What was your school motto?

Following on from a thread about latin phrases, I thought about how schools describe their values...

My school motto was Fortiter Vivamus - we live bravely.

What was yours?

isn't every catholic school something like "learning through faith"

puke

gaussgirl · 25/10/2008 20:33

'Onwards' (and upwards, as we used to say.)

MaDAMNEDAnt · 25/10/2008 20:34

Habeo ut dem - I have that I may give

differentWitch · 25/10/2008 20:35

Labor Omnia Vincet- work conquers all.

georgimama · 25/10/2008 20:37

Gaussgirl, did you go to South Wilts Grammar School?

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 25/10/2008 20:37

Ad majorem dei gloriam - to the greater glory of god.

childrenofthecornsilk · 25/10/2008 20:38

I can't remember. Maybe Doodle will.

beansmum · 25/10/2008 20:40

at Primary school it was 'aim high', I don't think we had one at secondary, I'll google...

loler · 25/10/2008 20:42

Strive to succeed (Had glass wine - spelling gone to pot! Or maybe that is the quality of my education) Note it isn't in latin!

beansmum · 25/10/2008 20:42

"spes durat avorum" which means 'let the hopes of our forefathers endure' apparently

TheOldestCat · 25/10/2008 20:43

'Tuar goleuni' (toward the light).

Dottoressa · 25/10/2008 20:43

"Knowledge is no longer a fountain sealed"

uptomyeyes · 25/10/2008 20:44

The utmost for the highest - can't remember what it was in Latin

rebelmum72 · 25/10/2008 20:44

Was unthinkingly going to put "dulce et decorum est"

Actually it's "Laeti Gratias Deo Agimus"
(Let us thank God joyfully)

Hmmm.

FAQ · 25/10/2008 20:47

mine didn't have one (that I knew of?)

However the school I worked at in Zimbabwe (and where exH and I got married had)

Tot Facienda Parum Factum (so much to do so little done) - we had a photo taken underneath the arch that had it written on

tibni · 25/10/2008 20:47

"ludus supra praemium" - game before prize

SqueakyPop · 25/10/2008 20:48

wouldn't it be good to give the latin motto and then get Mumsnetters to give the English translation?

OP posts:
dilbertina · 25/10/2008 20:48

"Beyond the best there is a better".

Katisha · 25/10/2008 20:49

Perge modo

No idea

Ivvvvyygootscaaared444 · 25/10/2008 20:50

Esse Quam Videre

Smithagain · 25/10/2008 21:30

Mitis et fortis - gentle and brave

or "soft and strong and very, very long", but only when out of earshot of the Latin mistress.

Kbear · 25/10/2008 21:32

Don't what the latin is but it was "abandon hope all ye who enter"!!

Serve and Obey... for Lapin and I. It was not in Latin, though... not quite sure why, given we all HAD to learn Latin whilst we were there.
