Tomorrow is the Queen’s Speech. In honour of that the start of this thread is written in its honour:

….
Immigration is bad. Except for that good immigration.
….
….
Brexit means Brexit
….
Pilot scheme.
....
….
….
Money for –the DUP-- NI
….
….
Brexit means Brexit
….
The Internet is Bad. Newspapers are good.
….
Brexit means Brexit.
….
….
….
Britain wave your flag.
….
….
….

(The Queen’s turns over the page to read the back of the A4 sheet, only to find it blank)

No crown Shock A p/a snipe at May?

I heard an anecdote (probably Readers Digest Smile) that shortly after Mrs. Thatcher came to power, there was a request from No. 10 to the palace, asking if they could advise what colours the Queen would be wearing to an event she was to attend with Mrs. Thatcher, so that Mrs Thatcher could dress accordingly.

Apparently the reply from the palace was just "Her Majesty does not notice what other people are wearing ..." or something to that effect.

Mrsmartell08 · 21/06/2017 12:13

Sooo...
Not much in it.
More what's been left out isn't it?

Gumpendorf · 21/06/2017 12:16

Great summary, Red. I don't need to know more. Let's press regardless then... onward to that cliff edge.

EmilyAlice · 21/06/2017 12:18

I don't know when the decision about dress was taken, but I wouldn't want to wear ermine and a crown in a heatwave.

Peregrina · 21/06/2017 12:22

To be fair, I think the Queen's attire was decided a couple of months ago.

The crown is heavy, and I imagine that as the Queen gets older, she doesn't want to bother with it. Who knows, she might also think that a lot of pomp and ceremony at a time of austerity and after the events of the past couple of months, is not appropriate.

DividedKingdom · 21/06/2017 12:24

From memory, it went something like: "The EU needs the UK car industry more than the UK car industry needs the EU".

Indeed. And since I was enjoying some of our chief negotiator DD's tweeting history this morning, we can enjoy his related musings of just over a year ago:

David Davis‏**@DavidDavisMP** 26 May 2016
The first calling point of the UK's negotiator immediately after #Brexit will not be Brussels, it will be Berlin, to strike a deal

David Davis**@DavidDavisMP** 26 May 2016
(1/3) Post #Brexit a UK-German deal would include free access for their cars and industrial goods, in exchange for a deal on everything else

On that same day he shared around 50 tweets, the vast majority of which were either unsubstantiated or in direct contradiction with established stats and expert opinion.

It actually makes me feel sick to read it again Sad

But one smile raised a week later, as he makes a possibly prophetic reference to the forthcoming, current demise of the Tories and their exposure as incompetent charlatans on the world stage:

David Davis‏**@DavidDavisMP** 7 Jun 2016
(2/2) The PM says “if you’re going to build a house you ask an expert”. But you wouldn’t ask experts whose house had fallen down.

PattyPenguin · 21/06/2017 12:38

The BBC's live news feed has a rundown of the contents of the Queen's Speech, including this:
"The Queen's Speech unveiled an Immigration Bill, which ends the free movement of EU nationals into the UK, while still allowing the country to attract "the brightest and the best".

The bill also states that EU nationals and their families will be "subject to relevant UK law"."

I don't wish to be alarmist, but does the "subject to relevant UK law" mean the Home Office will be sticking to the health insurance requirement for residency?

RedToothBrush · 21/06/2017 12:39

Peregina, yes but a BLUE hat with YELLOW flowers?!!!
The Queen isn't daft. Symbolism is part of art history and religion which I'm fairly sure the Queen is quite well reversed in. There are lots of people who will be shit hot on 'sensitivities' around the Queen too.

I noticed the other day that the Queen wore the exact same shade of blue visiting Grenfell as May wore for her 'victory speech'. It jumped out at me. And now we have that hat? At best I assume the Queen is pissed at May and almost trying to assert the point that SHE not May is the head of the country. (Rather than a pro-EU message).

Ok, so a question. DUP would under no circumstances vote with Corbyn. But would they vote for hard Brexit? I don't think so.

ElenaGreco123 · 21/06/2017 12:51

Thanks for pointing out the Queen's hat.

DividedKingdom · 21/06/2017 12:52

...my first thought was her message could be "Supporting to Remain in the EU does not undermine sovereignty, and most definitely does not make one an enemy of the people".

Said in a v posh voice of course.

Call me an optimist, but that colour/pattern combo takes a bit of deliberate effort IMHO. Whatever the message, I do believe there was one intended.

squoosh · 21/06/2017 12:58

The royals always choose their clothes carefully and always adapt their clothes to the occasion, green on St Patrick’s Day, maple leaf brooches when in Canada…………..blue hats with yellow flowers when trolling May about the EU. The Queen couldn’t have picked a more EU outfit if she’d tried.

SapphireStrange · 21/06/2017 13:05

Elena, I think they could abstain to spare their blushes. Unfortunately I think that would still allow the Queen's Speech to pass.

ElenaGreco123 · 21/06/2017 13:06

True Sapphire. Thanks.

Something for the Sun, Express and Mail to get worked up about. The row behind with Tim Farron didn't seem to bow either. And JC winked too!

Tbh, I'm not sure why the Guardian needed to point this out.

Blackadder clearly appreciated by lots this morning!

whatwouldrondo · 21/06/2017 13:32

Well whether she intended it or not, and remember she is close to some younger members of her family, some who studied Art History too, it has certainly been noticed in MSM and SM 🙂 If she can catch the mood of the country and appear to parachute into the Olympic Stadium then I do not think it unlikely she would do the same again. Whether or not she is for Brexit if she was supportive of Mays approach then she would have been advised against anything that would appear to be symbolically pro EU.......

whatwouldrondo · 21/06/2017 13:39

Leadsom on Radio 4 avoiding the question, "Would you stand for Leader again" that after saying nobody can say that the DUP talks are in trouble even when the DUP are saying that or will cause problems in terms of the funding formula for the regions and we have to wait for details of the deal. Oh dear god, NO

Place marking on another fast moving thread...

Topseyt · 21/06/2017 13:55

That speech won't take long to deliver. The Queen needn't worry about missing too much of Ascot.
