Any Dh's go there? or DS's or DD's now?
We looked around. Out of our league price wise I think, but we were impressed with the young people and the ethos, were we duped?

Frogs, you're right - I digressed from the OP's question into that quagmire that is the boarding vs day school debate! Sorry, Tinkerboo. If you want more info re Ampleforth I can ask my friend. She is a close friend so I know she and her OH are well pleased with Ampleforth, as is their son. Anyway, my babies will never leave me. If they try, I shall lock them in their bedrooms forever and slide food (toast, pancakes and other flat things) under the door at regular intervals.

chocolatedot · 01/12/2006 16:20

Tinkerboo, it is a very egalitarian school and nor necessarily posh. Ignore all the preceonceptions. Xenia, Eton has no such thing as a "provision for Catholics".

I went to boarding school and absolutely loved it. What are you basing your opinion on Cod?

I wouldn't want my sons to board purely as I couldn't bear them to be away from me, and if they ever were to escape my smothering bosom I fully intend to folow them around the country/world as necessary for all time.

BUT I fully expect them to want to board, once they see the fun and camaraderie the others have, but I wouldn't let them and doubt we could afford it (at least that what we'd tell them)

er my expeirence
dhs and sisters

But i was only 10 ;(

twelvedaysofchristmas · 01/12/2006 16:59

DH's brother in law plus all his brothers went there and really liked it I believe. They go back every Christmas to see the Brothers.

I understand they are now accepting girls into all year groups as well.

What kind of thing would you like to know?

Rhubarb · 01/12/2006 16:59

Arthur Conan Doyle went to Stonyhurst - he hated it!

It is a magnificient place. Had a scandal a few years back though concerning a treehouse, some boys and a priest.

Tinkerboo · 01/12/2006 17:01

Xenia makes me laugh. I wish I could meet her in RL, just the once would do mind you.

Xenia it's the ethos of the school we like, and the fact they don't only take the highest ability or elite we see as a bonus.

But if you are high ability you are catered for and your potential can be reached and all opportunities given.

Xenia how did you get to be so narrow minded? For someone who purports to have such experience you present as very ignorant....something doesn't add up.

So you and some relatives hated it Cod, so EVERYONE hates it?

Do you not see a crucial missing link in your argument?

I liked it, therfore your wrong. Simple logic.

Try harder next time.

ah shit
you forget i am right all the time
like xenia

NotAnOtter · 01/12/2006 17:05

i have heared good about it - a lot of these schools chuck out a 'well bred' child - so much more than academic stuff

zippitippitoes · 01/12/2006 17:06

I see one of their debates was "This house beieves you should have gone to Sedburgh"

Tinkerboo · 01/12/2006 17:07

Again Cod, thinking your right doesn't make you right.
You need to get back to basic logical statements then take it from there.
Xenia is logical just warped ignorant twisted logic.

OP posts:
NotAnOtter · 01/12/2006 17:08

cod you are so POSH

NotAnOtter · 01/12/2006 17:09

do you wear blazers and play golf?

PollyannaInExcelcis · 01/12/2006 17:09

I know someone who went to Ampleforth. Very rich and very messed up.

He liked to go to prostitutes and lapdancers and hit his girlfriends. He also had alot of stories of gay encounters. He also used to drink vast amounts and wet the bed. He was an immense snob as well. He did go 20 years ago though, so I hope/expect it has changed since then.

NotAnOtter · 01/12/2006 17:10

i did not go to boarding school - but have the personality of a girl who would love it. I always wanted to - Mother threatened me with it all the time - wish i had!

Tinkerboo · 01/12/2006 17:11

Is POSH an acronym for something else?

Rupert Graves also went there and was pretty screwed up. That's what I wondering really whether lots of those sorts of stories would come out the woodwork if I asked.

mousiemousie · 01/12/2006 17:13

the kids who were educated by monks at my university (red brick) didn't fit in and weren't happy, even though they were rich

I went to boarding school & loved it but my brother hated it. Same school. Horses for courses.

zippitippitoes · 01/12/2006 17:14

whenever my mum threatened to pack me off to boarding school I used to say can i? I was desperate to go although my brother hated it

AlgernonGetYerTubaOut · 01/12/2006 17:14

Did someone call ?

piglit · 01/12/2006 17:15

I went out with a bloke who went to Ampleforth. He was luvverly.

NotAnOtter · 01/12/2006 17:15

my boyfriend - educated my monks- when i was at university - loved it!
It is horses for courses - these schools offer a lot and parents can usually sense the ethos of the school and whether its right for them

Tinkerboo · 01/12/2006 17:22

What school did you go to Cod? Was it evil nuns that made you into a sceptical meglamaniac? sp?

OP posts:
WonderCod · 01/12/2006 17:54

no not nuns
just bad teachers and uncaring hsouestaff
