NoNoWriMo 2010...anyone doing it?

HappyWithLife · 02/10/2010 18:21

I'm doing NaNoWriMo this year for the first time. For anyone who doesn't know it's a challenge to write 50k words in 30 days, starting on 1 November and ending on 30 Nov. Is anyone else doing it this year?

Did not get around to finishing this afternoon so have done it now. 1821 words today. And my story is changing, going in a different direction.

Will have a look tomorrow for any I have missed, off to bed now.

Think that my writing of today has been logged into tomorrow since it is after midnight already. Website is so slow again.

It'll be good MmeLindt. Best of luck Smile

Thank you for following my blog, I do really appreciate it.

Thanks Ninah, and Grin at 'all that has happened is someone slept and woke up' - unless I'm unwittingly attempting a new, much crapper, take on Waiting for Godot I'd better up it in the action stakes too.

I've not even registered yet. I have to think of plot first.

Dandy
Sorry to hear that you have had bad news. Don't worry about your writing, it is all but impossible to write when you are emotionally upset. Sit down, have a big cuppa and a chocolate biscuit. UnMNetty and furtive ((hugs))

DandyLioness, I'm sorry to hear you had bad news. But as for your word count, why not set yourself your own target? You don't have to stick to 50k if you don't want to, lots of people don't. What about a target of just writing something each day, even if it is 'I've had a shit day'? Chances are you will write more once you sit down and actually start but if you don't it doesn't matter.
Be kind to yourself.

Sorry you had bad news and a horrible day, Dandy. Write if it makes you feel better (sometimes it has that effect) but most of all, as Happy says, be kind to yourself.

I have the morning off work today - no work and no DS for a couple of hours! Rare bliss! Although it's funny how doing this forces you to be enturely unchoosy about when you write. I was typing away in my lunchhour yesterday even while people came and asked me stupid questions about budgets and what time it was in Nairobi.

Dandy don't worry, & don't beat yourself up. Writing isn't easy when you're going through stuff. I did an MA and then didn't write a word for 3 years - stuff happens. There are people who write in January instead, so you could always look at this month as prep for that.

Think I have added most of you as buddies - very heartening and encouraging to see your word counts, even if I'm trailing. (In case you missed it I'm jollylion)

Think my battery has died in the laptop which is a pita - it just shuts down randomly without warning Hmm

Dandy - Sorry you've had bad news. :( I'm only on about 500 words so far so not much further ahead. There's still loads of time left to catch up.

dandy sorry you've had a hard time - don't feel guilty about word counts! this is a voluntary thing after all, not a case of winning or losing. If you progress your project in any way overall this month that you would not have done without signing up it has to be a good thing. Even those 250 words - bet you they might not have got written otherwise.
Personally I am way, way under the average daily target for 50k but I have thought of some new plot implications, new character aspects, a bit of satire. So I could stop now really and be a 'winner'!
Today was pretty intense, tests and interview for pgce, got back in time to collect dc, have just put them to bed and cleared up some rotten pumpkin (yeuch). My head is empty. But I will try and do something.

Sorry to hear you are having a tough time, Dandy. I'm not but did no writing yesterday and managed a couple of hundred words during breaktime this morning!

I am a teacher and I have my class assembly next week - so that is taking up my writing time!

I am off to London for a conference on Friday - I have to be on the boat at 5.45am to catch the 7am train! I plan on writing on the way (so hopefully will get a seat!!) so that will make such an early start slightly more worth it! Not sure whether what I write at that time of morning will be worth reading, but I figure it will add to the word count and I can edit it at a later date!

I think I am also writing chick lit now! However, I also managed to start a novel for young adults and something of a horror story, (I think, not my usually kind of thing but maybe those Hallowe'en vibes were still hanging around.) So, even though my grand total has not topped 1500 yet, at least I have something done and am enjoying writing again.

woohoo dandy. I haven't managed to crack the four figure barrier yet!
dysgu it's good to hear you can find time to write if you are determined, I know what teachers' hours are like and was worried this year would be my last!

Well done Dandy!

I am having so much fun with this. The story is going crazy, but I think I have a plan now. Trying to get to 8000 today, I need to hit 10,000 by the weekend because I will have zero time then to do any writing at all without distractions.

My Mum is being terrifically supportive Hmm. She thinks it is "drivel." She hasn't read a single word I have written. So I am slightly crushed by that! But I am not going to be stopped by negativity, I already know it's going to be shit, that's half the fun of it - it's so wonderful to just be creative and know that it doesn't matter if it's good or bad, it just is!

lost count a bit and can't be bothered with site while it is so slow but cracked the 4 figure count today!
Lightly my mum was the opposite, still just as useless in the end 'very nice dear' lol

You guys are doing so well! Keep at it! LightlyKCF, that makes me so sad when families/friends/partners aren't supportive. 10,000 words is brilliant. You should be so proud of yourself to be that committed!

I don't bother mentioning it to my Mum anymore. I did try and explain to her a while back what I was going to do, and was met with a blank look and silence. I keep my friend and my kids updated as they all think it's great. Apart from that I just type away to my heart's content.
Well done everyone, keep going.

Yaaaayyyy....I've broken the 10,000 word mark. I'm so chuffed, as I'm now 1/5th of the way there and actually feel like it might be possible after all. It's my first NaNo and I'm determined.
This challenge has been so good for me already. I feel a huge sense of achievement every day, and instead of whiling the day away doing not much of anything at all, I am actually creating something out of nothing, applying myself, and proving that I can do it.
Keep up the good work everyone Grin

Well done Happy, that's great! I just got past 7,000 when a pesky cough woke DS up early from his nap. DP is out tonight though so hoping to motor through some more. I am loving this too - it's forcing me to just write rather than agonise over every word and constantly self-edit. I already know I'll have to completely redraft lots of things and that some of it (i.e. most of what I wrote yesterday after very little sleep!) is crap but I am actually telling a story. It's great fun!

Well done! I'm just over the 8000, going to do a couple of hours later today I hope.

Blimey, you're all doing really well! I've stalled somewhat - kidding myself I'm 'mulling it over' which is kind of missing the point. I just need to crack on again. Have next week off so hoping to catch up then. Am really enjoying having it at the forefront of my mind though, actually thinking about the story rather than just thinking 'I should be writing about...'something''. Keep on keeping on Smile.

I'm still miles behind but hoping I can catch up. :o

One thing I would say though is to remember to make a back-up copy of your work as you go along, either on a memory stick or print a copy out. There's usually a 'Back up your novel' day but every year there are always a few people who lose everything because their computer has died or the file got corrupted.

I'll fall behind over the weekend I think. When the house is full of kids it's impossible to think Grin. I could do it at night but my oldest doesn't go to bed til about 11 on a weekend (she's 16) and I'm just so tired by that time. You'll all have overtaken me by Monday!
I'm going to print out what I've done so far. I am on virgin media, which backs up automatically and you can access it from any computer apparently, but I've never actually tried it out so don't want to risk it.I don't have a printer at the moment though so woll have to pay for ir at the library.
