NoNoWriMo 2010...anyone doing it?

HappyWithLife · 02/10/2010 18:21

I'm doing NaNoWriMo this year for the first time. For anyone who doesn't know it's a challenge to write 50k words in 30 days, starting on 1 November and ending on 30 Nov. Is anyone else doing it this year?

I've just added you, artifarti. :)

I still haven't thought of a storyline so will have to do some quick thinking.

For preparation I usually write a vague outline of what the story is about. If I've got more time I break it down into chapters and have an outline for each one.

ninah · 26/10/2010 18:12

I have a story and broken it down into 8 main blocks. I am not sure I'll manage the word count but I'll try! Leonie respect to you for writing that amount in that time! have written 4 novels of varying degrees of unpublishable crapness, but each took a year. If you kick my backside this month I'll kick yours in December, I promise!
hi liz red and arti Smile

Zoidberg · 27/10/2010 15:37

ok i've just signed up, have No idea how I'm going to write that many words and only a vague idea of a story that could make it to novel length. And editing is usually my best friend so have to prepare to be tres embarrassed by anything that I do write. But still, need to get going with writing, have been procrastinating for 20 years. Seriously.

100years · 27/10/2010 22:37

Oh excellent, I've just found this part of MN and wondered if I would find a Nano thread and lo and behold.

Last year - failed as I was too too busy
Year before - failed, height of depression
year before that - won and started second novel and got half way through that too

I'm hoping to succeed this year, although I am away from home for a week during November, so I only have 23 days to complete, no worries, first year was done in 15 days, so technically I have 8 days to spare and I type much faster than I did back then.

It's very exciting [hgrin]

I have the first line of my novel

I have scrivener all set up and ready to go.

Bring on the writing.

I have been tot he library and got out several books on creative writing today. Since I have completely jumped in at the deep end with this!

I'm hoping a couple of days doing exercises from there will get the creative juices flowing.

I think ultimately what I want to get from this, is to get over the massive mental block I have about getting started!

Glad to see momentum is building...

Pixie - the idea is that you just write and write and write for 30 days. In order to reach the 50,000 you need to write almost 2000 words a day.

Have had a bit of a setback to my writing time - I was taking ds to a childminder one day a week, but it wasn't working out so he won't be going back. Officially I was supposed to be working on work stuff but I was going to be sneaky and just write instead.

Still have no plot.

Rumpleneckskin · 28/10/2010 14:46

I've never heard of this, it sounds like a fabulous idea. I'm going to do it!

I've never written anything before, I've had ideas but can always think of hundreds of reasons why I can't make a start. Now I've got to start on 1 November and finish on 30 November - and it doesn't even matter if it's a bit rubbishy so I don't have to re-work it till it dies.

Mumsnetters introduced me to geo-caching last year and nanowrimo this year. I wonder what I'll get next year?

artifarti · 28/10/2010 15:20

Have added you Pixie. Smile

Nervous now! But DP is going out on Monday night which makes for a good start! I am a terrible fiddler and self-editor and so find it really hard to just write chronologically without stopping. So this should be interesting...

Dysgu · 28/10/2010 15:22

I have just signed up to this - although I may not make the word count but is worth giving it a go!

I am flamelie on the NaNo site if anyone wants to add me.

Think I have a couple of ideas but still a couple of days to work on something!

artifarti · 28/10/2010 15:24

Hello Dysgu! (I am hoping that this month's book swap book is short and easy so as not to distract me from my Great Work).

Dysgu · 28/10/2010 15:50

Hello arti - oh yes, I know what is coming your way! Hope mine is easy to read late at night - after I am all written out for this and have finished my marking for work! Looks like a manic month!

ninah · 28/10/2010 20:15

Dandy, do it! best thing to take your mind off the horrors of subbing
Mine last one is out collecting rejections, and some sensible feedback means I'll have to rewrite half of it in any event. Meanwhile, I plan to progress a new idea. Doesn't matter if the 50k isn't all coherent, as you say it's only a start on a novel, i tend to aim for around 80k in full. But it will take your mind off the last project, and even when I've written utter crap i've learnt from it, and the overall result is improving.
Go on, you know you want to ....

ninah · 28/10/2010 22:34

100yrs what's scrivener? (panics)

100years · 29/10/2010 21:07

scrivener That is the link to the trial version for Nano, it's basically a piece of writing software that helps you put things together. normal link to it

There is some stuff here about it on the nano site.

ninah · 30/10/2010 19:04

Will have a look at the site later today or tomorrow. It would be good to be forced to write, to have a deadline.

ninah · 31/10/2010 11:49

fab, dandy
and agree with what you say, there's no compulsion to write 50k, could be 10, could be 60, as long as it furthers your project and is more that you would have written otherwise
my new project falls into halves of about 40K so 40 would be good for me
and lol at slovernly and tantrumy that is v close to the bone
mme are you normaly mmelindt?
hi wild, will look you up
