Looks like it will be a bad one. I'd say there will be a lot of power cuts so make sure you have an alternative means of cooking/heating and stock up on torches, candles etc. Not forgetting the aul' bread........

I have a family member obsessed with weather events who is comparing this to the Night of the big wind too. He says it will be significantly worse than Ophelia. What I recall is that was high risk of trees falling because it was in Summer and leaves were in bloom but the bare trees now should be safer. It's more damage to homes and public areas from the strong winds that we are concerned about.

I agree @Apologiesbut normally but i think this could be a bad one. Unfortunately there is a boy who cried wolf effect. I started a thread last week here about the bizarre (IMO) week long late opening of my kids school, we didn't even have ground frost some of the days. It was no different to any other winter in my life. The same school then had a half day a few days later (scheduled) and parents are becoming pissed off. I think people have been complaining, so much so that the school sent an email at 11am about an event at school tomorrow pretending that there wasn't a storm coming and then followed up later saying they had to no choice but to close. It implied they wanted to open but were told to close by the Dept. Being too cautious will inevitably backfire and lead to risky behaviour because people lose faith in others judgment.

I'm usually not bothered by the wind, sleep right through it but I'm quite worried about this one, it looks ferocious, I'm hoping the power isn't off for too long, let's hope it passes quickly, hope everyone stays safe and warm

I've been reading up on the night of the big wind. It was dreadful reading the press coverage of the day.

Son is just taking off from Dublin to Manchester. I'll be glad when he's home safely. Even if we are getting a pasting here.

Guess the government have to make a call on this . If they don't and there is massive damage then they will be accused of not dealing with it well. I have just had an event cancelled that runs from 7:30 - 9:30pm tonight . As it is not so supposed to hit before 6am and midday it seems like overkill.

@Soonenough when this happens, it’s to allow people time to get home or to buy supplies then hunker down in time. It’s not overkill.

🤣 love it. I had to do - don't make unnecessary journeys ... don't swim in the sea ... to my team when telling them not to come in tomorrow.

Taytocrisps · 23/01/2025 21:41

Right, I've coal in case we've no power i.e. no heating.

I've taken in all my flower pots (well, the smaller ones) and they're sitting in my enclosed porch.

Today's bin has been taken in and moved to the side entrance.

I don't have an alternative means of cooking or heating food, so fingers crossed we don't lose our power for too long. I might invest in a small stove for future power cuts (been thinking about it for a while), but I didn't want to panic buy something and then regret it.

I've lots of candles.

I forgot to buy water but I'll fill the kettle, water jug, saucepans etc. before I head to bed, in case we lose our water supply. We've had issues with loss of water recently.

I'll fill the flask with boiling water before I go to bed.

I've emergency supplies of Baileys, Christmas pudding and whipped cream. Feck the bread!

Just kidding, of course I have bread!

Have I overlooked anything?

Poor Teresa - she'll never live that down! 😅

I've been looking at this website
Wind Gusts Forecast Map | 24 Jan, 19:40 | 52.4°N 11.5°W | Zoom Earth

and if you do the animation, the worst of the winds seem to be later than I thought - I was hoping that it would be bad overnight, starting 2a.m., and would be quieter by the morning.

It looks like the strongest wind will be later in the morning, right into the daytime, in the East of the country.
It also looks like the S coast might get back to normal much sooner while the rest of the country is still having high winds.
Hope we all get through it OK, be safe wherever you are!

Taytocrisps · 23/01/2025 21:51

DD has prepped by going to her boyfriend's house. I guess love will keep them warm 😀

VonHally · 23/01/2025 22:00

I'm on the East Coast. God I'm a bit nervous here on my own (I live by myself). Big open playing field at the back OMG.

Still, having done as much prep as possible, bins and pots in the shed, all bits and pieces from the garden in there also but I'm sure there's something lurking down the back! Power banks fired up, found an old transistor radio (overkill probably, but hopefully so.) Water jugs filled. I have these fab little sensor lights that stick on the wall or wherever, usb charged. Have a gas bottle heater, Super Ser if the electricity goes.

My big worry is something flying into the house and breaking the windows. Yes I hope I am overthinking.

So folks, off to the leaba soon and I'll take out my hearing aids, hear nothing! Put on my "flaps" (eye mask) and see nothing, and hopefully drift off eventually. What will be will be in the morning and I have to remember that the whole country is going through the same thing.

Misshollys · 23/01/2025 22:25

Night all, hopefully we'll all get through this unscathed. We've prepped as much as possible, have filled almost every utensil/container with water as if power goes then water goes too as it depends on being pumped into the house. Have candles/torches and a wind up radio 📻 😀 Have filled the bath to use in toilets if power goes.
Ds who has ASD is extremely unsettled so hopefully he'll sleep, the dog is asleep already, stay safe everyone 💕

DeanElderberry · 23/01/2025 22:47

stuff stowed, food water etc in. I'll poke everyone else's guardian angels as well when I say my prayer to my g a.

Stay safe

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 23/01/2025 23:14

Stay safe! It's already very wild in Cork and it isn't 2am yet!

Cleaningismycardio · 23/01/2025 23:31

In a red zone and got the alarm today just before 6pm. Have a family funeral tomorrow which is apparently going ahead. Will have to see if the weather really is that bad tomorrow. Going to be monitoring things closely and make a decision tomorrow. Any one else in a similar position?

honeyfox · 23/01/2025 23:37

It's a bit scary. Tried to call my dad in the west around 10pm and couldn't get him on either house or mobile, no connection at all.

Also a girl I know is supposed to be getting married tomorrow, she's not in one of the worst areas but still very worrying whether it will go ahead.

BarbaraHoward · 23/01/2025 23:49

Night all from NI. Windy here but normal windy, the worst isn't to hit us til morning.

theDudesmummy · 24/01/2025 00:50

In west Galway and am moving house tomorrow! I guess all the action will have to be in the afternoon!

Taytocrisps · 24/01/2025 03:59

Just woke up - some big gusts out there. We still have power though. I've put on my electric blanket and hopefully I cam drift off again.

Itiswhysofew · 24/01/2025 04:00

I'm in Tipp. The dog has me awakee. He's very restless, so I've come downstairs for a cuppa.

Sooo windy here. 81km, apparentlyShock Hoping the roof doesn't blow off or chimneys fall. I always worry about chimneys when it's windy.

Hope there's no power outages. I see there's a few close by.

My niece is due to fly back from Heathrow tomorrow with Aer Lingus. They've cancelled the first flights, so far. She's getting the last flight, so, hopefully...

Hope everyone's OK.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 24/01/2025 04:00

Yes same. Also awake and listening to the gusts. Power still on.

Yes. Internal doors are rattling.

Wide awake and the wind is howling, gusts are very intense, dog is lying on me and is very unsettled. There seems to be a lot of power outages around us but so far we're still ok.
