Hello fellow parents, Just wanted to start a thread on RGS Guildford, which our children will be sitting on 11th January 2020. Not long now.

OP posts:

well that's a sobering calculation! I suppose the only way to look at it is to think it's a process that can't be altered or changed. What will be, etc etc.

123EyesOnMe · 21/01/2020 12:32

@HampshireGirl123...you could be describing my child!

HampshireGirl123 · 21/01/2020 12:36

@GU24Mum I only counted up the children from other schools. I didn’t include the Guildford Grammar boys who I presumed were 13+ and above.

GU24Mum · 21/01/2020 12:43

@HampshireGirl 123 - some of those in the list came from outside but into Y9 rather than Y7 - I know because I know some of them!

Auroborea · 21/01/2020 17:21

GU24Mum is right. Also, it's only academic scholarships that guarantee you a place.

Auroborea · 21/01/2020 17:24

On the flip side, more scholarships are offered than are taken. I know several boys who were offered scholarships last year (not on that list) who went elsewhere.

goobledygok · 21/01/2020 21:33

They also take a chunk from the big feeder right ?

R272727 · 21/01/2020 21:41

@123EyesOnMe how confident are you on those dates for nos with no interview?

123EyesOnMe · 21/01/2020 22:01

@R272727.... if this year is going to follow the same pattern as the last 3 years, then very confident.
Always room for things to change but personally I think thats unlikely in this case.

HampshireGirl123 · 21/01/2020 23:11

@goobledygok I’ve heard that too 😞. Does anyone have any idea how many they take from the feeder school each year (roughly)? Thanks xx

Frazzledmumofboys · 22/01/2020 06:26

If you look at the Lanesborough School website it lists destinations - 23 went from there to the RGS in 2018.

Auroborea · 22/01/2020 08:03

30 joined RGS first form from Lanesborough in 2019. But, they don't automatically 'take a chunk' from Lanesborough. If you are a Lanesborough boy you still have to sit the exam and be selected or not like everyone else. More apply to RGS from Lanesborough than from any other school. Some of these get scholarships, some get scholarship invites, some get subject interview invites, some get yes and some get no.

HampshireGirl123 · 22/01/2020 08:21

@Auroborea So if we assume that 30 ish boys will get into RGS again from Lanesborough that only leaves about 70 to 90 places for all the other boys to ‘fight’ over. The odds just keeping worse and worse 😞☹️

Auroborea · 22/01/2020 08:24

But you have to discount the number of applicants not just places, so the odds look better than in your previous calculation.

Auroborea · 22/01/2020 08:26

Plus, as I explained above, Lanesborough applicants are spread across different categories, some of which you have already discounted.

HampshireGirl123 · 22/01/2020 08:33

@Auroborea You’re right, thanks for making me feel a bit better! I think my glass is half empty rather than half full atm 😉 Just dreading getting a no letter as my son will be devastated 😢 Just wish we could find out a bit sooner!

Pyrfwondering · 22/01/2020 08:38

The odds are no different now than when the boys stepped into the exam room. It's horrible waiting, though...

Auroborea · 22/01/2020 08:45

Keeping my fingers crossed for you, HamphshireGirl123!

HampshireGirl123 · 22/01/2020 08:47

@Auroborea Thank you 😘

123EyesOnMe · 22/01/2020 09:37

@HampshireGirl123....really feeling a lot like you just now. Out of interest, did you apply anywhere other that RGS?Guessing from your name, you're Hampshire-based...

HampshireGirl123 · 22/01/2020 14:25

@123EyesOnMe I’ve sent you a pm

AtiBati · 22/01/2020 16:30

So funny to meet @Mantapeace at RGS today. Our boys went in together for their interviews and I think it went as good as it could have. Now we wait.

123EyesOnMe · 22/01/2020 17:01

Well done sons of @AtiBati and @Matapeace! Fingers crossed for you both...

Mantapeace · 22/01/2020 17:39

@AtiBati so nice to meet you today! Feedback from my son was positive so fingers crossed.. can’t believe Dr Cox did their English interview 😳😬! At least my son didn’t realise who he was so didn’t clam up...

Mantapeace · 22/01/2020 17:41

Interesting that another mum said that of those who entered last year 70 had 2nd interviews... wishful thinking or based on fact???🤷‍♀️
