I honestly couldn't think of a better starter to the thread than simply just this tweet

Robert Peston @ peston
We’ve got an official opposition tearing itself apart over antisemitism, the founder of the EDL running rings around the judiciary and a government negotiating a Brexit plan that its own MPs and ministers tell me is dead. When will we pull ourselves together, as a nation?

But don't worry, your blue passport will get you an extra special long wait at passport control. And no deal could lead to continued freedom of movement anyway. Something for everyone in there.

I meant the last comment of the politics.co.uk article. Not frangdoodle's comment although I'm sure that's pithy as well.

With Etonians shunned in the modern Cabinet, where will the new talent come from?

MUMSNETTERS!
We couldn't fuck it up as much as Etonians. They have made it impossible with the bar they have set.

Cornish locals OUTRAGED after 'GERMAN' invasion on Porthmeor Beach in St Ives

One holidaymaker, Debra Palfreyman, who has revisited the site for the past 28 years, took a picture of the scene.

She posted it on the Facebook group The Real Love St Ives, saying: “Any ideas what this is on Porthmeor today?

“I think the immigration camp from Calais has moved here!”

Many people commenting on the post blamed the move on Germans, with Peter Durrant saying: “Germans - they're moved on from putting towels on the sunbeds.”

June Green said: “Looks like the Germans have bagged their space for tomorrow.”

And

But some people speculated the camp was the work of “second home owners from London”.

Debra from South Yorkshire told Cornwall Live: “We got to Porthmeor Beach yesterday at about 8.45am and that was the sight that greeted us.

“All set up and no one around. It actually increased by two more tents and wind-breaks after I had taken the picture.

What pretends to be journalism in 2018.

None of them are Cornish Locals (the biggest industry in cornwall of course being cornish pasty exports not tourism).

And I love how, when its not Foreigners to blame, its second home owners from London, with no shred of irony or evidence. Apart from some tents on the beach which obviously resemble a refugee camp.

I have read the Times article about the old Etonian PMs, and although he obviously can't bear to spell it out, the Post war old-Etonian PMs have not covered themselves in glory - Eden - Suez, Douglas-Home - nothing much to write home about in his short premiership as I recall, MacMillan - OK I think, and Cameron, with his ill thought out Referendum to his name, which has split the country. 2 out 4 dismal failures as PM.

A large chunk of it is a tirade against Comprehensives, and something of a promotional piece for grammars. His history doesn't go far back enough or he would have mentioned one of our more famous PMs, Lloyd George, whose sole education was in a Church of England 'National' or elementary school. Or he could mention how Major's grammar school education failed him, and his move into politics was what helped him get on in life.

It then goes on to sing the praises of Free schools as something which will fight against lack of aspiration. Hardly, they have pretty much been a failure, but that is a debate for an Education thread.

What we can be sure of is that money wasted on Brexit, is money which is not available for schooling, technical and vocational education, health care, housing........

Peregrina · 04/08/2018 10:37

From the Prospect article:

May has effectively staked her premiership. She will either have to agree to a full single market and customs union, or a Canada-style trade deal which splits the UK’s own single market with a regulatory border in the Irish Sea.

Which do you think May would go for? I would expect the Canada style deal, but for the thorny DUP problem.
I liked one of the commentators suggestions, that she withdrew A50 and then 'did a Cameron' and resigned the next day.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/08/2018 11:20

Either choice would cause fury in the party faithful and would likely topple her.
The party will not accept any concessions - "the EU must give the UK what it wants"

Hence why no deal is such a strong possibility:

the Coward's Brexit

Prioritising her party and her standing in that party, even if that means disaster for the country.
She would hope that the Brexit media spin - which would blame everyone except the Tory Party - would be believed by the 35% or whatever they need to be elected, or at least be in position to win the GE after that.

Thanks Red.

St Ives is always packed in the summer. That's why I never go there in June, July or August. You can barely walk down the streets and all of the beaches are always full. LOL at the woman on holiday from Yorkshire getting annoyed that there are other people also on holiday in St Ives in the summer.

I heard an interesting program on the radio about German tourism to cornwall. Apparently german tv adapted all the Rosamund Pilcher novels and filmed them all in Cornwall so german tourist companies offer holidays to come and see the locations.

Given that tourism is our main industry I say the more tourists the better, even if it is a bit annoying with the roads being so busy. But perhaps that's what leavers want, less tourists or only english tourists in our beaches.

There are tons of beaches in Cornwall, if she wants a quieter beach she only has to travel a few miles up the coast and she'll find one. The only reason the st Ives beaches are so packed is because nobody bothers going anywhere else.

It reminds me of that faux pas Theresa May made when campaigning in Wales in 2017. Remember?

She said: “We want to lead the world in preventing tourism...” That was her vision for the new U.K.

Sounds like we might be starting with St Ives.

Sarah Wollaston is a revelation really as it's easy to forget she started out as a Leaver. But then she's been trained to look at the evidence.

Just been down in Englandshire (and North Wales) for the last 2 days. Haven't been down the M6 in ages.

First thing dh and I noticed after we got into Cumbria was the fields and fields of sweet corn. We commented on this to the wine supplier we were seeing (down in Shropshire) (we were actually down for a funeral but combined it with a bit of business and also went to see my best friend in Wales) as his premises were surrounded by cornfields as well.

He explained that it was nothing to do with growing sweet corn for food: that farmers (like his uncle) got massive subsidies from the government for the amount of acreage that they put under sweet corn to then be used as a biomass fuel Shock. It doesn't even need to ripen or even be picked when it is is ripe. It can rot and still be used for biomass fuel. Hmm

I hope to goodness that when they are making the calculations as to how "self sufficient" the UK is for food and what shortfall we will somehow have to make up in the event of a "No Deal" scenario, they aren't including all these fields of corn! Shock
