Theresa May has asked for a short extension until 30th June, after Cabinet Brexiteers stopped her asking for a longer extension.

She has not stated the purpose of the extension beyond 'to pass her deal'. Which does not have a majority, because if it did May would be overturn the standing order Bercow invoked to block MVIII.

The EU have not reacted well to the request. Noises from France sound negative.

That doesn't mean we won't get one, but its not looking good. If we do it looks unlikely to go beyond May 23rd and EU elections.

We do not expect a response from the EU until Monday.

May has therefore in practice reinstated the possibility of no deal next Friday. Or at the end of any extension we do get.

She is due to give a speech on a podum at 6pm tonight.

Parliament has called an emergency debate on the extension to try and take control of debate. It, so far, looks like no more that the Brexit Secretary filibusting. Its going round and round in circles going no where.

Meanwhile rumours that Operation Yellowhammer will kick in on Monday are in the air. That's the first steps to martial law to manage no deal. This is very bad.

9 days to go.

Oh I'm feeling much better thank you leclerc ;)

tobee · 20/03/2019 21:59

She was a remainer.

In the same way that Corbyn was Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2019 21:59

The 1922 Committee consist of all the backbench MPs in the Tory party,
i.e. all those who aren't ministers, who have no government job
(or when the Tories are in Opposition, all those without a Shadow post)

It is usually a delegation from the 1922 Committee who tell a leader when they have lost support among tory MPs and must step down.

But as we know, May never listens ...

Littlespaces · 20/03/2019 21:59

people round me are now saying "just leave, just end it, enough is enough"

If they want it to just end that is the worst thing to do. It will go for years negotiating for trade deals and dealing with the EU. Only way to make it go away is to Revoke.

TheElementsSong · 20/03/2019 22:00

people round me are now saying "just leave, just end it, enough is enough"

That's very tragic for them, because Brexit and its consequences is something that is never going to end.

SandAndSnow · 20/03/2019 22:00

Thanks. Let's hope people keep signing.

SusanWalker · 20/03/2019 22:00

I think the stop trump having a state visit petition reached thousands. That might have been one of the biggest. If 18 million people signed, where would that leave the will of the people?

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2019 22:02

If we had joined EFTA, then we would still be negotiating after that too !

Norway, Iceland etc are in perpetual negotiation with the EU, as new regs are always coming, either from the EU, or from the UN via the EU
If the regs are refused, then some associated EU benefits are no longer available

The80sweregreat · 20/03/2019 22:03

My MP is an ERG maniac.
I don't think he'll be spoken about fondly in Theresa's memoirs when she writes those in 2025.
This blame game isn't new though. She is probably upset she can't blame labour for it all!

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/03/2019 22:04

The petition to leave with no deal is at 369 thousand something. That's the one to beat. However - that one has been banging about for a while and this one only seems to have gone up in the past couple of days ( early today?) I'm optimistic we can do it.

It would be good if we could also take over the 'ban Isis fighters from returning' petition (well over 500 thousand) - get this petition to the top of the list.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/03/2019 22:04

I agree coach.

I want to stay in. But most people want to get on with it. She is pointing that out.

I am very sad about the whole thing because I want us to stay in the European Union but I think the best thing to do now is to accept the withdrawal deal

PickleSarnie · 20/03/2019 22:04

That petition is mesmerising. I'm refreshing every 5 seconds and the numbers are going up by about 150 each time.

PestyMachtubernahme · 20/03/2019 22:05

people round me are now saying "just leave, just end it, enough is enough"

But we are only on chapter two of this saga. Brexit will last my lifetime.

WaterQuarter · 20/03/2019 22:06

I wonder if she'll look back on this speech and think 'hmmmm, made a bit of an error there'.

Jsmith99 · 20/03/2019 22:06

Petition signed.

RedToothBrush · 20/03/2019 22:07

One of the Labour MPs who was considering voting for the WA.

Lisa Nandy @ Lisanandy
The Prime Minister’s statement was disgraceful. Pitting Parliament against the people in the current environment is dangerous and reckless. Yesterday her government attacked their civil servants. Now she’s attacking the MPs whose votes she needs. It will have cost her support

Liz Kendall @ leicesterliz
As I said earlier...trying to pit parliament against the people is dangerous. That May sought to do so again this evening is deeply irresponsible and more in keeping with authoritarianism than a Parliamentary democracy

Between me clicking on the petition map link and confirming my email address after signing the petition the total rose by 18k signatures. Less than 200 signatures in this constituency though Sad

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 20/03/2019 22:09

Very late PMK. Thank you Red

Just exhausted. Veering between feeling numb and utter despair.

tobee · 20/03/2019 22:10

Not surprised no one has been able to answer my earlier question as to what she hoped to gain from that speech? Talking to us lot?

If I went right up to ask her she probably wouldn't know either.
