Hello fellow parents, Just wanted to start a thread on RGS Guildford, which our children will be sitting on 11th January 2020. Not long now.

OP posts:
TaupeAndTeal · 14/02/2020 17:38

We're in the same camp as Sunfish. 12+ recall. Ho hum. Onwards and upwards....

Well done to everyone.

Gargoura4 · 14/02/2020 17:57

It’s a yes for us🥳🥳🥳🥳

Tinytempa · 14/02/2020 17:58

Not sure how to feel about our letter; not a "firm offer" unfortunately, but placed on a "short waiting list". Confused got the impression that RGS didn't operate a waiting list, based on previous threads. Anyway, the bottom line is that if some of the boys with "firm" offers decline a place, and a place becomes available, they will definitely offer DS a place. Can't confirm till after the 6th of March, but might be as late as 13th Marcha! Mixed emotions here to be honest...I suppose we should feel blessed for (yet another) opportunity, but not sure if any of us can cope with potenitially another month of waitingShock. Has anyone else had a similar letter?
This is the only school DS sat for so it'll be this or the local comp (which is also a fine school).

villagegirlatheart · 14/02/2020 17:58

a yes for us too Smile

ErmieMum · 14/02/2020 18:02

Tinytempa - I know of at least 2 from DSschool who got an offer but mums claim they are going elsewhere...e.g Hampton so you never know.....

Hopeful201 · 14/02/2020 18:06

Tiny I have never heard of that before, I would guess your DS thoroughly impressed them but they ran out of spaces. I know they slightly over offer but don't offer to anyone who they don't think will cope with the school. Sounds like your DS was unlucky to be right on the cusp...There is a lot of movement with places so I wouldn't be surprised if you do get a place. PITA having to wait even longer though!

Sunfish · 14/02/2020 18:10

@TaupeAndTeal we will be going back at 12+. DS seems to be ok after the initial disappointment, trying to put a positive spin on it. I am also thinking of giving Hampton a go for the 12+ next year too, as they allow you to take that, without having sat this year. As you say onwards and upwards - congratulations to all the yes candidates.

goobledygok · 14/02/2020 18:24

@Tinytempa I know a couple who are considering other schools as well so hold on to hope. I know what you mean by waiting another month though...I've been near exploding this last week.

Auroborea · 14/02/2020 18:29

@R272727 There are lots of very sporty boys in my son's year. He isn't one of them but likes to have a go. Despite not being one of the really sporty lot, he has lots of opportunities and lots of matches - too many for my liking in fact as I'd rather sleep in on Saturdays!

Auroborea · 14/02/2020 18:38

Congratulations to everyone who got good news today - it's genuinely an amazing school and your boys will love it! I don't know anyone who has regretted choosing RGS. Thanks if you have less than ideal news. If you have an uncertain result hope it turns positive eventually, if it's a no hope your boys end up in a school where they can shine and thrive and be happy.

TaupeAndTeal · 14/02/2020 19:09

Very kind words @Auroborea ❤️

Tinytempa · 14/02/2020 19:51

Here's hoping!

Well done to all of you who secured firm offers today. Smile

R272727 · 14/02/2020 20:38

@Auroborea can you confirm how big the class sizes are please? Are there any sports clubs at lunch time or any clubs?

Oldtimer2020 · 14/02/2020 22:00

Class sizes in first two years 25 ish. Yes lunch time clubs eg. Warhammer, table tennis, chess club. I’d ask all these things at the offer holders’ afternoon.

Jugglingact101 · 15/02/2020 09:11

Does anybody know if RGS has a bus service? My boy is not too keen on the train

Pyrfwondering · 15/02/2020 09:41

@jugglingact101 RGS doesn't have a school bus, but there are public buses that go very close to the door. Lots of boys travel in on the train... Dr Cox paints the train journey as part of the vibrant social life of the school and how GHS and Tormead and RGS students get to know each other and make friends

BooRadley7 · 15/02/2020 09:46

@Jugglingact101 there is no bus service, but I think it’s actually good for them to get the train, as it makes them more independent from an early age. I think another poster mentioned RGS boys are all a bit more “streetwise” if you want to put it that way.

BooRadley7 · 15/02/2020 09:48

@Pyrfwondering totally agree 😁

IvySquirrel · 15/02/2020 10:04

We live on the edge of Guildford so my sons got the public bus. They wished they could be on the train. It's the social hub! RGS boys get pretty streetwise quite quickly.

toetheline20 · 15/02/2020 10:16

Congratulations to all with a yes. Ours was also a yes. Unfortunately although RGS says that we qualified for a bursary, the school has insufficient funds to offer us support. Therefore we have no choice but to turn the hard earned place down. Thought it worth posting to give hope to anyone who is currently on the waiting list. Wishing all the best to you and your DSs for a fantastic experience at this lovely school xx

sazzy5 · 15/02/2020 12:27

Well done all that got a place and so sorry for those who didn’t.
I was worried about the whole train thing but it turns out it is fun for the boys. In later years they chat and meet girls, it is a great social thing. I went the first morning and wasn’t required at all!
Sport is much stronger than we thought. The school has allowed boys to stay at the school when perhaps they would’ve been managed out by other schools. They push the boys but don’t pressurise them. That is my view anyway.

Jugglingact101 · 15/02/2020 12:59

Do you know if they play football?

Pyrfwondering · 15/02/2020 17:31

@Jugglingact101 RGS doesn't play football... St John's Leatherhead is the only one we went to that played football. Reed's, St George's and RGS do rugby, hockey. cricket.
