What was your school motto?

Following on from a thread about latin phrases, I thought about how schools describe their values...

My school motto was Fortiter Vivamus - we live bravely.

What was yours?

Ooh Port, do I know you?

HauntedHouseMate · 28/10/2008 06:52

I think (but cannot be certain) that ours was 'Caritas et Veritas' or 'Compassion and Truth'.

It looks like it was dropped though as I cannot find any mention of it after about 1995.

So these days the pupils must all be hard faced liars!

hammouhouseofhorror · 28/10/2008 07:10

'Pour-y-parvner', strive to attain.

And though I didn't much enjoy school I do think it is an excellent life philosophy and one that I still follow to this day (mostly).

ha

bet you were one of the jocks who hated me

I was crap at netball fwiw

Flightattendant4 · 28/10/2008 08:22

(not really btw! You are always very nice on here...)

Kathyis6incheshigh · 28/10/2008 08:30

Hauntedhousemate - lots of schools have dropped their Latin ones in the last few years and replaced them with bland mission statementy ones like 'Striving for excellence'

SqueakyPop · 28/10/2008 08:31

How sad, Kathy

Are we talking SLGS here?

I too was very bad at netball. Although, come to think of it, I was probably better at netball than at hockey. Or tennis. Or athletics. Or swimming.

LadyLaGore · 28/10/2008 08:44

dunno man, i doubt my school had a motto. might have done i spose... clearly made a big impression. not.

Flightattendant4 · 28/10/2008 08:55

Yay!!! Yes, that's the one! I might just know you then...we would have sat in the canteen together skiving off all winter

Oh! I was there 85 to 92 so would have been gazing blushingly up at you, probably fancied you, etc etc...

I was mostly in the music block. my sis was there 83 to 91 and was a Latin fiend.

PortAndDemon · 28/10/2008 09:12

May have known your sister, then, although I was more of a science geek in those days.

BoffinMum · 29/10/2008 14:22

Oooh, oooh, snaf, I have also found my librarian's badge AND my chapel choir badge, and my prep school tie!!!

My life is now complete. I cannot wait for the next themed School Disco I get invited to!!! I will wear all of them!! Oh yes!!

Dh has found his BAGA 4 gymnastics certificate!! I did not realise he was so stretchy, what with his bad knees and his bad back and everything!

gingerwench · 30/10/2008 10:21

sub umbra alarum tuarum

under the shadow of your wings

Bink · 30/10/2008 11:12

Gingerwrench, that's completely weird. I can imagine the idea is meant to be angels, protectiveness, etc. etc., but it's got a definite oppressive/valley of shadow of death vibe. (What was the school like?)

Chelsie · 31/10/2008 01:07

"I ought, I can, I will" at primary school. Like this..always remember it and often recall it when making decisions it relates to.
