Anyone agree?

'What DO the frontal lobes of babies have to do with running the country?'

Leadsom is the same as all of the other politicians, apart from Farage. They are all run by teenage whizzkids and media spinners, they are all told what to say and have speeches written for them and are all told to try and appeal to the public by showing their "caring" side. That is how our politics works, it is based on spin and a low opinion of the public which believes that they can be taken in by this stuff.

Leadsom is no worse than any of the rest, and in fact, the reason why she is now a serious challenger to Establishment May is because Leadsom appeared so different to the rest of the political class in her debate performances where she looked serious, strong and without spin. She outdid all of the Establishment favourites who we are told are good debaters, like Sturgeon and Angela Eagle.

Hardly anyone knew Leadsom, but now lots of people think she is the best there is, based on how she performed in the debates.

RosesareSublime · 04/07/2016 21:32

But you always seem to fail to understand that the political elite in the EU have no idea what goes on either.

Your framing this as though the EU was a slick, democratic happy operation which you have been forced from.
The reality is, no one can agree on the major issues facing them, one leader makes an announcement without asking the others and its rained a crisis down on all their heads. Its utter chaos.

When someone says things like - political elite don't seem sure, it makes me even more grateful that in future we will be dealing with only one layer of political elite not the whole load in the EU as well.

claig · 04/07/2016 21:32

'AL did not come off very well in this evening’s Tory leadership hustings, according to freshly filed reports.'

I don't read the Sun, can anyone tell me who they are backing if they have declared yet. The media will spin against candidates it doesn't want.

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2016 21:33

I hope for all our sakes, that people like yourself are correct, Roses.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 04/07/2016 21:36

Not getting rave reviews of Andrea Leadsom at 1922. "Car crash" says one MP. "Fucking shambles" says another.

Members, on the other hand, would seem to beg to differ. A party leader at odds with their parliamentary party but backed by members? Sounds familiar.

Excellent. Just what we need.

LondonKiwiMummy · 04/07/2016 21:39

I'm just waiting for the Tories to send a van for DH and my eldest so they can deport them back to Europe. Hurry up chaps! Lots of foreigners needing to be sent back to wherever it is Johnny Foreigner comes from!

Sorry to burst your bubble Roses, I am personally planning on attending quite a few protests. And if Brexit Barbie Andrea "as a mum" Leadstrom is our new PM, I will attending an awful lot of them.

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2016 21:41

She said she wanted to discuss the “three Bs”: “Bankers, Brussels and babies.”

Really?

Is this what we are down to?

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 04/07/2016 21:42

Babies?

Babies?
Idiot woman.

claig · 04/07/2016 21:43

'"Car crash" says one MP. "Fucking shambles" says another.'

This looks like a replay of David Davies against Cameron. Davies was better and had more member support. Then they made their speeches. Cameron's was the usual whizzkid written stuff and Davies was good, but lo and behold, the media, some of them mates of Cameron's spinners, all reported that Davies had made a disastous speech and the BBC followed the line and the BBC showed Tory members being interviewed who said Davies's speech wasn't very good and that is how the Establishment put Cameron in.

The problem for them is that in the intervening years, the public has got wise to their tricks as shown by how they ignored their scares and voted to Leave.

Vri123 · 04/07/2016 21:44

and yet Alisvolatpropiis the idiots were protesting because they were unhappy with the result that democracy had delivered to them. So, what were they demanding? A suspension of democracy any time they don't get what they want?

Actually, the protest just simply didn't make any sense. I am not sure they had thought it through. So, there's no point trying to understand their position because its self-contradictory.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 04/07/2016 21:45

"Soundbites" redtoothbrush. Alliteration - all the better. Slogan "Take back control" - the best.

Facts are for pussies, dontcha know.

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2016 21:49

I wonder what Merkel would make of Leadsom's soundbites.

Before she devours the UK's entire economy.

Leadsom being the same women who when she got her current job at as energy minister went 'is global warming real then?'.

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2016 21:50

Perhaps demanding a referendum which was handled even vaguely well? With a proper Referendum Commission, without flagrant out and out lies being used to garner support?

The whole thing was handled appallingly, which isn't the fault of the electorate.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 04/07/2016 21:59

Still from the Guardian:

Boris Johnson says that Andrea Leadsom offers “the zap, the drive and the determination essential for the next leader of the country”.

The former London mayor also praises the energy minister as “level-headed, kind and trustworthy,” according to a statement put out by him.

Anyone still believe a single word Boris says?

Vri123 · 04/07/2016 22:03

What?! The electoral commission weren't moderating the referendum??! Are you sure?

I can't think of a single election or referendum that was not dominated by half-truths and spin. Its in the nature of the beast. It would be good if the politicians would treat us as grown ups with a longer attention span than a goldfish, but they seem to have decided that we can only manage short, oft-repeated messages. Its a bit irritating, but hey ho. Presumably some people - who have a vote - can only cope with Sun style headlines.

LineyReborn · 04/07/2016 22:17

What, like 'The people have spoken' and 'The establishment has been rumbled', that kind of crap?

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2016 22:18

And in what way is the electoral commission a referendum commission?

Do you think the same commission does the job for both in countries which have held referenda in recent years? ROI? Erm...no.

Vri123 · 04/07/2016 22:24

Eire has nothing to do with it. Why did you mention it?

Anyway.. the Electoral commission (i.e. the UK commissio) have a page on their website about their role in the referendum. You can read it here if you wish:
www.electoralcommission.org.uk/find-information-by-subject/elections-and-referendums/upcoming-elections-and-referendums/eu-referendum

GraceGrape · 04/07/2016 22:35

I see Andrea has the endorsement of Bojo, IDS, Nick Griffin of the BNP and....... Katie Hopkins. To me, it reads like a list of people I would like to see marooned on a desert island without a raft.

claig · 04/07/2016 22:36

Conservative Home poll
Andrea Leadsom 38%
Theresa Mau 37%

Establishment have their work cut out. They lost the referendum, will they lose this as well?

Expect lots of phoney media reports saying Leadsom is not doing well and Theresa May is the best by far.

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2016 22:45

I've read that page before.

I mentioned ROI because it works well an example of how referenda can be properly conducted, was that not obvious?

I know Britain has just got that little bit more inward looking but using other countries which do things better than we do is still allowed.

Shiningexample · 04/07/2016 23:06

I dont think Leadsome has the right voice, May has more gravitas

IPityThePontipines · 05/07/2016 00:16

Everything else has crashed and burned so far. Let's issue Article 50, crash our economy to smithereens and turn on each other!

Brussels, Bankers and Babies

Millyonthefloss2 · 05/07/2016 07:24

Londonkiwi - I'm just waiting for the Tories to send a van for DH and my eldest so they can deport them back

Unlike May, Leadsom has quite rightly made a pledge to guarantee the rights of EU nationals who are already in the UK.

Girlgonewild · 05/07/2016 07:32

No, it's a mistake to hand the 27 that guarantee when it is they who want their people to stay here - we need to negotiate that concession to them in return for something else as May is suggesting, wise May.
I thought May had over 100 Tory MP supporters and no one else more than about 10?

May is very good. She has gravitas as said above and is 59 and has lots of experience.
