Theresa May has asked for a short extension until 30th June, after Cabinet Brexiteers stopped her asking for a longer extension.

She has not stated the purpose of the extension beyond 'to pass her deal'. Which does not have a majority, because if it did May would be overturn the standing order Bercow invoked to block MVIII.

The EU have not reacted well to the request. Noises from France sound negative.

That doesn't mean we won't get one, but its not looking good. If we do it looks unlikely to go beyond May 23rd and EU elections.

We do not expect a response from the EU until Monday.

May has therefore in practice reinstated the possibility of no deal next Friday. Or at the end of any extension we do get.

She is due to give a speech on a podum at 6pm tonight.

Parliament has called an emergency debate on the extension to try and take control of debate. It, so far, looks like no more that the Brexit Secretary filibusting. Its going round and round in circles going no where.

Meanwhile rumours that Operation Yellowhammer will kick in on Monday are in the air. That's the first steps to martial law to manage no deal. This is very bad.

9 days to go.

Does anyone know how many signatures the most signed petition on the government website received? And what it was for, actually.

No idea. But the big petition immediately post referendum was over 4 million.

Over 150k signatures now

CoachBombay · 20/03/2019 21:50

Amoregentlemanlikemanor I have to agree with you.

I'm a swing voter have no particular allegiance to any one political party, and I think she's ok too.

I think hardened remained or brexiteers will hate her but they are in the minority compared to the general population.

Most people like me, your average run of the mill, non overly political person, on mid to low range wages, traditional working class backgrounds, were all fed up. All my colleagues, my family and friends they have had enough. MPs are just arguing and can't find a clear pathway, people round me are now saying "just leave, just end it, enough is enough"

I haven't got a particular problem with TM, she didn't cause the brexit mess, she was a remainer. She's got a shit job, is surrounded by shit people who want a power play on the PM spot, more knifes on her back than Ceaser, what is she supposed to do 🤷 . She can't resign, she knows full well some loon like Mogg or Johnson will end up at the helm of the brexit ship. Sometimes it's better the devil you know, as they say.

HazardGhost · 20/03/2019 21:50

chevvy someone else earlier came out in hives! The nation is allergic to TM?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 20/03/2019 21:51

It’s about 120 people signing every 3 seconds

HazardGhost · 20/03/2019 21:52

Just after the ref there was a petition that got loads...was it a million? People signed so fast confirmation emails couldn't keep up.

tobee · 20/03/2019 21:52

Where on this thread is the petition link, please? What time was it uploaded, please? Sorry

Curly, the 1922 committee are the men and women behind the 'Conservative and unionist 'party.
A rather shadowy bunch : drum up support and money. Bang their desks when the Tories win elections.
Described as ' the outriders'.
They are quite powerful people.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 20/03/2019 21:54

Hopefully the petition will get another boost by the 10 o’clock news

Here's a list of all open petitions. We've got a way to go.

BiglyBadgers · 20/03/2019 21:56

she was a remainer.

If you believe that you'll believe anything.

SusanWalker · 20/03/2019 21:57

I am recovering from being told what I think with wine. I barely ever drink. She has driven me to drink. Grin

Watched with DS. We spent the whole time saying no I don't and yes I do as appropriate. DS then threw up. I suggested it was the Theresa effect, but he pointed out that it couldn't be as he has a virus.

So she's still insisting on ignoring all of us then. I expect she'll be in Maidenhead on Saturday, avoiding the news and pretending that barely anyone's turned up for the march. Apparently the Cornish marchers are marching with a Cornish piper and a modified version of 'Trelawney' to sing.

Watching that speech I think she views her deal as synonymous with her as a person. When the deal is rejected, she feels personally rejected. But she sees it as the other people who have the issue, not her. That's why she won't give up on it, because she'd be giving up on herself.

I was going to say that whatever you have taken since last week seems to have perked you up. Some fine language earlier I noticed!

The80sweregreat · 20/03/2019 21:59

Signed the petition. Won't do any good but it's a start.

WaterQuarter · 20/03/2019 21:59

She famously doesn't have many friends in politics, which must be unusual. It's easy to see why.
