Is anyone else here from Kent and their child sitting the Kent test this September? thought it might be good to have a support thread going. If there already is one could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks

2 weeks to go until the results day. I'm guessing the headteachers would have received the results and going through HT appeals process now.

Mine has mentioned 11+ maybe once or twice since he sat it, but mostly keeping busy at school doing clubs and hobbies at home. There's really not much we can do at this point, and frankly it won't be the end of the world if he didn't get the results he wanted, it's just not the right path for him.

What I've said to him is, we will support him whatever happens. Which secondary school won't determine who he is or where he ends up, 11+ is just one challenge (and possibly the first of many) he has faced and there will be many more to come.

Does someone know how much marks are needed to pass (raw score out of 60 ) reasoning section.Any experienced mums here as It’s my first DC.thanks

I just saw this. My son recorded the number of questions as he came out of the exam and according to him:

English: 26 questions
Maths: 25
Reasoning: 80

Hope this helps.

@WorldofKnitting our school got them yesterday. DDS teacher was not in the classroom yesterday because she told them she had to start the appeals processes with the head! I was a bit annoyed they did this because DD had completely forgotten about it and is now asking when they will find out!!! (18th)

Wow aren't they supposed to keep these things quiet!? Good to know it's happening though. Fingers crossed for everyone 🤞

@MoggyMittens23 do you know how many marks (4/5) margarine does the headteacher appeal up to?thanks

c1403 · 05/10/2023 09:55

Hello All
What is the criteria to action a headteacher review? Would it be a few marks below the pass mark.
My daughter found the test 'easier' than her mock but her mock she was right on the minimum for English and therefore slightly missed out on a pass.

historyrepeatz · 05/10/2023 11:43

I'm not sure there's going to be one black and white list of criteria that is used by all Kent heads. I got the impression from our head that it's not a common occurrence at our school though we are just outside Kent and I don't know how many are taking it. At other schools it sounds like there are multiple appeals. Our head said last year that they were surprised one student hadn't passed and rushed to take her work from the previous year to prove her consistent high standard and results.

These links might be useful. It may be that a fail won't be the end of grammar hopes. We are in Bexley and one of the grammars will take someone who failed the Bexley test if they passed the Kent test and it hasn't been able to fill it's places from those who passed Bexley.

c1403 · 05/10/2023 14:10

Thanks. Will take a look.
We're actually in Medway but go to primary school in Kent.

My daughter was 3 marks off the Medway pass park (parent review had been started).
Kent results due next week and I'm hoping for a pass as she was fairly confident but just wondering when head teacher review may be actioned as her books are also being sent to Medway

To add her Maths score is where she dropped marks considerably on the Medeay. She normally sails through so I'm wondering if she perhaps marked sheet wrong etc, but will never know .

Kent or Medway pass will be enough as we are close to schools in either county.

historyrepeatz · 05/10/2023 15:06

Ooh yes you don't want to be in a position where the books aren't available when needed. I saw on one of these threads that the heads have the results now.

c1403 · 05/10/2023 16:07

I actually spoke to her today and she said she has both Kent and Medway reviews going on but couldn't tell me more.
I did ask what would happen if a child was under both and she said there are ways around it such as copying work etc

So stressful, Kent results are such a long wait 🙄

enigmaticc · 05/10/2023 17:13

@c1403 didn’t the headteacher appeal for your daughter as 3 marks off are not that much.Which cities are under medway?

WorldofKnitting · 05/10/2023 17:35

Everything is hush hush in our school so have no idea what the HT is up to these days (!) but I know of a pupil from last year who was successful with HT appeal and she was 2 points below cutoff (this would probably be a raw mark of 1).

c1403 · 05/10/2023 17:39

For Medway the parents request the review (which I have done)
We also did the Kent test which hopefully she passed, although this test falls under a headteacher review and is done before parents know their result

c1403 · 05/10/2023 17:40

That's good to hear. Only hearing of those not successful at the moment.

historyrepeatz · 05/10/2023 19:07

It's good that these reviews are done before the school application deadline. For some strange reason I don't think that happens here.

@WorldofKnitting I don't know, I was surprised they were so open about it but to be honest they have been very open with the children about the whole thing. Good in some ways, not in others! They told them beforehand they were taking EVERYONE's books so they wouldn't know who was being appealed or not.

@enigmaticc no idea, sorry. as a PP said above, I don't think there is a black and white criteria, perhaps all heads do it differently?

In the meantime...

Hello, new here. My son took the kent test this year and the wait is doing my head in. Particularly hard to take knowing the school know now and we still don't. My son said the head took his maths book, but has no idea if just his or everyone's.
Enjoyed reading about how everyone's kids described the paper, my son has adhd and forgets what he's carrying in his own hand, hasn't been able to describe the paper at all! He's not too stressed but I'm laying here thinking the whole system is wrong, this much pressure so young is sad. But we're trapped - of course we want the best for our kids so we try.
We did no tutoring here, I bought some books from the works and we practiced a bit over the summer but I decided he needed to get in without that extra help because I can't afford it now or after.
Luckily my children attend the local Catholic primary and have a guaranteed place at a very good Catholic comp. I don't know how we would've managed this otherwise. I feel like unless your child is naturally very bright or you're very well off, you're not going to get as good an education - seems classist and wrong to me.

Upwardtrajectory · 08/10/2023 08:50

I’m finding the waiting harder the closer it gets!

when my other DC sat it a couple of years ago, the ones who said it was harder than their practise papers and ran out of time were the ones that passed! Sweeping generalisation I know, but it did tell me that they can’t really have any idea how it went.
Neither of mine could tell me a single question from the paper, and the eldest in particular was not remotely invested in the result. I’ve done less well with that this time round, but hopefully they’ll be ok if it isn’t a pass.

sunshinepremium · 08/10/2023 14:21

Hello, my daughter is worried as she also ran out of time in the reasoning section.

I wonder if we can share scores and raw marks after results are out, as they haven't been shared for a few years? I know people in the past have shared their kids age as well on the other site including months, eg 10 years 5 months, which might help us see the whole picture, or would this be a bad idea?

Lulu1976 · 08/10/2023 17:24

I found this really helpful every time i went through this with previous children , DS is my last ti sit the test, so i will be sharing raw scores/ standardised scores and age on results day in case it helps others like me that needed to see it to help me understand

enigmaticc · 08/10/2023 21:03

@sunshinepremium I think most of the children had trouble with the reasoning section. There were just too many questions in the given amount of time.Just a few children got to finish the reasoning section fully.how many questions did your DC miss out on the reasoning section. My DD missed out on the REASONING part as well.As other mums have explained here the score is standardised if most of the majorities reasoning paper didn’t go well.

c1403 · 09/10/2023 09:39

Re Kent DD said she found it okay and didn't miss any questions but she was 5 off with her mock so who knows.

I do think the reasoning is tricky as not much time. With Medway the NVR was with the Maths and there was no spatial.

My DD said all the copies have been taken away from the past 2 days as they don't want to highlight which child had their copy taken away for the appeals. Maybe the appeal process is getting finalised by the end of this week.
