Following on from a thread about latin phrases, I thought about how schools describe their values...

My school motto was Fortiter Vivamus - we live bravely.

What was yours?

Actions Not Words

Plonker · 25/10/2008 22:11

"For Pope and Country"

Tinker · 25/10/2008 22:13

Can't remember motto but had to write AMDG on every page of our books.

tissy · 25/10/2008 22:35

"God Give the Increase"

bronze · 25/10/2008 22:37

Levavi Oculos or Aim higher though oddly one doesnt translate as the other.

Timor Domini Principium Sapientii - the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

I learnt that for a school quiz when I was in the Second year, and have never forgotten it - which is strange as I appear to have forgotten almost everything else I learned there!

Ewe · 25/10/2008 22:56

"Where girls excel"

So lame!

Ellbell · 25/10/2008 23:00

School was 'Thy children shall be taught of the Lord'.

Motto of current institution is: 'Et augebitur scientia'

idontbelieveit · 25/10/2008 23:13

"ludus supra praemium" - game before prize
same school as tibni??

IdrisTheDragon · 25/10/2008 23:14

Primus Inter Pares

First among equals

butterflymum · 25/10/2008 23:17

Virtus in Ardui - Courage in difficulties!

butterflymum · 25/10/2008 23:18

Oops, what happened there, should read:

Virtus in Arduis

butterflymum · 25/10/2008 23:20

Tinker - it was very probably:

Ad maiorem Dei gloriam

For the greater glory of God

Tinker · 25/10/2008 23:22

Thanks butterfly. Knew it was the greater glory of god thing, just wasn't sure whether that was the actual school motto though

sherby · 25/10/2008 23:25

Ora Et Labora

Work and Prayer

chipmonkey · 25/10/2008 23:27

Veritas vos liberabit or The Truth Shall set you Free.

In other words, when sent to Mother John Bosco's office, don't lie to save your skin!

Tinker · 25/10/2008 23:28

Just looked it up (bored?) 'Gaudeamus in Domino' (Let us Rejoice in the Lord)

wessexghoul · 25/10/2008 23:29

Veritas - at my RC comp

Laborare est Orare (work is worship) at the Grammar school I moved to.

glitterball · 25/10/2008 23:30

chipmonkey - school i went to for 6th form had the same motto ....although ours was in a different order - which apparently you can do with latin - Veritas Liberabit Vos

zazen · 25/10/2008 23:30

I think mine was...

"Don't share needles"

or

"Don't get caught"

wessexghoul · 25/10/2008 23:32

Oh, and at my RC Comp all the books were stamped with AMDG - 'Ad Majorem Dei Gloria', or to the greater glory of God, I think.

llareggub · 25/10/2008 23:45

"Cymdiethas" was our motto, which is the welsh word for society.

chipmonkey · 25/10/2008 23:46

at zazen!

soultaken · 26/10/2008 16:15

O Crux Ave Spes Unica

Don't remember what it means though - can anyone enlighten me.

SqueakyPop · 26/10/2008 16:43

We only have hope by the cross?
