I honestly couldn't think of a better starter to the thread than simply just this tweet

Robert Peston @ peston
We’ve got an official opposition tearing itself apart over antisemitism, the founder of the EDL running rings around the judiciary and a government negotiating a Brexit plan that its own MPs and ministers tell me is dead. When will we pull ourselves together, as a nation?

But don't worry, your blue passport will get you an extra special long wait at passport control. And no deal could lead to continued freedom of movement anyway. Something for everyone in there.

Mind you many discount accountancy as 'boring', but really, it needn't be. I had a long spell working in taxes before I went into IT, which I found fascinating. (But perhaps I am a nerd.)

AdaHopper · 07/08/2018 22:57

Anti-biotics will be a problem without a deal. Otherwise why publish this:
researchbriefings.parliament.uk/ResearchBriefing/Summary/LLN-2018-0087

Peregrina · 07/08/2018 23:25

Such a typical Leaver stance - when challenged on what he said, Deadwood waffled and then tried to duck the question by refusing to answer. Well done to Victoria's researchers for finding his exact quote. We haven't seen much challenging of statements or waffle.

Cailleach1 · 07/08/2018 23:48

Super. Caught out on air denying the truth. Fortunately it was written down. Is that bare faced lying? These shower give off their act/ veneer of pretend respectability. When they are just dodgy, two faced lying gits. Crooks in a suit. Oh, in my very personal opinion, that is.

Tanith · 08/08/2018 00:14

It’s one of the things I find so shocking. We’re used to politicians who prevaricate or bend the truth to its furthest stress point, but actual bare-faced lying has always been something to be avoided - until now.

There’s an arrogance about it, a swagger that couldn’t care less if it’s caught out because it really makes no difference in the end.

RedToothBrush · 08/08/2018 00:38

If you are wondering why I haven't commented on Tories, Boris and Islamophobic, its cos it pointless and nothing new and we know May will never do anything about it, and talking about it is what Steve Bannon wants. We had Zac Goldsmith's London Mayor election say it all.

I just think this sums things up

Nick Cohen @ nickcohen4
If you hate Muslims, vote Tory. if you hate Jews, vote Labour. What a fucking country

Sad

The thing that got me about the Boris hoohah , is that this wasn't some flippant off the cuff remark, this was written down in an article, that he will have checked a couple of times and other people will have checked it too before it going to print.

But you are right Red , Knob says more knobbish things, bit of a non story really.

frumpety · 08/08/2018 06:25

Timeline it with the bookshop attack though and it makes you wonder about ulterior motives, although the rational part of my brain still thinks Knob says knobbish things to get attention again.

Tanith · 08/08/2018 06:37

Vote UKIP if you hate everyone.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/08/2018 06:58

Nick Cohen's tweet (red above) is horridly apt

Mistigri · 08/08/2018 07:10

Plenty of antisemitism in the Tory party, just a different sort (pro Israel but anti Jew, like many Trumpian politicians in the US... and like the FN in France).

It's not so long ago that a Tory MP got his hand slapped, but didn't get kicked out of the party, for going to a nazi dress up party. Imagine if a Labour MP did that.

frumpety · 08/08/2018 07:23

Boris will get away with it because people like my Mother believe he is right and should be allowed to say it.

Mistigri · 08/08/2018 07:25

You really don't. You need to be adequate at maths, and most of that is for passing the exams. I think most of the day to day maths cod be handled by your average twelve year old

I work in strategic planning and we do lots of computer modelling including stuff like cost curves, which is basically just accountancy. 95% of what we do is, in mathematical terms, primary school arithmetic, and most of what isn't is handled by excel functions anyway.

Prettybird, there was a hoo-haa here in France after the baccalauréat maths paper this year, because one or two of the questions actually required candidates to think...

ClashCityRocker · 08/08/2018 07:26

It does seem that Labour are held to a higher standard than the tories.

peregrina I work in tax now and is really quite interesting. I have a specialism in indirect tax and its quite worrisome some of the things that hmrc have tried to do that the ECJ have very sensibly overturned....

ClashCityRocker · 08/08/2018 07:29

Auditing is boring as shit at junior level though, I'll give them that...

Unfortunately, much like some of Trumps musings, BorisJ is articulating what many in this country think.
I used to hope politicians would try and raise the standard of debate, it seems now its all about sinking to the lowest common denominator.

borntobequiet · 08/08/2018 08:12

Aaah - the lowest common denominator - yet another term that baffles and confuses so many of my learners...god knows how they interpret it if used in conversation...

MyBrexitUnicornDied · 08/08/2018 08:16

Boris will get away with it because people like my Mother believe he is right and should be allowed to say it

According to dh Boris is just saying what lots of people think. Sad

NoCryingInEngineering · 08/08/2018 08:19

born that's one that (like anatomy) my DM says is far easier if you learned Latin

Mrs8 I'd say the same about Shakespeare and Jane Austen really. But there's supposed to be more to education than just the bare minimum to function in society.
