Ethical dilemmas

My large friend couldn’t fit in my new shower.

I had a small group of friends come to stay for the weekend. One of them is massively overweight ( by her own admission ) and therefore I gave her the guest room with the brand new Ensuite so she could have privacy and not have to wander along the landing to the main bathroom. As they have now all left I went in to change the bed and clean the bathroom and have realised she didn’t have a shower all weekend. No towels moved, no wet shower tray, no damp towel.
I’ve just clicked that our new shower has a sliding door that simply doesn’t leave a big enough gap for her to get in. I am mortified. She must have been so upset. But it’s too late for me to replace the cubicle as would be too expensive.
Surely shower manufacturers should make openings big enough for larger people as standard now ?

Why are you mortified? Tell me you wouldn’t truly replace a new shower cubicle because your overweight friend couldn’t fit in it?

Yfory · 14/08/2023 18:35

The number of people on this thread shocked "she didnt wash all weekend" as if thats a disaster.

Newsflash some of us "only" have a shower three times a week/five times a fortnight. And have done for years. Its really not a problem.
Obviously its not great that she physically couldnt get into the shower but no one died through not having a shower "all weekend" (except on MN!)

Random789 · 14/08/2023 18:38

The question "Surely shower manufacturers should make openings big enough for larger people as standard now ?" seems a bit spurious. Perhaps it was tacked on to the end of the post just to make it seem that it had a point to make (rather than simply being a comment about how overweight the friend was)?
Manufacturers make showers and shower doors in all sorts of sizes, presumably so that purchasers can chose the one that they want.
If there was another bathroom along the landing, no biggie.

Tbf we don't even know the friend couldn't fit in the shower, the OP is just assuming that

The same way the OP assumed because the friend was obese she needed the extra privacy of an ensuite because walking to the main bathroom was apparently not okay

There are an awful lot of assumptions going on in the OPs head

YOU'RE mortified? Should think she's the one who would be mortified.

THIS.
You have done nothing wrong OP. Hopefully this will be a wake up call to her to change her habits and lose weight.
Now I am sure that there will be a million and one excuses as to why she is as large as this and I am 'fat-ist' or whatever silly MN term we are using this week.

Riapia · 14/08/2023 19:32

Why the obsession with showering on MN?
Never encountered it in RL.

Hmmm and then she started a thread about it all so that other people could say

Should think she's the one who would be mortified

And similar, so everybody has a jolly nice criticise...

I wonder what the op's motivation in all this is 🤔

Indeed

have heard it all now. If she's only used a hand towel it means she hasn't had a proper wash at all. I have a strip wash nearly every day and can't do that with a hand towel. Showers are not necessary for keeping clean for a few days- she's just mucky

Can’t you? I managed a split wash with a hand towel when I couldn’t so shower because of surgery.

JustfiedandAncient · 14/08/2023 20:38

Surely you should know not to have a 25cm2 shower!

JustfiedandAncient · 14/08/2023 20:41

How many towels did your other friends use? Do you also think of them stripping to clean themselves?

To be fair no one on this thread has mentioned any excuses.

I know! Same as the obsession with fat people! Only on MN!

BadNomad · 15/08/2023 02:54

Am I being thick - what about her being fat meant she couldn't use the main bathroom? I'm not understanding the privacy reason. Did she not want to be seen going into the bathroom or did you not want people to see her?

Yes you're being thick

knitnerd90 · 15/08/2023 04:27

Yes, one incident with a small shower cubicle will surely be a wake up call!

I can always tell when someone's knowledge of obesity doesn't come from reading any research on the topic.

No answer to the other questions?

Pinkflamingopants · 15/08/2023 06:14

It’s neither the shower manufacturer’s or your responsibility to ensure your friend can fit into a shower.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/08/2023 06:57

Maybe she brought her own towel?

busymomtoone · 15/08/2023 18:34

Not unusual for people to be awkward about using other peoples showers anyway - you sound like a great friend but a strip wash is perfectly acceptable. I think you are presuming/ worrying too much!!

red19 · 15/08/2023 19:08

I wouldn’t worry about the shower and she most probably brought her own towels, hence yours not been used. You were thoughtful to give her the room with the ensuite

bonzaitree · 15/08/2023 19:38

I don’t think you need to worry- if she comes again just mention she is welcome to use either bathroom and leave her to it
