main" Hmm news Hmm

Holidayshopping · 21/03/2019 19:13

Is there going to be an announcement from the EU tonight?

CordeliaEarhart · 21/03/2019 19:14

There was supposed to be an announcement over an hour ago but they are still discussing.

BiglyBadgers · 21/03/2019 19:15

It’s very convenient the petition page keeps going down for maintenance.

It's not convenient. It's a pain the arse for the IT folks working overtime because the servers are overloaded. I really don't think this is conspiracy, just systems that aren't used to this sort of traffic.

Whackaguacamole · 21/03/2019 19:17

Delurking to say thank you for these fantastic threads. I'm now marching on Saturday and its thanks to you all. Wondering if I've time to make a placard...

Apart from all the crap I was expecting from no deal today I heard regarding a legal case I'm involved in. This spans EU and EEC countries, while still up in the air I'm being told it probably won't proceed in a no deal situation which is pretty devastating personally. There must be thousands of situations like that with unintended consequences.

Finally, I've been with my brexiteer father today who acknowledges if he had to vote again he'd pick remain...
