Small Lexit point of order. It is not that there are no solutions on the Left. It is more that there is no-one on the left sufficiently distinct from special interest groups yet connected to voters to get them a hearing let alone implement them.

Interesting analysis on Saudi from LD on the news yesterday. They are starting to think about moving their economy from oil dependence and cushy non-jobs to a properly productive model with everyone contributing - kind of approaching the problem of stagnation from the other end.

SemiPermanent · 11/02/2017 11:05

Katya Adler who did that documentary:

Speaks fluent English, Italian, Spanish, German & French, and has learned Arabic & Hebrew.

boredofbrexit · 11/02/2017 11:19

Howabout: What about Gisela Stuart? (sorry if this is a misspelling of her name but the dog is attacking my phone and I can't concentrate)
She is a good speaker, calm, not easily riled, stays on target.

TheFullMrexit · 11/02/2017 11:26

YY Gisela is v interesting character. Worked on a team in the EU for Blair and saw first hand like Leadsome ( where has she dissapeared too!) that the EU cannot be changed from within. Its on a different course entirely.

Also her up bringing has made her wary of large federalizing blocks, as well it should, if anyone paid attention to history it should make us all very wary.

howabout · 11/02/2017 12:40

Lots of interesting ideas from the dozen or so Lexit MPs and even some of the more pragmatic Remainers like Wes Streeting, Liz Kendal and Yvette Cooper. However there is a disconnect in the PLP which I am not sufficiently politically involved to understand. There is also a lack of courage in accepting political reality to move to Lexit rather than walking a tightrope pleasing no-one - ironic since JMD and JC are seen as conviction politicians with more than passing Lexit sympathy.

They have not learned from Labour's Scotland experience - if you keep compromising to the right then the left give up on you and find an alternative.

scaryteacher · 11/02/2017 12:56

Did anyone see the Katya Adler thing on BBC2 this week? Most people seemed to think the EU is holed below the waterline, except Verhofstadt. He and Schulz scare me.

SemiPermanent · 11/02/2017 12:58

Verhofstad is very much immersed, enamoured & blinkered wrt the EU, isn't he?!

He's almost evangelical.

scaryteacher · 11/02/2017 13:07

This has updated since I posted!!!

Katya Adler lied. She said that the streets and roads in Brussels are orderly! After 10 years here, I sill refuse to drive in downtown Brussels, and ensure I have my will up to date every time I venture on to the Ring.

Semi there are many EU evangelists living in Brussels, and talking to some of them is quite scary. Verhofstadt is evangelist in chief though.

Mrexit The 2% GDP on defence is for NATO, which is not, and never has been part of the EU; indeed, it predates it. The NATO nations who are also EU member states, apart from a few, have no interest in paying more for defence when Uncle Sam picks up the tab. That may well be changing now, as a couple have suddenly started to agree to find more funds.

Agree that the EU won't change from within, but that may be more to do with the Eurocrats like Verhofstadt, Schulz (now an ex MEP), and Juncker, and those fonctionnaires at the Commission as opposed to the member states.

Good point scary; the appetite for change is apparent but is there a mechanism?

TheFullMrexit · 11/02/2017 13:50

scary I know RE Nato, its kind of what I mean when people say EU has fostered peace, Has it crap!

As semi says its Nato etc which are the main force and even then only because of the might of NOT THE EU - but of the USA.

Just watched the documentary I am also in awe of her language skills. Very very interesting documentary. Very interesting.

The EU officials look grey and ill. Verhofstad - oh dear. Totally agree people like him are probably the rot in the heart of it all. More EU, More EU, we need MORE EU - to survive.

very very scary. And so sad to see the poor areas of wasteland.

Urghhhhhhhhhhh Horrid man!

www.express.co.uk/news/world/765317/EU-Army-Guy-Verhofstadt-bloc-own-military-Britain

"BBC journalist Katya Adler was left questioning the former Belgium Prime Minister and telling him he was the "only optimistic voice" left calling for deeper EU integration.

Eurosceptic parties have enjoyed growing support in the last 12 months, with this year's elections in the Netherlands, France, Germany and possibly Italy being viewed as a critical test of the EU's durability.

Despite this Mr Verhofstadt, who is charged with conducting the Brexit negotiations for the European Parliament, said: "What we feel is that since Brexit something had changed.

"I thought after Brexit ‘Oh, we’re going to now have a referendum in the Netherlands about Nexit, a referendum in Denmark about Dexit'.

"It didn’t happen. What we see is exactly the opposite."

When Adler told Mr Verhofstadt his views were in contrast to everything she had witnessed, the MEP dismissed her warnings.

IamWendy · 11/02/2017 18:50

Really interesting documentary! Is there any truth in what Marine La Pen said, that 'left ' and 'right' don't really cover today's political persuasions, rather 'Patriots' or 'globalists'? Because I've done those quizzes, to see where I lie on the political spectrum, and I come up as communist/nationalist!

boredofbrexit · 11/02/2017 19:01

Not sure about the patriots - thats a bit emotive imo - but there is something in globalist/anti-globalist.....

And congrats on 'finding yourself' Wendy!Grin

TheFullMrexit · 11/02/2017 19:06

I am glad everyone on here went on about it - because I really enjoyed it Grin but thought it may be more positive on the EU and I really cant stomach any more of that BBC propaganda anymore. Smile but It was good.

Although I found Marine P face a little OTT when interviewer mentioned her party being racist etc Hmm its what her party is known as - why the shock!

boredofbrexit · 11/02/2017 19:15

She is trying to distance her party from her fathers politics. probably was a bit cheesed off that his legacy lingers?

SemiPermanent · 11/02/2017 19:23

Interestingly I've mentioned the doc on the WM thread a couple of times, asked if anyone has seen it - even dropped the iPlayer link on there - but not one response.

It's much more newsworthy to get to the bottom of why I found a blog self indulgent apparently.... GrinGrin

boredofbrexit · 11/02/2017 19:27
