I voted for him in 1997, my first Gen Election. I was completely taken in by his style snd charisma, and the whole Cool Britannia thing. What a mug I was.

Hmm, I haven't agreed with anything he's said since about 1998, but on this, I think he's right.

I'm a never vote labour again because of Iraq person.
But I heard him on r 4 this lunchtime and he made total sense, I have to say. If only now we had a political leader in power (of any party) who could communicate what needs to be done so simply and clearly.

Funny how once we were in Iraq he won an election, with a far bigger majority than this government. Funny that the opposition also backed the Iraq war at the time. Look up Theresa May's voting, or what Boris voted.

I was an activist for the Stop the War Coalition, I worked bloody hard to oppose it but we were very much a minority, a large and vocal one, but most people disagreed with us.

Its become fashionable to hate Blair, Iraq aside I think he did some very good things for the country, but I can't forgive him for Iraq.

There is a very, very revisionist view of history going on where Blair took us to war with no ones backing. It isn't true.

Oh and if you say:" He lied" well, that information was basically out there, there were lots of sources about Iraq's WMD capability. I wonder if many of you will be as revisionist about brexit when it all goes tits up.

smallfox.. When the question of war goes to parliament, its generally accepted that MPs vote with the sitting government. The reason being, the vast majority of the House, and certainly the opposition, are not privvy to diplomatic negotiations, secret intelligence, Armed forces briefings etc. So in light of that, sitting governments will always be supported.

There are always a few who vote against, as concientious objectors as it were, but if you were to ask MPs for a decision based on all available facts and intelligence, it would take a year or two to make the decision.

Its then a very very very very bad thing to mislead the House..............

A vote against a war should be seen as a conscientious objection rather than opposition to the war itself.

Clearly this means that the government should not put a vote before the house unless the cassus beli is clear, even if they cannot justify it through non classified sources.

I started voting Libdem due to Blair taking us to Iraq.

It's not "revisionist" or absolving others of responsibility to dislike Blair as a key "actor" in the decision to go to war and condemn his actions, especially the "dossier", argument , Dr Kelly etc.

IMO the Blair entity is a self-serving operator of smoke and mirrors. The Chilcot Report published on 7th July will, I expect, paint a picture of a liar in thrall to the Bush Jr regime. 'Let's go to war and think of a reason later".

Blair has spent the intervening years coating himself with more teflon than a frying pan factory, but is he unimpeachable? In the interest of justice I very much hope not. We should not harbour war criminals.

I am assuming Corbyn is hanging on like he is in order to be the Labour Leader who calls for Blair's impeachment later this week.

I want to add that I think the Chilcot Report will prove that Bush and Blair knew very well that there were no weapons of mass destruction stocked by Saddam Hussein's regime, but needed the fear of their existence as a rationale for invasion.

Accusations of revisionism may be valid to some extent, but I would also point out that this was against the backdrop of Saddam remaining undefeated after Gulf War 1 and a morbid fear of instability in the middle east, not least by the Saudis, without whose co-operation Britain would have struggled to participate in the subsequent action in GW2.
