Any Dh's go there? or DS's or DD's now?
We looked around. Out of our league price wise I think, but we were impressed with the young people and the ethos, were we duped?

OP posts:
SmileysPeople · 03/12/2006 12:12

Was dazfaz still there? he was a creepy unpleasantman, can't imagine why they EVER emplyed him. But I knew the HT before him who was an alcoholic and tried to bring a horse into Chapel and then had a fit and pretended to die. Now that was legendery, did you hear abot that. It was traumatic aged 11yrs.
If in cedarhome did you ahve Jenny and Spenny I thouhgt they were OK?
I was in the same year as Andrew Sederman (derek's DS) he was headboy we were quite good friends but have lost contact.
This is SO weird, and dull for others!

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 03/12/2006 12:18

Yes, I did hear about the horse incident, it all sounded very sad and alarming, I think some of the staff were very upset by it too . dazfaz was still very much there, he was still there when I left! Greasy, posturing little man. Jenny and Spenny were there - JMR was also my tutor, we had a very "turbulent" teacher-pupil relationship, to say the least. They were a laugh, though, weren't they?

I idn't know Andrew Sederman, but his little brother Richard was in the year below me. Do you remember Mr Gobat? He was housemaster of Orchard when I started.

It is weird, this! And yes, probably quite dull for others....

SmileysPeople · 03/12/2006 12:29

Yes Mr. Gobat was my house master and i got on all right with him, but lots of people couldn't stand him. I thought he was quite idealistic and overly ernest but didn't mind too much (I was too!)
I did actually have Pd a couple of times, and remeber having to clean the muck spreader by actually getting inside it, thought this was all quite a lark tho. maybe too much Enid blyton when younger on my part.
I wasn't however too keen on all the outdoor ed and haven't climbed a mountain since I left. Lots of people loved this tho, and I've always now viewed it as good experience and opportunituies for kids that way inclined and maybe not necessariy academic.
I think DH's awful experience made me view mine so much more positively, he thinks it sounds like heaven compared to his school. It was mostly positive for me. Were you actually physically bullied by other girls? I neveer thought that would have happened there.

Some of my contempoaries were: cathy pereira
Dora Sonariwo, Ross Nicholson. Any bells?

Tinker · 03/12/2006 12:31

Had a boyfriend who went to Downside - he didn't have a clue about women and kissing. I was his first snog at 19

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 03/12/2006 12:42

The physical bullying was generally boys. In my case I was just hurt/hit/kicked/fingers bent back, my stuff smashed etc. The bullying from girls tended to be more mental - ostracising, putting repulsive items in pencil case/bed, name-calling etc. A friend of mine was quite seriously sexually assaulted by the same group of boys who were bullying me. They held her down and ripped her clothes off. Another girl in my year who was considered "ugly" (when she arrived the leader of the boys' gang turned to me and said "I bet you're glad she's here, you're not the ugliest girl in the school any more!") had a plate of hot mashed potato thrown in her face. I remember sitting down at meal times and all the boys standing up and moving to another table, because they said I put them off their food. If I tried to go into our common room I was pelted with compasses/pens and told "get out, you're too ugly." I had to sit with the first years in chapel because the boys would throw their hymn books at me if I tried to sit with our year group. I don't want to drone on about it but it was miserable, and the staff turned a blind eye. I remember walking into a classroom late for a lesson, and everyone making pig noises and jeering. The teacher just waited for them to stop. That was a teacher I liked and stayed in touch with for a while, too. I haven't really thought about all that for ages. Things got better when we were 6th formers.

I did love the OED though, I still go walking and love mountains although I can happily do without ever going caving again

I have certainly heard of Cathy Pereira and various others who were in her year.... Jo Carbray? Sara Fuller-Sessions? I remember quite a lot of the upper 6th the year I started too, who you might remember - Miles Scholar, Miles Jackson, Tamsin Wheatcroft...ring any bells?

SmileysPeople · 03/12/2006 12:54

God that sounds absolutely awful. cathy pereira was in my year and is still a close friend, I recently told her about Mn so beware she may soon be lurking... others were oriole henry, Claire mcGuiggan, Stephen York (scotttie) Scragg,

got to get the phone back in a bit

SmileysPeople · 03/12/2006 13:08

Youger years I remember Mitchell sonariwo, Nicholas White, velvet someone? oo streching my memory now.
Recently went back to look around when ging nearby and had DS's with me , it was V strange.

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 03/12/2006 13:11

I can imagine it would be very strange!

I haven't been there since the summer after I left.

Did they still have the brown/turqoise uniform when you were there? We had the lurid Lindsay tartan one , I must admit I quite liked it.

SmileysPeople · 03/12/2006 13:27

We had the brown skirts and turquoise/beige or black jumpers. No one had the turquoise though. The uniform was very laid back, any brown skirt would do, and every one wore there own cardies and coats over the jumpers. Oh and every one wore hunter wellies with their uniform. had to be Hunters.
Did any of those names ring bells?

zippitippitoes · 03/12/2006 13:29

is cathy pereira related to margaret pereira of the forensic Science Service?

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 03/12/2006 13:39

Yes, Clare McGuiggan I had heard of, and the Scraggs - Debbie Scragg was a couple of years above me, I think she had an older brother?

Do you remember Tim Moon?

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 03/12/2006 13:39

I do remember a school photo taken before I joined, in which everyone had on the brown/beige stuff apart from a girl called Tamara Bond who had the turqoise one

SmileysPeople · 03/12/2006 13:40

No she's not as far as I know, but don't really know all her realtives. this has turned into friends reunited hasn't it? Sorry evry one else.

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 03/12/2006 13:42

Do you remember Jamie Perry? I knew his little brother too And Tudor Haines - I never met him but knew Cathy and Gwyn, his younger siblings.

If this is annoying anyone, do say so and we will stop it

SmileysPeople · 03/12/2006 13:42

Tamara Bond I knew well. She was the yr below and in Orchard so we were pretty friendly.
I have that photo!!She did like to stand out, she was V pretty and often wore few clothes LOL!!
I have that photo!!!

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 03/12/2006 13:42

LOL this really is weird, isn't it?

Do you accept CATs?

SmileysPeople · 03/12/2006 13:43

Yes knew jamie Perry and Tudor, not well but they were around in my era. Which study did you have in th 6th form? I probably had sex in it.

SmileysPeople · 03/12/2006 13:44

I would if I knew how to, never done it. Tell me how.

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 03/12/2006 13:45

I had a study in the house, so you may have missed it I had friends who were in Marmalade though, I was usually in there. (Did anyone NOT have sex in Marmalade?)

SmileysPeople · 03/12/2006 13:48

No everyone I think, I did. Andrew Sedarman was in marmalade so hung out there alot. I had a tiny one on my own next door.
Study in the house! never in my day! how do you get the boys in for all the sex??

I'm all for single sex schools these ays LOL!!

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 03/12/2006 13:49

Have just tried to CAT you, but you haven't got CATs enabled - you need to click on "contact another talker", and chnge "no" to "yes" in the bit where it asks you whether you want to accept CATs/emails.

If you want to, that is!

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 03/12/2006 13:50

Oh, I know the tiny one you mean - Miles Jackson had that one when I started.

SmileysPeople · 03/12/2006 13:50

Yes I will do, I'm sure we're really boring every one else.
I'll try now but am then going out, but will be back!

SmileysPeople · 03/12/2006 13:53

Think I've done it. Back later.

SmileysPeople · 03/12/2006 17:28

Hi SGSUGS, I think I've done it now, didn't realise you had to pay.
Have been worrying this afternoon that you are Tamara Bond, but then I did say you were V pretty so if you are you can't be too angry.
But then you were in Cederhome....unless you were pretending....ripe ground fer paranoia.
