Westministenders: Theresa's Common People

She came from Oxfordshire she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied geography at Saint Hugh's College
That's where politics
Caught her eye

She told them that her husband was loaded
The press barons said "In that case have a rum and coca-cola"
She said "Fine"
And in thirty seconds time she said

I want to look like common people
I want to do whatever common people do
I want to eat like common people
I want to sleep like common people
Like you

Well what else could Fiona and Nick do
They said "We'll see what we can do"

They took her to a supermarket
I don't know why
But they had to start it somewhere
So it started there
They said pretend you've got no money
She just laughed and said
"Oh you're so funny"
They smiled "Yeah”
Well we can't see anyone else smiling in here

Are you sure you want to live like common people
You want to see whatever common people see
You want to eat like common people
You want to sleep like common people
Like me

But she didn't understand
She just smiled and held Trump’s hand

Order that benefits get the chop
Tell them all to get a job
Promise to bring back the grammar school
Pretend you don’t think them a fool
But still you'll never get it right
'Cause when you're laid in bed at night
Watching the news talking about building the wall
All have to do is call your mates to fake it all

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do whatever common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
Whilst you blame it all on the EU
Because that’s all you can do

Sing along with the common people
Sing along and it might just get Brexit through
Laugh along with the common people
Laugh about leaving the EU

It’s the most stupid thing that you will do
Because you think that it is cool
You’ll call them a ‘lying foreigner’
But don’t say we didn’t warn you
You’ll regret saying we are better off out
'Cause everybody hates a benefits tourist

It doesn’t matter if you can’t do the math
With all those pockets that you grease
You’ll win the vote in Bath

You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And wish they were all white
So you tell ‘The Big Lie’

Get THE flat above THE shop
Cut your hair and get THE job
Trick some mugs and hire some fool
Pretend you are not really cruel
But still you'll never get it right
Instead you're plotting late at night
About which ‘cockroach’ will take the fall
All have to do is call your mates to fake it all
Yeah

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do what common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
As we plan to leave the EU
Because there's nothing else left to do

But ‘moan’ about how we don’t want to leave the EU.

It seems the most shared stories on social media are either actively anti-tory or neutral. None we overtly pro-tory. Yet we are looking at a Tory landslide. Is this because people are choosing to vote for May even though they actually dislike the Tories or because most of the Tory voters don't really use social media and still stick to the traditional media channels, which are mainly pro-tory.

Most-shared general election stories on social media overwhelmingly anti-Tory with no sign yet of fake news

Maybe a dangerous question, but how much faith should we have in the electoral process ? Bear in mind there have been court cases in the past few years which have been quite damning of some parts ...

www.theguardian.com/uk/2005/apr/05/politics.localgovernment

A senior judge made a scathing attack on the postal voting system yesterday, condemning the government for complacency in the face of fraud which would disgrace a "banana republic".
Richard Mawrey QC, presiding over a special election court in Birmingham, warned that there were no realistic systems in place to detect or prevent postal voting fraud at the general election. "Until there are, fraud will continue unabated," he said.

RedToothBrush · 18/05/2017 17:11

I suspect we're in boiling frog territory here - like PFI.
For a second there I thought you were talking about the Tory policy for French diplomatic relations.

BiglyBadgers · 18/05/2017 17:12

I think if it was close LH I might be worried, but I don't yet think we are at the point of someone being able to pull off a landslide through electoral fraud.

prettybird · 18/05/2017 17:12

Just got my Conservative election bumf leaflet through the post because they don't have the feet on the ground Wink

6 pledges on it: front page the policy is a quote from Ruth Davidson, "You have my guarantee that the Scottish Conservatives will oppose the SNP every step of the way". On the the 2nd page: top pledge is to oppose a 2nd Indyref; the other 4 are all devolved issues (health, transport) so not in the MP's remit, with the possible except of the one saying he'll prioritise stronger economic growth to create sustainable jobs in the local community (although they usually blame the SNP government in Holyrood for lack of economic growth) Confused

So NO Weetminter policies......well, I suppose he could hardly shout from the rooftops that he'll support welfare cuts to the vulnerable and the shutting of half the DWP offices in Glasgow Hmm

No mention of Brexit or the EU either - again not surprising since the constituency voted something like 70% Remain Shock

Methinks he'll not succeed here Grin

Stupendous Red

That was in Johnson's original draft Grin

Peregrina · 18/05/2017 17:27

I think I'm going for the next prediction of loads of people being totally shocked and outraged about it when they find out about the policy. After 9th June.

100% agree. These cuts that the Tories propose apply to other people. It will come as a shock when they wake up to the realisation that to the Tories, they are 'others'.

LurkingHusband · 18/05/2017 17:33

As long as there are plenty of stories about foreigners being abused - especially non white ones - they'll be happy. Or if there's honey still for tea ?

It will be interesting to see if this does translate into votes on the day. If nothing else it would be great to see a rise in participation and engagement from a group that doesn't usually vote.

BiglyBadgers · 18/05/2017 17:56

I assume she means that she will wait until she is damn sure she will get the result she wants. If scotland wants another indyref they have to start faking to polls.

whatwouldrondo · 18/05/2017 18:05

Great lyrics Red. I bet Jarvis would be only too pleased to sing them too....

Wonder if Gove knows his timetables? Apparently not, even the 1X and 2x. He did a Dianne Abbott on LBC www.lbc.co.uk/radio/presenters/nick-ferrari/michael-gove-numbers-hopelessly-wrong/

Both my DDs had been taught their times tables by 11, another promise that is aimed at fake news. I remember when I was feeling particularly jaded by it all (as a dyslexic being expected to know / learn them by rote was and is a particular trial) I fired 7 x 8 at a group of friends, accountants, bankers, city traders included. The only ones that got it right were mothers of children aged 7-10 Hmm

whatwouldrondo · 18/05/2017 18:12

As a follow up to my comment on the last thread about Hammond manifesting Britains declining power in trade and geo political terms by parting ways with the EU's firm stance on sustainability and the environment in relation to China's Belt and Road initiative, this is an interesting analysis. Tianxia is China's ancient political practise of demanding tribute from nations, rather than actually invading and ruling them, with an implicit belief in their inferiority.

"Britain has been noticeably muted of late when it comes to criticising Beijing’s relations with Hong Kong, whether its alleged interference with democratic elections or the city’s publishing industry. Is this an example of tianxia spreading into Europe? Is Britain showing deference to the new superpower?

“From the Chinese perspective, Europe is a bunch of very small countries that can be played off against one another,” French says. “This is one of the central ploys of the tianxia playbook. Britain, as the least European, has always seemed to the Chinese as perhaps the most susceptible to this kind of thing, the easiest to pick off.”

These suspicions have only grown following Brexit.

“The British leadership feels it needs to score some kind of gain in terms of trade relationships to show that Brexit is not going to be a total disaster. China is awake to this and will find ways to play its advantages vis-à-vis a disaggregated Europe.”

We got a letter today from Theresa, just about the first bit of targeted election literature we have received from the conservatives. It is all the usual strong and stable, the importance of a mandate for the best Brexit deal for the nation, coalition of chaos nadedahdedah.... repeated ad nauseam. Project fear on steroids.

Interestingly though there is a paragraph tacked on that explicitly says "A vote for the Liberal Democrats or any other party in the you know where constituency is a wasted vote. All it will do is deliver a hung parliament and end in chaos, giving Jeremy Corbyn a route to becoming Prime Minister"

Another interesting soundbite "So in the days of shock election results and global uncertainty, no-one can ever be really sure who will win, and with so much at stake, lets not risk it"

All it achieved was to motivate me anew to get out there with the leaflets and addressing and stuffing envelopes. I think they have really got the mood of this constituency wrong, they need to have a little more respect for local intellects. Stupid patronising woman, or rather Conservative Central Office......

HashiAsLarry · 18/05/2017 18:28

Sort of makes me want to vote for them Grin

LurkingHusband · 18/05/2017 18:29

What's the threads opinion of my definition of Conservatism ?

Conservatism (n). A system of government perpetuated by the premise of ensuring voters can always feel better than the worst off

(as opposed to my brand of politics which would like to ensure there are no worse off)

I'm sorry to say that there are several MN posters on various threads that inspired the definition.

What's the OEDs email address ?

Peregrina · 18/05/2017 18:45

I'm going to have to grit my teeth and read the Tory manifesto from cover to cover. Just so that I can argue the points.

I have been out there addressing envelopes, too. Personally I would like a coalition - a genuine one, as the wartime one was, with the best brains from all parties.

RebelAllianceUK · 18/05/2017 18:46

It's a good definition Lurking Sad

I feel really depressed about the state of this country tonight. Can anyone tell me happy stories about living in Germany or Cyprus, please?

Cailleach1 · 18/05/2017 18:49

Love your 'Common People', Red.

Where is the costing for Brexit? Am I being obtuse or something to think that that will have more than a little effect on all the other things mentioned. Certainly from the Con's who kinda brought it about.

Cailleach1 · 18/05/2017 18:52

I think there are no costings 'cos the Con's want to crash and walk away. Blaming the EU all the while. It is beyond them.

Cailleach1 · 18/05/2017 19:01

Also, everyone getting their knickers in a twist about 'the bill'. The methodology hasn't been adopted yet. The amount was published by the Financial Times, not the EU.

"In response to claims from the former Ukip leader Nigel Farage that the EU was seeking “a ransom” in a divorce bill estimated by some to be as much as €100bn, Barnier said: “I have never quoted these figures. The figures will depend on the methodology we adopt and the actual date of the UK’s exit. It is not [me] who will set a figure.”

More worrying is this;

“We might be working on transitional measures post-Brexit, on a phasing-out period and a phasing-in towards the new relationship, but the real transition period is now, before exit,” he said. “I would like to recommend all economic players, all economic operators, to make use of this period, so that the day of this exit, probably March 2019, is as orderly as possible.”

Soz if someone has posted this. I haven't seen it. So the only real transitional period may be now. Anything post Brexit hasn't been agreed. And I suspect the EU are anticipating the very real possibility that the UK are toying with the idea of just crashing out.
