Were there any LD supporters who voted Leave?

I am a "natural" Labour supporter and former party member. I supported Labour Leave in the EU Ref and will be voting Conservative for the first time in my life in the GE. I wondered if there were any LD Leavers. I know this might be rare but I wondered if there were any at all. Or is LD Leaver an impossible combination.

I have in the past voted both LibDem and Green.

I also voted to Leave. I'm in Scotland.

I will not vote LibDem for a long time. They assume that we have all changed our minds on leaving the bloody EU.

I am appalled by the Scottish Greens who have got into bed with the Nats in Scotland. I feel utterly betrayed by this! The Nats aren't even remotely a "green" party!

Which pushes me, for the first time ever, to the Tories. Never thought I would see the day. We are utterly sick of Sturgeon and her corrupt and useless cronies in Scotland.

I know kitty. I'm staging a one woman campaign on this but I don't think it's very effective though Sad

When friends who vote conservative complain about the NHS though Angry

Really, REALLY? You didn't think the NHS would be screwed under a Tory government? Has everyone forgotten the 90s?

Just read the thread. I am a lifelong labour voter and probably will continue to vote labour this time, with a heavy heart. As someone said upthread, I'd probably rather eat my arm than vote conservative and I'm not giving the libdems my vote. I am also a remainer.

The other thing I had to pick up on was I think a Conservative recovery in Scotland is likely. To what exactly ? The last time any conservative party was able to win any more than 1 seat was 1992 , so 25 years ago. Apart possibly from Ruth Davidson's popularity - which has taken a bit of a tumbling over the rape clause this past week, I am not sure that the tories are any more popular today in Scotland than they have been over the past 20 years.

Bolshy

Incidentally, the Labour Party haven't slagged off leave voters as far as I can tell- you can't blame them for what a click-bait columnist in the guardian says

Diane Abbott?

Also I have always thought of the Labour party as a movement, rather than just MPs and the central organisation and yes, plenty of people within that movement have insulted leave voters.

And England is thriving under the conservatives. Please don't foist them on us because you're annoyed with SNP. Genuine plea Grin

Your campaign is important to me Bolshy Grin. I remember the 90s.

I can't imagine why anyone who claims to have previously had a social conscience could vote for the psychopathic party. It just means you've got over your conscience and have had your mind infiltrated by The S*n/Fail.

I have to admit, wrong, I have stopped paying attention to anything Diane abbot says. I even turn off the radio when she comes on (ditto McDonell) Blush

Charlie - I think the tories would have to be doing something extraordinary to get back to the heyday of 1992 with 10 seats though. Still not overwhelming.

Bolshy - absolutely.

But neither of your statements are reflected in current opinion polls.

ie in Scotland, the SNP are polling at about 47%, and in the Uk as a whole, the tories are also polling about that.

So the conclusion I come to is that people who hate the SNP are more vocal on MN than in real life, and the people who despise TM are more vocal on MN than in real life.

Tory party have been pretty damning about remainers but I know plenty of members of the "metropolitan elite" that will vote for them. Sadly. Your average Tory voter has a thicker skin, it would appear.

Definitely, Mother. IRL people just vote for the easiest option. TM looks like she's most in charge, we'll go for her in a time of uncertainty.

Nevermind that she has, in part, caused the uncertainty, but hey.

I guess when the population is split as it has been over this stupid nonsense, both sides are going to feel insulted. For me the worst is traitor.

BUT where I'm getting frustrated is the constant repetition I hear from Leave voters that we MUST have Brexit whatever the cost, even if the reasons they voted for it prove not to happen. So we must ignore economic news, silence opposition, decry experts, just so we can "have Brexit"

I don't recognise this as what is happening and think you may be charicaturing leavers. Obvs I don't know as I don't know where you are hearing this but certainly on MN, leavers can put forward totally sensible and coherent views on stuff to be met with flat denial that they have done so.

Since June 23rd we have stopped being people who simply voted "Remain" or "Leave" and become Leavers or Remainers (I won't use the more offensive terms).

I agree with this.

Hard to see how we will ever come back together

I agree with this and think it is key to how the politics of this country will evolve in the next few decades.

It is for me. She has done a very good job of increasing division in this country in a way that I find very troubling. A good PM needs the ability to pour oil on troubled waters and she has shown a complete inability to do this.

Wrong - We heard TM in the HoC this week telling us that she is holding the GE because the people in Parliament are working against her, which isn't even true so far. So add to that list - silencing opposition that isn't even there.

Report
squishysquirmy · 22/04/2017 08:33

I think part of the problem is is that she asks for unity etc, but seems to interpret "coming together" as meaning no dissent, and everyone who disagrees shutting up and not asking any difficult questions.
She's never going to heal division this way.
It should be possible to disagree without trading horrific insults (we do it on here often enough!) Wink

We base that opinion on what we see in the media, wrong. This is how leavers are portrayed in the Mail, express, and to a lesser extent, the telegraph. It's also because this is the path the government are following. They are driving the country down the "hard Brexit at all costs" path and claiming this is what leavers want. And people are voting for it. So what are we supposed to think? That you're all actually really reasonable but have decided to vote against what you believe in? That the things that May, Johnson, Gove, Dacre et al have said are a figment of our imagination?

Report
Bolshybookworm · 22/04/2017 08:38

Again, this comes back to the government stoking division for their own ends.

WrongTrouser - I have been called... Whiner, Remoaner, Libtard (this is particularly disgusting), Traitor, Saboteur, Enemy of the People, Terrorist-lover, Refugee-lover (as if that's a bad thing?), Anti-democratic, Coward (because apparently I don't have the 'courage' to be part of go-it-alone Britain)...

But at least I'm not Gina Miller. The pure hatred against her from Leavers goes way beyond anything I've seen online. I can't believe the poison that seems to lurk just below the surface in this country and am truly concerned about the division the referendum has revealed. Call me naive, but I never believed 'ordinary' people were capable of the vile thoughts I've seen on some 'Leave' Facebook pages - pages that have thousands of followers (here's an example: Hope Le Penn hammers the French into life then the fight back can begin ....muzzie slaughter!!!). I know some people will say things online that they may not say IRL, but I'm astounded that these thoughts actually enter people's heads, even if they would never act on them.

I don't recognise this as what is happening and think you may be charicaturing leavers.

But our very own PM is ignoring economic news, trying to silence opposition (ditto some of our mainstream press), and experts have been decried for about a year now, starting with Michael Gove's stupid comment. That is not 'caricaturing leavers'. It's what is actually happening.

God help us, if someone who tells us five times that black is black (i.e. no election before 2020) now declares with a straight face that black is white.

Still if people want to destroy the NHS and Education it's up to them. I will be looking out for the names of some of the more vociferous Leavers on these threads whinging about not getting school places, not getting hospital appointments etc.
