@BananaHammock23 Fantastic news!!! I'm so happy for you guys, especially given you were thinking about giving the transfer a miss this month.

Hi ladies
I hope you are all safe and well.
We have our medical consultation by phone tomorrow. Could anyone tell me what to expect during the appointment/what our consultant will discuss/any questions to ask. Thank you all in advance.

ally99101 · 10/12/2020 18:36

Hi @ODAAT260718, what clinic are you with out of interest (if you don't mind saying)?

My consultation was very straightforward and only lasted about 20-30 minutes. So I had a hycosy before the consultation so it was mainly talking about the results from that and then the doctor sort of giving her recommendations so for me that's unmedicated iui as I have regular periods of the sort of normal length etc so no known issues or reasons to use medication. She talked us through the need to purchase sperm etc and gave us the name of the person in the clinic who deals with all of that and also asked her to get in touch with us which she did. She spoke about the consents appointment and then said basically that it's up to us what we want to do, she's made her recommendations but if we want to try medicated we can, if we want to move to IVF quicker we can etc. But her recommendation was to start unmedicated and see how we get on, I think she said she would recommend 3 goes of IUI if I remember correctly.

Take notes and think about all the questions you might have, write them down before the appointment and have them to hand go make sure you cover them all. We asked about sperm motility and a few other things that I forget but the doctor was really helpful and was able to answer all our questions.

She did though say we would use OPK's and we've ended up with blood monitoring, which I much prefer, so if you have a preference or want to know what to expect that might be a good question to ask. There was nothing worse than approaching that first IUI and not knowing much more than we were to call on cycle day 1, book our day 10 bloods and then after that they'd basically tell me when I needed to come in.
Let me know if you have any questions I'll do my best to answer them

LifeIsBusy · 10/12/2020 19:55

@ODAAT260718 what @ally99101 said... Mostly because we're at the same clinic.

We were however originally offered medicated with my wife due to her age but unmedicated with me.

ODAAT260718 · 10/12/2020 21:50

Thank you @ally99101 and @LifeIsBusy. So did they recommend blood tests instead of OPK? I feel like I should know more about the process than I do, I think it doesn't help that all appointments have been by phone. I had the Hycosy about 6 weeks ago and had the results which showed I was below average on my AMH so may struggle with IVF in the future. Will the consultant go through the pro's and Con's of medicated vs non-medicated do you think? We are using Complete Fertility.

ally99101 · 11/12/2020 10:31

No we didn't really talk about OPK's Vs bloods, it was all new to me so I really had no idea, she just mentioned OPK's but then when it came time book in they just booked me for bloods. Knowing a bit more about how they both work, bloods is my preference so now if they wanted to switch it to OPK's I would definitely challenge that. Although I've seen a few people who prefer OPK's so it's really just your preference I guess. We didn't do pros and cons of medicated Vs unmedicated, purely because I have always had regular periods and no known issues so they simply recommended non medicated because there was no reason I would need medication. I would expect they will make a recommendation to you based on your history etc. If you're paying privately though I guess it's really up to you what you pay for, if you'd rather go medicated for example I'm guessing you can.

ODAAT260718 · 11/12/2020 10:54

@ally99101 I've decided to go medicated. We have our nurse consultation next week via Zoom hopefully so they can show me what I need to do with the meds. Off to the gym soon to get fit by January Grin

ally99101 · 11/12/2020 15:17

@ODAAT260718 good stuff, sounds like it went well. It'll be January before you know it!

Can I ask, why did you decide to go medicated? Any reason in particular?

ODAAT260718 · 11/12/2020 15:27

@ally99101 The consultant suggested it may help to increase chances as they can predict when I ovulate easier Smile

BananaHammock23 · 13/12/2020 17:20

Thanks @ally99101 @LifeIsBusy - now the only challenge is believing that I'm actually pregnant. Still hasn't sunk in!

@ODAAT260718 how was your consultation? I was always told it was easier to time ovulation with stimulated cycles as you take something to stop ovulation then a trigger injection! Always interesting to hear what other clinics do though x

ODAAT260718 · 14/12/2020 12:22

Nurse consultation on Wednesday.... Very exciting that things are getting closer. I have been emailed the info on what medicated involves which is pretty much what you said 👍

LifeIsBusy · 14/12/2020 17:42

@BananaHammock23 let me know how you manage to get it to sink in because 22 weeks down the line, 3 scans, a heart beat, stomach kicking and I'm still a bit like erm...

LifeIsBusy · 14/12/2020 17:46

@ODAAT260718 they never mentioned opks to us but we approached the clinic in October last year which at that point they had a satalite office closer to home so it wouldn't have made much sense given bloods are better and even then it would have been standard practice to also do scans...times have changed though

LifeIsBusy · 14/12/2020 17:47

@GrettaGreen how are you guys getting on?

LifeIsBusy · 14/12/2020 17:47

@mabel9 how are you getting on?

GrettaGreen · 15/12/2020 23:17

Thanks for thinking on us @LifeisBusy! DW's AF came yesterday and we're waiting on the clinic to let us know if we can proceed on the next cycle or whether we're going to have to look at other options because of the fibroid. Whilst disappointed it's nice to have a few weeks to rest and enjoy Christmas together.

It's so nice to see more positives on the thread! Hopefully they keep coming and we'll be one of them at some point!

ODAAT260718 · 30/12/2020 14:37

Hi ladies. So, my first treatment was due to start January with my period due in 5 days but I've started my period early 😬😬 medication not being delivered until tomorrow and I feel a bit thrown as thought I had another week. Has anyone else's treatment started earlier than planned? I'm not sure why I've gone into panic mode; excited/anxious I think.

LifeIsBusy · 30/12/2020 15:11

@ODAAT260718 I say you get used to the unpredictable nature and look at this as a welcome to parenthood! I personally have no experience on a period arriving early as i'm normally sitting around waiting for mine to turn up but good luck with your first cycle :)

@GrettaGreen Do you have a plan for going forward now? Hopefully you've managed to enjoy a bit of relaxation over Christmas :)

GrettaGreen · 03/01/2021 21:10

How exciting ODAAT! How are you finding the meds so far? Will you be starting injections?

We're starting round 2 this month. We weren't sure if they'd allow it but then we got a letter confirming the cycle was unsuccessful and that the next one would be managed the same as the last. Meds and all are waiting in the fridge and we're ready to go. Tbh I can't even feel excited - going through the motions atm. We're only on round 2 and I'm sitting working out how long it'll take to gather the money for cycles 4, 5 and 6 😳.

ODAAT260718 · 03/01/2021 22:15

@GrettaGreen that's great you can move forward with round 2. Would you look at IVF in the future? I have savings which I was hoping to put towards a deposit on a house but think I just need to take each month at a time. Yes started injections on 1st Jan which felt a really ideal time to start. I'm so tired but think that's the emotional aspect rather than meds side effects x

GrettaGreen · 05/01/2021 21:39

DW is keener than me to move to IVF if IUI doesn't work but I'm really not feeling it. I think I'd rather do 6 cycles each of IUI and then move to IVF if neither has concieved. You must be getting near the end of your meds by now! How are you feeling? DW has got her AF today so we're right behind you!

LifeIsBusy · 06/01/2021 10:04

@GrettaGreen I also felt the same about IVF, I was a little on the fence as it seemed a little too invasive so we switched to me TTC instead of DW.

ally99101 · 06/01/2021 11:44

Hi everyone, happy new year. Hope everyone is doing well.

Just wanted to post a quick update. Our 2nd IUI has also failed which is pretty disappointing. Period came Monday, pregnancy bloods were yesterday, still asked go in for them despite period arriving. So we're on to our third IUI later this month and I think we'll probably call it a day after this one and move to IVF. FIngers crossed this one works and we don't have to think about that. It's quite disappointing as I have no issues, doctor said my hormones are perfect, we're timing with trigger etc but I know it's just one of these things the chances each time aren't great so hoping 3rd times the charm

ODAAT260718 · 06/01/2021 18:23

@ally99101 sorry to hear the 2nd round of Iui didn't work. Hopefully you won't have to go down the IVF route.
@GrettaGreen are you alternating IUI each month or your DW having 6 rounds and then yourself if needed? I had my 2nd baseline scan today and they have decreased my bemfola as think I will have too many follicles so may need to cancel this month's treatment. I am going back in on Friday to see how many follicles are growing... Hopefully there won't be too many
