Lots of people came out and said what a good thing the EU was. The trouble was (a) some of it was only reported in the broadsheets and (b) a lot of it was by experts (sorry to use a dirty word) who were working under the disadvantage of sticking to fact not fantasy.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 04/07/2016 20:07

The leave campaign won because "facts are for pussies" or something. Happy to look up the exact words Dominic Cummings said to the Parliamentary committee.

They won because they made promises to ordinary people, like £350m to the NHS, and a lot of people believed them. And we've all had enough of experts.

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2016 20:13

We live in a post-truth world where facts are mere details to be ignored and lies are good as long as people believe them.

Orwellian.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 04/07/2016 20:15

I blame Tim Berners-Lee Grin

Not really - but there is a scary movement towards "all knowledge is equal" or "knowledge is just opinion" which breeds twats like Gove getting away with saying 'we've had enough of experts' in a snorty way (before sending his wife to appeal for experts on FB after the vote).

RosesareSublime · 04/07/2016 20:21

And ...what facts can we get from Remain? What assurances on so many issues could Remain give us?

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2016 20:23

Remain could offer plenty of facts, just not ones which Leave voters found appealing.

Continued free movement was to many, a positive fact. For a very slim majority, it was not.

RosesareSublime · 04/07/2016 20:28

No I disagree the EU has changed beyond all recognition and it became something we never voted for. It was right, 40 + years in to give this generation the vote. A good mix of the young and people who could remember life before, and what it was supposed to be.
Its had a good try, and the majority of voters feel its best to leave the failing project.

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2016 20:32

It is silly for you not to recognise how small a majority it is, in reality.

This was no 60/40 result.

claig · 04/07/2016 20:36

Boris Johnson has just backed Andrea Leadsom

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2016 20:37

Well he wasn't likely to back Gove was he, all things considered.

claig · 04/07/2016 20:42

No, but there was a possibility he might back the Establishment candidate, Theresa May, as quite a few of his MP supporters have done.

Good to see Boris choose the candidate the Establishment is not backing.

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2016 20:44

Think it was vanishingly unlikely he was going to back TM over someone he has directly campaigned with.

claig · 04/07/2016 20:46

You have David Davies, a Brexiteer, backing the Establishment candidate as well as some other prominent Brexiteers.

claig · 04/07/2016 20:48

Chris Grayling, who had a good campiagn for Brexit, is backing Theresa May.

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2016 20:49

None of them are Boris Johnson, who became the face of the leave campaign though.

I suspect the Brexiters backing May are acknowledging that 48% of the electorate will be left unrepresented entirely, if a hardcore brexiter becomes leader.

Vri123 · 04/07/2016 20:50

It was never going to be 60/40.

I voted Leave but I can see why people would vote Remain. Perhaps, in a different part of my life, I would have voted Remain too, but me and 17 million others didn't and we were larger in number than those who choose the Remain box.

I would say, though that its amazing how vitriolic the Remainers have been this last week, wanting another referendum and accusing those who voted out of not really understanding the arguments (i.e. stupid), or much worse, calling us racists.

claig · 04/07/2016 20:53

'I suspect the Brexiters backing May are acknowledging that 48% of the electorate will be left unrepresented entirely'

I very much doubt that. Some are backing the Establishment because they think they will get promoted if the Establishment candidate wins and some believe that May, having experience, will be able to do a better job.

SwedishEdith · 04/07/2016 20:55

Where can I find out who is backing who?

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/07/2016 20:57

I don't think leave voters would take such a marginal result well, if it had been the other way round. Indeed it was Farage who said it would be untenable and he would fight for a second referendum.

People can protest against whatever they like, that's democracy for you.

If Leadsom becomes leader there will be more unrest, not less.

I have also noted a further interesting development in this post-truth, no experts needed age we seem to be living in - being called a racist is somehow worse than being one.

RosesareSublime · 04/07/2016 20:57

It doesnt matter the majority of voters wanted leave.
Vri I agree.

'I would say, though that its amazing how vitriolic the Remainers have been this last week, wanting another referendum and accusing those who voted out of not really understanding the arguments (i.e. stupid), or much worse, calling us racists.'

This is the normal way the media influences people. It is the only tactic the Establishment and media have got. They use it constantly against UKIP to try and shut them up as Cameron did when he called them "fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists". They create an air of entitlement and the media fans it for people to shut down any opposition by calling the other side, in this case the winning side of the majority of the people, "stupid", "old", "thick", "racist" etc

What has shocked the Establishment and the media is how their trick has failed and how the people ignored them. Mobs are filmed by the media calling Boris "scumbag" outside his home in the hope that that will turn the people against Boris and Brexit, but of course it does the opposite because people can see through the undemocratic manipulation for the interests of the big banks, big business and law firms who were shocked that the people said "No".

Millyonthefloss2 · 04/07/2016 21:03

I am overinvested in this for some reason. My name is Milly and I am a referendumspeculationaholic.

Yes Roses, and leave we shall.

Having a divisive, polarising leader like Leadsom, who incidentally is rather lacking in leadership experience, would be incredibly foolish. So it will almost certainly happen.
