Theresa May has asked for a short extension until 30th June, after Cabinet Brexiteers stopped her asking for a longer extension.

She has not stated the purpose of the extension beyond 'to pass her deal'. Which does not have a majority, because if it did May would be overturn the standing order Bercow invoked to block MVIII.

The EU have not reacted well to the request. Noises from France sound negative.

That doesn't mean we won't get one, but its not looking good. If we do it looks unlikely to go beyond May 23rd and EU elections.

We do not expect a response from the EU until Monday.

May has therefore in practice reinstated the possibility of no deal next Friday. Or at the end of any extension we do get.

She is due to give a speech on a podum at 6pm tonight.

Parliament has called an emergency debate on the extension to try and take control of debate. It, so far, looks like no more that the Brexit Secretary filibusting. Its going round and round in circles going no where.

Meanwhile rumours that Operation Yellowhammer will kick in on Monday are in the air. That's the first steps to martial law to manage no deal. This is very bad.

9 days to go.

Signed

Plonkysaurus · 20/03/2019 21:28

When she finished her speech and turned to walk away from the podium I was really hoping she'd stumble. It would've been a fitting end to that piece of shit speech.

Yamayo · 20/03/2019 21:29

I've been rewatching Game of Thrones in preparation for next month.
Was getting serious Cersei Lannister vibes from TM's speech.

Reckon she has wildfire stashed under the HoP, ready for Monday's speech? Grin

bojosmoralcompass · 20/03/2019 21:31

As said upthread, it is absolutely disgraceful and dangerous that she should malign parliament in this fashion.I can't believe what's being done to this country. She is an autocrat. This mess is all due to her. She has consistently put party before country and is a disgrace to the office of prime minister. Shame on her.

Littlespaces · 20/03/2019 21:32

Also she enables nutters to have a go at individual MP's. That is not right.

CordeliaEarhart · 20/03/2019 21:32

Lols, BBC Outside Source saying they can't actually find tweets supporting a Teresa May. Must be tough to be officially impartial in cases like these!

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2019 21:32

Already several Tory MPs & MEPs responding angrily & bluntly to May's blame game:

Nick Boles MP@NickBoles

Has anyone ever learned anything from a speech by Theresa May?

How come everyone is so surprised?

.....

Sam Gyimah MP@SamGyimah

Resorting to the 'blame game' as the PM is doing is a low blow.

Democracy loses when a PM who has set herself against the HoC then blames MPs for doing their job.

Distracts from Art 50 extension, all part of her strategy to run down the clock and rule out other options.

Toxic.

< Wow. I can't remember Tory MPs being so openly contemptuous of a leader before >

OutwithMyRemit · 20/03/2019 21:33

Signed the petition, it's gaining numbers fast, 50 or so every time I refresh the screen.

Horehound · 20/03/2019 21:33

The petition reached its target and is already with the government to respond. Is there a point to keep adding signatures or is It Just to show support?

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/03/2019 21:34

Ha - watching that petition, the numbers jump roughly about every 8 seconds. And every time they finish jumping it is around 100 more signatures. It is being signed at a rate of 100 people every 8 seconds - more than ten people per second!

It's the only good news there is at the moment. I'm watching it like it's a gripping t.v programme.

SeeYouLaterUserData · 20/03/2019 21:34

Yes. Definitely keep signing!!!

1tisILeClerc · 20/03/2019 21:34

Mind you, the EU haven't said she can have an extension yet. She has asked but Mr Tusk has said it needed to be a technical extension to finish the paperwork and not necessarily try to get the UK to decide what it wants (still).

Holidayshopping · 20/03/2019 21:35

So,the Torys can’t get rid of her with a no confidence vote as the last one failed and you can’t do it again for another year and she won’t resign.

How else do you get rid of dictators?

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/03/2019 21:35

Horehound definitely sign it. The more people who sign it the more attention they have to pay (ha!) 100 000 is just the threshold to get it debated, but obviously the more signatures the better.

SeeYouLaterUserData · 20/03/2019 21:35

It's like her speechwriter we thinking "what can I get her to say to tip a bazillion people over the edge into signing that petition " Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 20/03/2019 21:36

Yes, sign it. The last one they responded to basically said 100,000 vs the 17.4 million was bugger all and didn't show real support for revoke.

GCAcademic · 20/03/2019 21:36

Lols, BBC Outside Source saying they can't actually find tweets supporting a Teresa May.

So I suppose she has, in fact, united the country, in a fashion?

Holidayshopping · 20/03/2019 21:36

It’s gained about 30,000 votes in an hour!

The higher the number of votes, the bigger the point, I feel.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2019 21:37

I’m pretty sure I didn’t want her to lose that last vote of no confidence

Downhill since then

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2019 21:37

Any other politician whose speech had bombed this badly would be finished
but May is the ultimate Zombie whom nothing can remove

tom bradbyy@tombradby* (news at 10)

In 30 years of covering politics, that is the most bizarre statement by any leader I have ever heard.

1tisILeClerc · 20/03/2019 21:38

{Lols, BBC Outside Source saying they can't actually find tweets supporting a Teresa May. Must be tough to be officially impartial in cases like these!}
They probably have an 'alternative view' department, ready to spring into action for situations like that.
They have obituaries for all the rich and famous continually updated waiting for them to fall off their twigs.

TheMostBoringPersonEver · 20/03/2019 21:38

ERG guy Kyrscwski? Saying on sky people need to get behind the deal?? I thought ERG would never vote for it? He is saying vote or lose brexit, so maybe her scare tactics are working?

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2019 21:39

Jennifer Rankinn@JenniferMerode*

Senior EU diplomat says there will be "no formal decision" on extension at tomorrow's summit because not clear if MPs will back the deal.

< and because May sent her letter too late >

FedUpOfBrexit · 20/03/2019 21:39

When is the next key date then?
I thought the EU said we can't extend but May is saying we are.?

Triglesoffy · 20/03/2019 21:39

Signed. It’s over 125, 500 now.
