Westministenders: Theresa's Common People

She came from Oxfordshire she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied geography at Saint Hugh's College
That's where politics
Caught her eye

She told them that her husband was loaded
The press barons said "In that case have a rum and coca-cola"
She said "Fine"
And in thirty seconds time she said

I want to look like common people
I want to do whatever common people do
I want to eat like common people
I want to sleep like common people
Like you

Well what else could Fiona and Nick do
They said "We'll see what we can do"

They took her to a supermarket
I don't know why
But they had to start it somewhere
So it started there
They said pretend you've got no money
She just laughed and said
"Oh you're so funny"
They smiled "Yeah”
Well we can't see anyone else smiling in here

Are you sure you want to live like common people
You want to see whatever common people see
You want to eat like common people
You want to sleep like common people
Like me

But she didn't understand
She just smiled and held Trump’s hand

Order that benefits get the chop
Tell them all to get a job
Promise to bring back the grammar school
Pretend you don’t think them a fool
But still you'll never get it right
'Cause when you're laid in bed at night
Watching the news talking about building the wall
All have to do is call your mates to fake it all

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do whatever common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
Whilst you blame it all on the EU
Because that’s all you can do

Sing along with the common people
Sing along and it might just get Brexit through
Laugh along with the common people
Laugh about leaving the EU

It’s the most stupid thing that you will do
Because you think that it is cool
You’ll call them a ‘lying foreigner’
But don’t say we didn’t warn you
You’ll regret saying we are better off out
'Cause everybody hates a benefits tourist

It doesn’t matter if you can’t do the math
With all those pockets that you grease
You’ll win the vote in Bath

You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And wish they were all white
So you tell ‘The Big Lie’

Get THE flat above THE shop
Cut your hair and get THE job
Trick some mugs and hire some fool
Pretend you are not really cruel
But still you'll never get it right
Instead you're plotting late at night
About which ‘cockroach’ will take the fall
All have to do is call your mates to fake it all
Yeah

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do what common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
As we plan to leave the EU
Because there's nothing else left to do

But ‘moan’ about how we don’t want to leave the EU.

This is interesting: Amber Rudd assures Angela Merkel that she can depend on the UK. Since when has Amber Rudd had a foreign policy brief? Where is May, where is Boris Johnson?

Most of the labour voters I know just want to vote for something that is in real opposition to the Tories and see the labour manifesto as demonstrating another way forward. They do not expect his policies to happen overnight (none of them even expect him to win) but they do want to shift the narrative from being one of blind acceptance of austerity. In this respect the fine details of the finances are not so important to them.

They support the labour manifesto because it reflects their views that the wealthy should pay more, that social care should be a priority, that people with jobs should not need food banks, that wars should not be jumped into without planning and thought, that privatisation of the rail network seems to them to be resulting in ever greater costs and little improvement.

Whether you agree with these views or not, or even think this is how people should make their decision, I think anyone trying to dissuade people from voting labour on the details of financial assessments are missing the point of why people are voting for them.

ITYM Franklin Delano Roosevelt grin - the reason the Whitehouse is accessible today ...

Cheers LH, FDR also much wiser and electable after his illness. Great bio on him on netflix, don't know if it's still there.

Home Secretary? Defence.

Who is that message being pitched at? Germany? Or to reassure at home?

This headline and photo in combination are rather misleading....

Also breaking an international agreement over the GFA isn't a bright idea when the French President is also saying "Excuse me about these border arrangements....". It gives Macron a very easy way to say piss off Britain. You deal with this shit now

Red , there is a clause in the Le Touquet Agreement allowing either side to pull give notice and it will cease after 2 years. This isn't breaking the agreement as there is provision for it. It doesn't give a right for eternity. Only with the consent of both parties. It is a relatively simple agreement with fewer parties involved and much less at stake than the GFA.

I'm not aware of any such clause in the GFA. Maybe there is, but if so that would really appear to undermine the commitment of the parties to it.

Peregrina , May just said the money would come from the strong economy they would create. Labour are silly putting actual costings out there that can be discussed. For good or bad. They should promise the world too and just say it will come from the same source as the Con's budget. The future strong economy they will create speak for pluck it out of their a*se too .

Scusi the vulgarity. Sign of the times.

bigly I fall into the category you mention. When I saw the IFS assessment my reaction was that being out by £9bn is in the margin of error for these sorts of things. It's one of those classic 'sounds big but is it really?' things. It corresponds to an error of about £5 per week on working people's tax bills on average (so less than that if you pay less than the average amount of tax, which most people do). I would be happy to accept that in exchange for an end to the austerity ideology that's had 10 years to prove its worth can come up with bugger all. I would be equally happy for 4/5 of the spending pledges to be honoured to stay on budget.

(Average=mean not median before anyone accuses me of Gove style maths)
