I honestly couldn't think of a better starter to the thread than simply just this tweet

Robert Peston @ peston
We’ve got an official opposition tearing itself apart over antisemitism, the founder of the EDL running rings around the judiciary and a government negotiating a Brexit plan that its own MPs and ministers tell me is dead. When will we pull ourselves together, as a nation?

But don't worry, your blue passport will get you an extra special long wait at passport control. And no deal could lead to continued freedom of movement anyway. Something for everyone in there.

So the UK government may not enforce border controls post-Brexit... I think we should beware of calling this "free movement", since it won't, by itself, give EU nationals the right to remain in the UK and it certainly won't give UK citizens back their FOM in the EU.

Being able to enter the UK isn't much use if you then become a "non person". What rights will non-UK EU citizens have (if any) ? Will they be allowed to own property in their own right ? Because make no mistake that's what the JRMs of this world believe in.

I'd admit it could sound like scaremongering, if we have seen how far the UK government is already prepared to go in bucking international law.

Additionally, it's obvious that Leavers are quite happy to hang ex-pats out to dry, so there's nothing that would give them pause for thought.

RedToothBrush · 02/08/2018 11:48

Robert Peston @ peston
If @bankofengland raises interest rates today, will the governor cite the impact of Brexit he sees in reducing the non-inflationary sustainable growth rate of the economy? At this critical juncture for Brexit talks, @theresa_may will be praying he doesn't

Well that would be interesting....

Thanks Red

I also note the lie about 80% voted for parties which supported Brexit - this is where Labour has to step up.

I said that'd happen. I'd rather vote for the Black Country Independence Party next election than Labour. (Especially if it annoys people who dislike the name Grin)

SusanWalker · 02/08/2018 11:59

If I had shedloads of money (when, oh when will I win the lottery) I would take out a full page ad in all the national newspapers stating that when I voted for Labour at the last election it was because it was the best chance to get our Tory mp out and was in no way, shape of form a mandate for brexit.

Or perhaps a billboard ads around the country and anyone who agreed could sign the ad with a magic marker, like huge in your face petitions.

The Lib Dems Are Hoping To Reclaim The Centre Ground Of British Politics By Letting Non-Members Vote On Their Leader
The party is looking at plans to allow "registered supporters” to vote in a contest that would be opened up to political outsiders for the first time, BuzzFeed News understands

Well this is a spectacularly bad idea.

Trying desperately not to keep bashing my head against the nearest table

Our focus is making a success of Brexit and attempting to get the best deal possible.

We’ve already have the best possible deal - being part of the EU with our rebate and our veto.

Isn't this how we got Corbyn ?

They’ve all gone insane. The whole lot of them.

I’m worried that my overriding emotion over all of this debacle is becoming sadness rather than anger (still very angry but possibly sadness a stronger feeling with fearfulness a close second)

#BREAKING Bank of England hikes interest rates to 0.75%

Oh joy

Well if we weren't struggling to sell our house already, this is really going to improve things...

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 02/08/2018 12:23

The Bank of England lifted its benchmark interest rate to the highest since 2009, with policy makers putting on a surprisingly united front to say that further hikes will be needed to rein in inflation.

Fab. Just fab.

Thank you Red.

Singing, I don’t like the sound of your friend’s heart Sad My heart is so far from Brexit that I think my head would get there first.

DGRossetti · 02/08/2018 13:01

Bank of England hikes interest rates to 0.75%

Well that's some of the £500 per person sorted.

Hasenstein · 02/08/2018 13:03

I also got the same response to that petition. Mind you I think they just recycle the same to every petition.

The response seems to be suspiciously similar (aka identical) to the wording of the responses to the last few petitions I've signed. I fear the Independent's petition may meet the same shrug of indifference; they just don't care any more, as "will of the people" can be trundled out for years to come, regardless of whether it has changed in the meantime.

They will only start to notice when they realise that they will lose votes - as they did with Thatcher and the poll tax. Her own party saw her off. This wasn't enough however, because Labour wasn't ready so we got Major. Only when Labour produced people who looked as though they could win, first John Smith and then Blair, did the tide really turn.

HesterThrale · 02/08/2018 13:20

I agree Hasenstein but the thing about the 'will of the people' is that it may have been the will (of 51.9%) in 2016.

The 'people' change.
If the Govt rely on it for too long they'll likely find themselves unelectable.

borntobequiet · 02/08/2018 13:26

If the Lib Dem news is true, I assume the thinking is that a) LDs are the only pro-Remain party, b) Lots of people would vote for a pro-Remain party but have no confidence in the LDs at present, so c) give people a stake in the party by allowing them to vote for a leader (and it wouldn't be one the LDs themselves would vote for), and they would be more likely to vote LD. (I used to be a member but have been put off by their unconditional swallowing of the TRA agenda.)
Tom Brake is personable, intelligent and speaks well. He might appeal to non-LD voters, but I haven't a clue if he would stand for leader. Jo Swinson is a lightweight (in my opinion) (though not because she is female. She too is all on board with the trans thing).
However, I really don't think it would work. But desperate times, desperate measures, as they say. Vince must have pissed off lots of people.
