Westministenders: Theresa's Common People

RedToothBrush · 18/05/2017 13:50

She came from Oxfordshire she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied geography at Saint Hugh's College
That's where politics
Caught her eye

She told them that her husband was loaded
The press barons said "In that case have a rum and coca-cola"
She said "Fine"
And in thirty seconds time she said

I want to look like common people
I want to do whatever common people do
I want to eat like common people
I want to sleep like common people
Like you

Well what else could Fiona and Nick do
They said "We'll see what we can do"

They took her to a supermarket
I don't know why
But they had to start it somewhere
So it started there
They said pretend you've got no money
She just laughed and said
"Oh you're so funny"
They smiled "Yeah”
Well we can't see anyone else smiling in here

Are you sure you want to live like common people
You want to see whatever common people see
You want to eat like common people
You want to sleep like common people
Like me

But she didn't understand
She just smiled and held Trump’s hand

Order that benefits get the chop
Tell them all to get a job
Promise to bring back the grammar school
Pretend you don’t think them a fool
But still you'll never get it right
'Cause when you're laid in bed at night
Watching the news talking about building the wall
All have to do is call your mates to fake it all

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do whatever common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
Whilst you blame it all on the EU
Because that’s all you can do

Sing along with the common people
Sing along and it might just get Brexit through
Laugh along with the common people
Laugh about leaving the EU

It’s the most stupid thing that you will do
Because you think that it is cool
You’ll call them a ‘lying foreigner’
But don’t say we didn’t warn you
You’ll regret saying we are better off out
'Cause everybody hates a benefits tourist

It doesn’t matter if you can’t do the math
With all those pockets that you grease
You’ll win the vote in Bath

You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And wish they were all white
So you tell ‘The Big Lie’

Get THE flat above THE shop
Cut your hair and get THE job
Trick some mugs and hire some fool
Pretend you are not really cruel
But still you'll never get it right
Instead you're plotting late at night
About which ‘cockroach’ will take the fall
All have to do is call your mates to fake it all
Yeah

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do what common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
As we plan to leave the EU
Because there's nothing else left to do

But ‘moan’ about how we don’t want to leave the EU.

Ukip suspend candidate over 'racist' tweets

Is it a requirement of being a UKIP candidate to try and get yourself suspended? Is there some sort of in joke here?

With the Tories being so dominant atm, they are much more likely to win SNP seats than Labour, anyway.
However, I'd have thought SLab would want to maximize their own votes, to try to look like they are still a major player in Scotland. Not gift votes to the Tories.

The leader of Scottish Labour is recommending Labour voters in those seats vote Tory
Also Confused and Hmm

Lot of movement in those polls, then. Not enough, but there's clearly traction. Nice lib dem rise too, despite all the attacks on Tim Farron.

Well, this is all getting rather interesting...

Had a lengthy and surprisingly respectful debate today with an avid Tory voting Leaver at our archery club. We agreed on a surprising number of things. But he's still voting for Teresa May because 'she's strong'.

Facepalm. This is still what we are up against.

On that graph many many posts ago I come out a rampant libertarian leftist. Pretty accurate, actually. Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 20/05/2017 22:15

May presumably decided this is the only time she can get away with removing some of the expensive goodies from better off pensioners
"Brave" decision.
I wonder how long before she is forced to backtrack Hmm

RedToothBrush · 20/05/2017 22:28

Survation:

One of the most controversial policies in the Conservative manifesto related to changes to how social care is to be funded, with proposed changes raising the amount of someone’s ‘assets’ that are protected from £23,250 to £100,000, but including someone’s family home in what is considered their ‘assets’ for the first time.

Nearly half (47%) of all respondents oppose the proposed changes, compared to just over half apiece who supported the changes (28%) and didn’t know (26%).

Further, if these proposals were enacted into law, six-in-ten people said that they would be more anxious about getting older, while more than half were more anxious about securing a future for their children (53%), caring for older relatives (53%) and owning a house (52%).

However, despite opposition to the proposals, the public are not convinced that the moniker some have placed on the policy – the “Dementia Tax” – is fair; 37% think it is fair to call the policy the “Dementia Tax”, compared to 39% who think it’s unfair.

Compare with earlier

Fairly big difference in percentages supporting / opposing dementia tax policy. Which makes me raise an eyebrow.

Note following is about LAST week's yougov poll

Election Data @Election_Data
Hard to get a grip of what is changing but a couple of things. YouGov had 45% of their 18-24s saying they were certain to vote last week. This week they have 57% of 18-24 year olds saying they are certain to vote. And there's also been a flip amongst 25 to 49 year olds. Last week they had Tories up 7 amongst 25-49 yr olds. This week they have Labour up 8 amongst 25 to 49 year olds. I'm comparing the 4-5 May YouGov poll with the 16-17 May one btw - tables for tonights not out yet.

Same story with Survation btw. In their last poll they had the Tories up 20 points among 35-54 yo's. Tonight's poll has it down to 43:37. Tonight's survation also has support amongst over 55s increasing for the Conservatives. Pretty clear (so far) that middle-aged voters are moving away from the Conservatives in the last week. Is it a blip? A trend? A clusterfuck? It might be nothing. Or something. Or pfffft.

Interesting point:
Jeffrey Jones @jeffrey62093861
Just imagine how this concentrates the mind. Your in your 40s and looking forward to a lottery win of £300k. Now £100k. Dacia instead of XF.

Affecting middle aged voters more than pensioners? Sampling issue? Love for Labour manifesto?

Kezia Dugdale had gone up in my estimation when she suspended the Aberdeen City councillors for going into coalition with the Conservatives although I think technically it was for doing it without having got prior approval . I thought she was showing some principles.

She's just plummeted again Hmm

I don't think there are any SNP "marginals" seats where Labour would be a more viable alternative than the Tories - so Ruth doesn't need to make such a call to arms.

It'll be interesting to see whether I get any Labour or LibDem literature this time around. Didn't get any for the council elections but got 2 leaflets and 2 letters from the SNP and one leaflet from the Conservatives.

In this GE campaign, have already had one leaflet from the Conservatives (dh decided it made good kindling for the braai Wink) which only had a message from Ruth saying she would "resist the SNP every step of the way" (the whole of one side of the flyer) and that the local candidate would "stop a second referendum" and 4 other things (like health and transport) that would be nothing to do with him as an MP as they are devolved to Holyrood (does he know something we don't? Hmm) except perhaps the economy (but they blame the SNP for that anyway Confused) nothing whatsoever to do with the UK Government's economic policy Hmm

Not a dicky bird about Brexit Hmm

RedToothBrush · 20/05/2017 22:43

Election Data @Election_Data
I'd be shocked if Tory discipline broke down on the back of this btw. I went through 2015. They had plenty of reason to do so then!

So I think we're seeing familiar patterns. The younger, urban voters are getting behind Labour. Older, suburban, rural are going Tory. What remains (as always) is the great mass of middle-aged, middle-income, suburban 'swingy' voters which decide seats and elections. They appear
to be weakening in their support for the Tories. These groups fixate on the economy more than other issues. They won't like an "extreme" Brexit as it may hurt their finances, and they won't much like the Bank Of England warning about challenging times for household finances. But having said ALL THAT it may just be a blip and we're back to normal by midweek :-D

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 20/05/2017 22:54

Well SOMEONE doesn't like the dementia tax. To the point that the TORYGRAPH have this story:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/05/20/theresa-may-did-not-consult-social-care-plans-senior-government/
Theresa May 'did not consult' on social care plans, senior Government sources claim

Senior Government sources have told The Sunday Telegraph they were left “completely surprised” by the wide-ranging package of reforms announced this week.

A series of social care policies were due to be put out to consultation this summer, including some of those adopted by the party in its manifesto.

However the changes would have been followed by months of consideration with less political risk if they were dropped or altered after industry feedback.

She didn't consult or do impact assessments for Brexit so why is anyone remotely surprised. She doesn't do evidence based anything or consultation she does what God tells her.

The more important thing here is that's she's pissing people off to this degree. Hardly the sign of strong and stable. More like on going brewing resentment and dislike of her. Within the party.

I think it's middle class people who are most likely to say & believe that nowadays tbh.

The actual working class voters have had decades of being ignored & taken for granted by 'their' party and have chinned them off in increasing numbers over the last 2 elections (and probs this one too).

BigChocFrenzy · 21/05/2017 00:37

These measures which hit some of the most faithful Tory voters suggest to me ...

Timing - May is doing this now, while she has sufficient political capital to get away with it
Reason - May expects the economy to worsen enough that she'll have to cut spending ruthlessly.

RedToothBrush · 21/05/2017 00:38

Ha yes.

Anonymous Tory quoted in one of the newspapers tomorrow as saying that we need to get the manifesto out of the press and start attacking Corbyn again.

They are actively saying we don't want to talk policy cos ours are shit. We are better off throwing shit instead.

It's fucking beautiful.

What was the policy on trains again? I'm not sure I particularly like that one but I hear it's pretty popular. And houses? I love the LDs rent to buy one.

What was that you say Corbyn's a tosser? Yes yes got that memo ages ago.

Children's lunches you say.

Rinse repeat.

Dementia Tax.
