...but, if many of the migrants don't have a passport, how will they be allowed to Britain anyway? And presumably they would need a ticket for the ferry or the train.

Sorry, just realised I've misunderstood a little.
But I don't understand why, if some has to present a ticket to board, why their passport wouldn't be checked as well.

As long as we were in the EU, the French couldn't make a decent case for sending the border back to our shores. Now that we've voted to leave they will be more than happy to send them all over to us to deal with. Having our border in a different country is not a common arrangement...

The thing I get confused by with this issue is this. So, immigration borders are now moved to Kent and the UK is expected to deal with the Calais problem. But then, the UK says no so where does the potential immigrant go to? France or their country of origin? If back to France and then France says no, aren't we going to end up with an entire population living in the tunnel?!

Le Touquet, it's a bilateral agreement between us and France. I don't believe it's anything to do with the EU, but brexit has no doubt fuelled the fire. I guess this was inevitable at some point or other.

There isn't any check on disembarking, you go straight off into Paris/London/Folkstone/Dover, thats the advantage.

People will be able to get on, have a ticket, but their passport check will only be on arrival.

Once they get to England, the French will do a Gallic shrug and it will be our problem. Once they're off the boat they will all claim asylum, and we'll have to process them and give them somewhere to live and something to live off.

However, when this was brought up before the referendum, it was, apparently, "Project Fear". Along with the Pound reaching parity with the Euro, the economy shrinking, foreign investment stagnating etc. etc...

About the only thing that wasn't forecast was a massive increase in racist and xenophobic incidents, but then the Brexiteers would have dismissed that just as blithely.

I thought it was up to travel companies to make sure people were eligible eg those families going to south africa who were not allowed to fly without letters of authorisation from absent parents?

And whether or not the UK (yes Mr Sarkozy, it's the UK you're dealing with here, not England) is allowed do border checks in France, won't France still be controlling their border and therefore everyone still needs a passport?

The responsibility for ensuring that passengers are properly documented is still on the carrier. If you travel out of the UK you have to present your documentation to the airline etc.
You don't see immigration on the way out of the UK to the US.
The upshot will be much more security before any flight, ferry of train actually gets to a port.

The French don't check your passport as you leave.

On the UK side, sometimes they swab your vehicle, looking for explosives. I think that's more to do with wanting to ensure criminals don't escape legal process in the UK, than anything else. They don't check your passport as a matter of course. (I guess they would if your vehicle tested positive for explosives, though, but that's never happened to us. )

The French are infamous for passing the buck on this question. The illegal immigrants who enter France via italy are pushed back into italy if caught. If not caught, or enter from Germany or Belgium, and arrive in Calais with intent to arrive in the UK, they are pushed to the UK.

Why can't they enforce the Dublin Regulation and stop being cunts about It?

But they're not pushed to the UK are they, they are held in France and taken back to France if they come here and were registered there, as stated under Dublin.

Why leavers thought this arrangement wasn't good enough I don't know.

As for Dublin, France is passing the buck to both a italy and the UK when it comes to illegal immigrants and refuses to do its share, and tbth, one could argue that when they are picked up at sea the flag under which the boat sails would be the first place they set foot in within Europe, so if the French navy pick up illegal immigrants they should be taken to French, same for British boats. Instead they are all dumped on Italy and a once beautiful penisola has become Europe's African nation ( with the subsequent rise in crime) and italy does fuck all to implement Dublin either (fingerprinting is non existent) and it suits the coops fine as it's their way of making money, big money. As one mafioso (whohad his hands in every political pot in rome) 'illegal immigrants make you rich, there's more money in illegal immigration that drug dealing'

The only difference is poor old Silvio isn't planding a political comeback like sarkozy is for the 2017 presidential elections.

It's likely the border controls will be shifted to the UK after Brexit.

France can just pass on the problem to the UK as it will be under no obligation to accept the return of migrants if the UK is no longer one of the countries covered by the Dublin III regulation.

France should keep the border, but we should offer more support to them with this issue.

We should take much more responsibility that we do. Having rushed into war with Iraq, we have contributed to the destabilisation of the Middle East. Getting rid of Gadafy has helped make Libya lawless and a conduit for refugees.

I think what people forget is that the UK border is not in France at every point of exit. From Ouistreham the UK border is in Portsmouth, from Dieppe it is in Newhaven. There are French border checks and you cannot board the ferry without a valid passport. It is just how it used to be before the border moved to Calais.

ah that makes sense. we had 2 separate passport checks at cherbourg - both french - then british one in britain. seems to work fine.

I'm always a bit surprised we don't seem to have more of a problem than we do with undocumented migrants arriving by water in GB's other harbours in trawlers or dinghies, as opposed to well-policed places like Calais and Dover.

Sarkozy is running again for French President, that's why he's discussing the issue.
