Westministenders: Theresa's Common People

RedToothBrush · 18/05/2017 13:50

She came from Oxfordshire she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied geography at Saint Hugh's College
That's where politics
Caught her eye

She told them that her husband was loaded
The press barons said "In that case have a rum and coca-cola"
She said "Fine"
And in thirty seconds time she said

I want to look like common people
I want to do whatever common people do
I want to eat like common people
I want to sleep like common people
Like you

Well what else could Fiona and Nick do
They said "We'll see what we can do"

They took her to a supermarket
I don't know why
But they had to start it somewhere
So it started there
They said pretend you've got no money
She just laughed and said
"Oh you're so funny"
They smiled "Yeah”
Well we can't see anyone else smiling in here

Are you sure you want to live like common people
You want to see whatever common people see
You want to eat like common people
You want to sleep like common people
Like me

But she didn't understand
She just smiled and held Trump’s hand

Order that benefits get the chop
Tell them all to get a job
Promise to bring back the grammar school
Pretend you don’t think them a fool
But still you'll never get it right
'Cause when you're laid in bed at night
Watching the news talking about building the wall
All have to do is call your mates to fake it all

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do whatever common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
Whilst you blame it all on the EU
Because that’s all you can do

Sing along with the common people
Sing along and it might just get Brexit through
Laugh along with the common people
Laugh about leaving the EU

It’s the most stupid thing that you will do
Because you think that it is cool
You’ll call them a ‘lying foreigner’
But don’t say we didn’t warn you
You’ll regret saying we are better off out
'Cause everybody hates a benefits tourist

It doesn’t matter if you can’t do the math
With all those pockets that you grease
You’ll win the vote in Bath

You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And wish they were all white
So you tell ‘The Big Lie’

Get THE flat above THE shop
Cut your hair and get THE job
Trick some mugs and hire some fool
Pretend you are not really cruel
But still you'll never get it right
Instead you're plotting late at night
About which ‘cockroach’ will take the fall
All have to do is call your mates to fake it all
Yeah

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do what common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
As we plan to leave the EU
Because there's nothing else left to do

But ‘moan’ about how we don’t want to leave the EU.

The IHT would be a certainty, whereas they could gamble on not needing care, or not for long.

imo, those grumbling - that it isn't worth working if they end up paying for care - keep forgetting that enables them to choose a better care home, in particular to avoid the worst ones.

Other elderly people without money have no choice - they end up wherever the local authority found the cheapest available place.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/05/2017 19:15

Those grumbling baby boomers obtained a once in a century windfall that the young won't get.
However, they feel entitled to keep all that windfall, entitled to have their care paid by those younger and poorer.

I do like the colours on that one. Smile Looks nice.

However, they feel entitled to keep all that windfall
Right to buy, wasn't exactly right to buy then?
I think a few pennies are dropping, not quite enough, but things change.

The Tory #DementiaTax manifesto pledge is emerging as a major issue #Twickenham doorsteps. Solid Tory voters are waivering because of it

OP posts:
I17neednumbers · 20/05/2017 20:09

That is interesting Redtooth. I think many Twickenham con voters, given property prices there, might lose more 'bequeathable wealth' from the reduction in inheritance tax thresholds - that VC's party also proposes!

It depends on your property value, future care costs etc. But as another pp said, the iht increase is guaranteed while you can hope you won't need very much care.

Millions of postal votes will hit doormats early next week, & most are returned within 48 hours, so parties need big impact this weekend

Death tax, was an unusual choice to lead on then.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/05/2017 20:40

Orb Poll

25% of LAB 2015 voters want the party to split if Corbyn remains after the GE

http://www.orb-international.com/perch/resources/additional-questions-19th-may-1.pdff_

Also, VI with change from 4 weeks ago
< I wonder what effect #DementiaTax will have >

http://www.orb-international.com/perch/resources/voting-intention-19-05-2017-1.pdf

CON 46% (nc)
LAB 34% (+3)
LDEM 7% (-1)
UKIP 7% (+1).

Remain voters:
. 30% Con (+4)
. 49 % LAB
. 12% LDem (-7)
. 0% UKIP

< Many Remain voters haven't given up, but seem to have given up on the LDems. They are voting heavily LAB. Is it Farron, or just going for a more powerful party ? >

Leave voters:
60% CON
20% LAB
3% LDEM
12% UKIP

BigChocFrenzy · 20/05/2017 20:44

Opinium also out today
CON 46% (-1)
LAB 33% (+1)
LDEM 8% (nc)
UKIP 5% (nc)

So, same 13% Tory lead, same tendency to narrowing
which may increase if Dementia Tax causes a switch ..... but to where ??

BigChocFrenzy · 20/05/2017 20:45

I mean the narrowing tendency may increase, i.e. Tory lead will narrow Blush < that wasn't very clear ! >

Arrhhhh that Tory Candidate Vetting Process. This is what happens if you rush it....

www.buzzfeed.com/patrickstrudwick/this-tory-candidate-has-been-linked-to-a-gay-cure-church?utm_term=.ejlRJe6b3#.ot49bza2e
Revealed: This Tory Candidate Had Links To A "Gay Cure" Church
"They thought you had a demon in you," said a gay former member of the church. But parliamentary hopeful Kristy Adams refused to answer questions from BuzzFeed News when approached about her involvement in the church.

A Conservative candidate contesting one of the most tightly fought seats in the general election – in an area known for its large gay population – was a prominent member of a church accused of attempting to "cure" LGBT people by casting out their "demons", BuzzFeed News can reveal.

Kristy Adams, a devout Christian hotly tipped to win Hove and Portslade from Labour, attended the evangelical King's Arms Church in Bedfordshire for several years. During this time the church was exposed by The Observer newspaper for reportedly attempting to "heal" gay and transgender people in quasi-exorcisms

Cheers, BigChoc May's done wonders for labour polling anyway, with JC Shock, I wonder how well she would have done for an even better labour leader. Long term, this may be important.

Caring sharing people party?
We did our best, between SIL, BIL me and DH to nurse my dying MIL last year. And as she repeated on a daily basis (she was a life long tory voter in England) if it had not been for the generosity, humanity and all round decency of the so called immigrant carers who helped through the last months, things would have been much tougher.
I doubt she would have voted for the present incarnation of the tory party.

TatianaLarina · 20/05/2017 21:06

Gay cures, MPs telling teenagers to fuck off, the Tories are spoiling us with the quality of candidates.

HesterThrale · 20/05/2017 21:09

Yes woman we should march on 10th June if there's a Tory landslide.

There must be considerable numbers of people very unhappy: disabled people, Remainers, health and education workers, lots of folk in Scotland, Wales and NI, pensioners, low waged workers, students and many young people, carers, environmentalists, UK residents in the EU, NHS users, people who want to stay in the single market, many Londoners and residents of other cities, and employers who rely on EU workers.

So who's left? (Obviously many voters do like the manifesto proposals, but maybe a lot are unaware of the details.)

But TM is ignoring a huge portion of the populace. This WILL blow up in her face.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/05/2017 21:10

That's heartwarming how your family pulled together to nurse your MIL, woman
I think many who in the last voted Tory, or at least considered them as an option, really resent what they have turned into, post-1980

< yes, some of us are old enough to remember a quite human Tory party pre-Thatcher.
Mind you, at least she was a highly competent and knowledgeable politician, who wasn't too frit to face her opponents head-on >

Opinium net approval ratings:
(changes from 10 May)

May +17 (+2)
Corbyn -18 (+10)
Farron -21 (nc)

Corbyn seems pretty effective on the stump (maybe just in contrast to Frit Treeza !)
He's at least energizing the Labour core and those few further left, who don't usually vote.

Farron now has a slightly worse rating than Corbyn Hmm
Is that because voters dislike him / LDEM policies / both ?
Or just because Corbyn's is getting much more exposure and he / Labour seems the only feasible hope of cutting the Tory landslide ?

"Margaret Thatcher was know as the 'milk snatcher'. Theresa May will go down as the lunch snatcher."

RedToothBrush · 20/05/2017 21:32

if Dementia Tax causes a switch ..... but to where

If what I've been hearing is right, its most likely to not be a switch at all. Its more likely to be a turnout issue.

Which could really throw things in certain constituencies.

It SHOULD show up in the polls and look like a switch but its probably not despite what the press and social media might tell you (if it does happen).

This is because pollster do their estimations because on likeness to vote and then weight this against intention.

Important to know and understand in election strategy.

I suspect that any pick up of votes by other parties will depend on location too. It might well hit remain Tories harder than leave Tories. Why? Because its 'easier' to switch from being a remain Tory to the LDs than it perhaps is to switch to Labour. And in many case there is no UKIP candidate in Leave Areas as an alternative.

Also worth pointing out that the biggest fear the Conservative Party strategists are already concerned about is that people convinced of a Tory Landslide are not going to turn out. This is why they are ramping up the idea of a Corbyn victory. To try and ensure turnout.

Depending on what happens in the next couple of weeks in the polls, this could get very weird in what strategists do.

And as its being pointed out, postal ballots are going out at the moment and most people do make a decision and return them within 48 hours. (So watch out for potential stories about the number of postal ballot returns).

With gay cure candidates and dementia taxes there is potential for really weird things to happen starting to appear.

May’s plan to end free school lunches ‘to hit 900,000 struggling families Move could undermine key Tory target of helping families that are ‘just about managing’, as concerns grow over social care pledge

www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/may/20/theresa-may-school-meals-plan-hits-900000-families

900 000 families who weren't all labour voters, before, presumably.

Like Badders has posted before, and like all of us who have helped in food banks know, people are actually going hungry now.

“In the vast majority of seats across Scotland, it’s only the Labour Party that can beat the SNP.
There are a few different cases in the Borders and the Highlands, where the Tories might be better placed.”

The leader of Scottish Labour is recommending Labour voters in those seats vote Tory ?? Confused

I wonder how well that would go down Hmm
Those unionists who vote for anyone by SNP would already have figured this out themselves.
However, the Slab leader being so blatant about it ?

Also, I thought that publicly recommending voting for another party would get you suspended from the Labour Party.
If the rules are followed.

Has Ruth Davidson been so blatant about advising Tory voters to vote Labour in seats where this could keep out the SNP ?
