Ethical dilemmas

My large friend couldn’t fit in my new shower.

I had a small group of friends come to stay for the weekend. One of them is massively overweight ( by her own admission ) and therefore I gave her the guest room with the brand new Ensuite so she could have privacy and not have to wander along the landing to the main bathroom. As they have now all left I went in to change the bed and clean the bathroom and have realised she didn’t have a shower all weekend. No towels moved, no wet shower tray, no damp towel.
I’ve just clicked that our new shower has a sliding door that simply doesn’t leave a big enough gap for her to get in. I am mortified. She must have been so upset. But it’s too late for me to replace the cubicle as would be too expensive.
Surely shower manufacturers should make openings big enough for larger people as standard now ?

I find the idea you have decided her size is the reason she hasn't showered quite odd tbh. You only have to read a 'how often do you shower' thread on here to see it's absolutely common for some people not to shower as regularly as others.

cushioncovers · 14/08/2023 15:48

They do make showers with wider openings but you didn't need it for yourself so you didn't buy it. Your guest could have had a strip wash if she wanted and as you haven't mentioned any body odour I'm guessing that's what she did. She may have showered just before getting to you and then showered when she got home. I'm guessing that's what a vast amount of people who go to festivals do. 😁

Busubaba · 14/08/2023 15:53

You expect manufacturers to cater to obese people by making their products, bigger, wider and stronger to take the weight?

Will you be happy to pay for the extra costs?

She could have had a strip wash at the sink if she wanted.

If she really is gigantic then bathing may be problematic where she is, including in her own home.

😁have you ever been to the US? Their walk showers are huge and it's standard in a lot of homes over there.

TheYadaYada · 14/08/2023 15:57

Are you seriously suggesting all domestic showers should be designed for bariatric users? That's daft.

Maybe she's one of those MNers who eschews a shower in favour of a strip wash.

Ickystickystickystickybubblegum · 14/08/2023 16:01

Should you have to change your whole bathroom for a friend who visits occasionally? No.

I would put towels, shower gel, wet wipes/face wipes, anti-perspirant, hand cream etc for all guests - those are nice touches so people can stay refreshed if they do not want to shower.

That isn't what bariatric means FYI.

Fat/larger bodies is the term to use.

She didn’t use the towels for a strip wash? She obviously wasn’t bothered about washing at all.

This tbh, whilst I feel for your friend, my aunt had problems fitting in our bathtub so she used to wash with a flannel on a night and in the morning. There are ways around it if circumstances are as they were. You shouldn't be fitting a different shower cubicle.

Don't be ridiculous

BCBird · 14/08/2023 16:08

I am very overweight. I would not worry about it. She could have asked to use the msin bathroom sbd quietly explained why to u. That's what I would have done. Don't worry.

Or people living with obesity. Larger could mean taller or more muscular people who can still use standard facilities.

Those are still large bodies...Lots of muscular/tall people also cannot use standard facilities.

Yikes this is a bit identifying OP

Maybe she just didn't want a shower? Shocking for many MN posters to grasp but when we have people to stay for a couple of days not all of them have a shower during their stay.

How can anyone go for days without a shower? It's gross.

caringcarer · 14/08/2023 16:20

Just put her in a different room next time and tell.her she is using the main bathroom.

Large is not an accurate synonym for a person living with obesity though.

Dixiechickonhols · 14/08/2023 16:21

I wouldn’t mention it. She presumably could have used main bathroom. She’ll have work arounds.
I know someone who joined slimming world with goal of fitting in shower cubicle so it must be a common thing. My en-suite shower is a square cubicle no room for a big walk in shower, someone morbidly obese wouldn’t fit.

drunkpeacock · 14/08/2023 16:24

What's the point of this thread?
She's gone so it's not like you can change anything now. As far as I can see the only reason for starting this is to have a go at your friend or fat people in general...find a hobby!

SkirtingBeard · 14/08/2023 16:24

It may not have been anything to go with her body size, OP. Some people simply don’t like using unfamiliar showers, or won’t shower out of their own homes. I remember when I lived in a rather eccentrically-plumbed college flat, having a friend of a friend to stay. I explained when she first arrived that the hot water system was ancient and she would need to let the shower run for a couple of minutes and check it was hot before getting in. Five days later I heard a scream and she actually fell backwards out of the shower cubicle and through the bathroom door into the hall, naked. She hadn’t used the shower in the previous 4 days staying and had forgotten the instruction and given herself an unexpected ice bath and toppled out into the hall with the shock!

awks21 · 14/08/2023 16:25

How large is? I'm on a serious health kick as I'm tall and my weight has crept up so much that I'm starting to realise it has an impact on the life I want to lead. If she's really big I'll bet she's encountered this before and it wouldn't be any surprise to her.

Ickystickystickystickybubblegum · 14/08/2023 16:26

AvengedQuince · 14/08/2023 16:21

Living with obesity is a term you have made up.

Larger/bigger bodies is the all-encompassing and accepted term to use. As is 'fat body'.

loulouljh · 14/08/2023 16:27

Or people could lose weight??!! (I know its hard but we cannot keep making things bigger and bigger...)She may have gone through the tray had she got in so it may be a blessing in disguise

panko · 14/08/2023 16:30

It's not really an ethical dilemma.

Next time don't assume she'll want privacy of the ensuite because she's larger than everyone else.
