Money for –the DUP-- NI

Re: the Queen/Brexit ...

It's hard not to think of the Queen as European, given that she's related to almost every royal house - extant and defunct - in Europe. She even married "a European" FGS.

Henning Wehn commented, when it was revealed that Prince William supported Aston Villa that really, William should support his local team. Hanover Grin.

Just to add the Blackadder revival:

[Blackadder is interrogating Captain Darling who is suspected of being a German spy]

Captain Darling: I'm as British as Queen Victoria!
Captain Blackadder: So your father's German, you're half German, and you married a German!

citroenpresse · 21/06/2017 13:57

no mention of Trump Phew.

If it hadn't been rumoured that ERII tended to leave rather than remain (though wasn't the source for that Gove?) would say that was definitely an EU flag hat. Haven't read the Guardian fashion 'We LOVE her in yellow" desk yet.

squoosh · 21/06/2017 14:06

Maybe the Queen wore lederhosen under her EU ensemble as an extra nod to her German roots.

(it's probably treasonous to even think about Liz's undergarments)

BlueEyeshadow · 21/06/2017 14:19

Stuart Heritage on Twitter:
"A Daily Mail commenter just called the Queen a "Lefty liberal luvvie traitor!!!" for wearing that EU hat, so today has peaked"

PinkPeppers · 21/06/2017 14:21

Patty either this is a way to say something wo saying anything, aka we are going to control our borders but still have the ones we want coming in and put some regulations in place but we dont know what yet (so it could be as lax as you want iyswim).

Or it could mean what you are saying or what I have suspected will happen, aka EU citizens will have to confirm to 'normal' immigration rules (Not aware that these include anything about health insurrance, unless you want to become an UK citizen??)

PinkPeppers · 21/06/2017 14:24

I love the hat though.

Is the Queen trying to say, in a very british PA way, that she is actually a remainer? I was convinced she was keener on the Leave side

PattyPenguin · 21/06/2017 14:25

(Not aware that these include anything about health insurrance, unless you want to become an UK citizen??)

And if you want to apply for permanent residence.

DividedKingdom · 21/06/2017 14:34

Patty I could be wrong, but interpreted it as a reference to inclusion in EU original proposals regarding "their" citizens that they would be subject to exact same legal protection as today I.e. same legal system inc ECJ as prior to Brexit, irrespective of what UK chooses for its own citizens.

Which seemed a bit of a tall order to me at the time. I could have misunderstood or just me plain wrong. Why oh why can't these statements be made with clarity...there has been enough confusion and stress for these people already.

LurkingHusband · 21/06/2017 14:38

I can't see the EU not requiring the ECJ to have the final say on UK resident EU citizens, whatever the Barking Brexit Brigade want.

Meanwhile, John Cleese appears to have the inside track on Brexit negotiations. He's just posted a picture of the UKs Brexit team

Still loving the hat....

Can just imagine her seething over the sovereignty bullshit, UK in disarray about to jump off a cliff, and fuming that she's totally gagged by protocol.....calls a staff meeting and says "My people must know I do not support Brexit....Make It So." Everyone freaks out then a lady-in-waiting tentatively whispers... "You know that big crown they normally make you put on ma'am....well I've got a crazy idea...." Grin

squoosh · 21/06/2017 14:49

Can just imagine her seething over the sovereignty bullshit, UK in disarray about to jump off a cliff, and fuming that she's totally gagged by protocol

For sure. She can't say anything in public about her feelings on the matter but she can sure as hell wear her heart on her sleeve. And her head.

PattyPenguin · 21/06/2017 14:50

So now I've had a chance to peruse the full text of the QS, and this is all there is on immigration:

"A bill will be introduced to repeal the European Communities Act and provide certainty for individuals and businesses. This will be complemented by legislation to ensure that the United Kingdom makes a success of Brexit, establishing new national policies on immigration, international sanctions, nuclear safeguards, agriculture, and fisheries."

So where did the Beeb get its wording?

PattyPenguin · 21/06/2017 14:57

Found it...

From GOV.UK, Policy Paper "Queen’s Speech 2017: what it means for you"

"Immigration Bill

With the repeal of the European Communities Act, it will be necessary to establish new powers concerning the immigration status of EEA nationals. The Bill will allow the government to control the number of people coming here from Europe while still allowing us to attract the brightest and the best. The Bill will:
•allow for the repeal of EU law on immigration, primarily free movement, that will otherwise be saved and converted into UK law by the Repeal Bill
•make the migration of EU nationals and their family members subject to relevant UK law once the UK has left the EU"

There are also Background Notes to the QS on GOV.UK www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/620838/Queens_speech_2017_background_notes.pdf

BigChocFrenzy · 21/06/2017 14:59

The Beeb may have been given an earlier draft by mistake - I suspect there were several versions, right up to the last moment
Or they are telling political porkies < hopefully not >
Or they are confused as the rest of us < most likely >

LurkingHusband · 21/06/2017 15:01

So "Brexit" is now official parlance ? Wasn't it lexis non grata a few months ago ?

I also note the rather tautologous "national". Surely all policies are "national" ? Is this an attempt to legitimise steamrollering through the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish parts of Brexit ?

As a tribute to the late, much missed Led Zeppelin fan Karen Carpenter:

We've only just begun ...

ClashCityRocker · 21/06/2017 15:01

So basically she's said..... Not a lot, really.

Nothing that she can't wiggle out of at a later date.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/06/2017 15:01

"relevant UK law" will be whatever law is decided on and passed
That would hopefully be after agreement with Barnier < don't hold your breath >
So could be same current law as for non-EU, or it could be something new

PattyPenguin · 21/06/2017 15:02

Forgot link to Policy Paper "Queen’s Speech 2017: what it means for you"
www.gov.uk/government/publications/queens-speech-2017-what-it-means-for-you/queens-speech-2017-what-it-means-for-you

BigChocFrenzy · 21/06/2017 15:03

I wonder if a few Tory rebels - Ken Clarke and a handful of supporters - might vote against a law retrospectively removing rights of E27 expats

BigChocFrenzy · 21/06/2017 15:05

Also, that speech isn't clear - probably deliberately - whether "migration" refers just to future EU immigrants, or to those resident for 5 years or more.

DividedKingdom · 21/06/2017 15:09

OK, I think I remember what this is about (usual disclaimers again, though!).

Currently non-UK-EU citizens can bring their non-EU spouse to live in EU (with certain conditions, usual self-sufficiency rules and criminality clearances of course, but fairly easy). This has created a significant discrepancy in treatment of non-EU spouses of non-UK-EU citizens living in UK, versus non-EU spouses of UK-EU citizens living in the UK because the latter UK-citizens are subject (already!) to UK laws regarding non-EU spouse visas which override those applicable to non-UK-EU citizens who wish to bring their non-EU spouse to UK (and are far more restrictive and indeed punitive).

The EU proposal wants status quo for non-UK-EU citizens to remain for their lifetime, rather than those rights being downgraded to those currently of UK-EU citizens relating to their spouse visa entitlements.

I hope that makes sense. I did try quite hard to avoid pronouns there and it was tough!

Palermonese · 21/06/2017 15:12

From GOV.UK, Policy Paper "Queen’s Speech 2017: what it means for you"

My DF came to the UK, married to my (British) DM in 1963 (it should be obvious where from Smile). Because at the time it was not possible to hold dual citizenship he did not become a UK citizen as he wanted his children (i.e me) to enjoy our heritage.

Sadly my DM passed earlier this year, and currently my DF is worrying himself sick that he will be thrown out and not allowed to be buried next to her. And when 80+ year old men get worries in their head, it's impossible to dislodge them. Sad Sad

For various reasons, I haven't been able to tell that story IRL, but I am sure it's not an isolated incident.

So for some people who cannot understand why some people cannot "get over it", maybe that helps makes some sense of it.

Tanith · 21/06/2017 15:14

"Is the Queen trying to say, in a very british PA way, that she is actually a remainer? I was convinced she was keener on the Leave side"

That's because they lied and implied that she was. As I recall, the Palace were furious - perhaps this is why.

I loved Dennis Skinner's traditional comment to Black Rod's invitation, too:
"Get your skates on! First race is half past 2!"

Did Karen Carpenter like Led Zeppelin? Bonham is a good drummer too though. Janet Jackson liked them too apparently. Good taste.

Nice hat, Brenda.

Great QS transcription red

Barnier too mentioned all 48% of us LH who have been shafted, he's including us in his negotiations apparently.

Hope they organise mass air lifts.

LurkingHusband · 21/06/2017 15:22

Did Karen Carpenter like Led Zeppelin? Bonham is a good drummer too though

Sadly was. A complete waste of a great talent to that most evil of drugs: alcohol. If only he's smoked a spliff.

I don't know if KC liked LZ as such, but I've read more than once over the years she was a fan of Bonham, and often felt she was a better drummer than singer.

Hope they organise mass air lifts.

Given their Tory politics, maybe Lloyd-Webber and Elton are working on it even as we speak. I can see it now: "Miss London", as the last Remainer is airlifted from the EU embassy in Farage Square.
