Debbie the Scandinavians are doing the best job with reducing infections from chicken - super strict farm hygiene and less intensive farming is the way to go.

Sorry been out all afternoon. Just wanted to clarify the Mini bus working hours thing. My friend only wanted to work one hour a day Mon to Fri in term time, then Fri and Sat evenings taxi-ing. So not exactly 7 days a week and really fitted in well with his family commitments.

www.ciwf.org.uk/news/2015/07/300-million-hens-are-still-in-cages

"This means that almost 60% of Europe’s 500 million hens still spend their lives farmed in cages. Whilst an improvement on the old barren cages, ‘enriched’ cages still do not permit hens to carry out their natural behaviours - they can barely even stretch their wings"

“The industry heralds these cages as making vast improvements on the banned barren battery cages.

The ‘enrichment’ in these cages is little more than window dressing.”

"Over half the EU’s 500 million hens now live in ‘enriched’ cages, meaning that existing laws don’t address the welfare of almost 300 million hens. The question is, can you spot the difference between a barren battery cage and an ‘enriched’ cage?"

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/the-end-of-battery-farms-in-britain-but-not-europe-6281802.html

But while almost all British egg producers will be compliant with the new EU-wide law – which will ban the keeping of egg-laying hens in barren battery cages from this Sunday – many European countries will continue to keep battery hens.

Spain, France, Poland and others admit they will not be ready to drop battery cages (or just refuse to say when they will be ready) despite having had 13 years to prepare for the change in the treatment of farm animals.

This has led to fears that cheaper, illegal eggs from the Continent will flood into UK wholesalers, manufacturers and caterers – undercutting British egg producers, who say they feel "let down" by the Government's refusal to unilaterally ban eggs from non-compliant EU states. Battery cages prevent hens from exhibiting natural behaviour such as wing flapping, perching and foraging. Battery cages, the most common method of egg production, allow 550cm sq space per bird, less than a sheet of A4 paper.

Sorry to be a bore, its just I am flummoxed at the blind acceptance that food from the EU is automatically of higher welfare standards. And that there is a trusting nature that because EU law decrees something - then it is so.

I think someone said they want to stay in the EU so they can eat nice eggs and meat Shock ^^

From enriched cages no doubt Shock

I have become a fan of Peter Brookes cartoons in the Times.

His study of Blair as a strutting peacock was brilliant as they all are.

boredofbrexit · 03/02/2017 22:18

So now our Theresa has 2 Donalds and 2 Phils to manage. Good job Boris, David and Liam can be trusted not to cause a riot in the playground when left to their own devices Grin

Anyone in any doubt about why they voted Brexit should have a look at Guy Verhofstadt on Hard Talk this week. My old boss is Belgian so I perhaps appreciate his sense of the ridiculous better than most.

My friends in the US are musing on manners and using political views as a class marker.

Debbie - who is blindly accepting that EU foods are of higher welfare standards than UK? Who has said they want to stay in the EU so that they can buy nice meat and eggs?
