Looks like it will be a bad one. I'd say there will be a lot of power cuts so make sure you have an alternative means of cooking/heating and stock up on torches, candles etc. Not forgetting the aul' bread........

having guests over tomorrow evening, what do you think it will be like then?

(cooking today!)

Probably still dodgy on the roads, even though the wind will have died down.
Trees down, etc etc. I'd wait to confirm, it might be OK but it's hard to tell what the aftermath will be like.

I heard one met person saying that this might be the worst storm we ever had, like ever😱 They probably meant 'in living memory', but scary enough!

Stay slán sabhailte wherever you are!

The last great storm in Ireland was in 1839. It caused enough damage there right through to Liverpool according to reporting which is scant

"The calm before the Big Wind of 1839 was particularly eerie – The Irish Times" https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/books/the-calm-before-the-big-wind-of-1839-was-particularly-eerie-1.3257684

Estimates of how many died vary from 300 to 800, a remarkably low figure given the ferocity of the storm

The calm before the Big Wind of 1839 was particularly eerie

4,846 chimneys fell, and waves topped the Cliffs of Moher on the Night of the Big Wind

It's sounding grim.

"Forecasters have even warned pet owners to keep their dogs on leads amid fears they could be swept away by strong waves on the coast as the 'high impact' storm closes in."

Inevitably the Mail's click bait headline (I clicked) warned people to tie down their dogs.

DD has quite a long commute out of Belfast so I am urging her to consider staying overnight, rather than try to drive in tomorrow morning. There was quite a famous news clip perhaps 20 years ago of a female reporter in SW Ireland reporting on a storm and barely able to stand up. And this might be worse. DD is not listening. I hope she, and everyone else, remains safe and it is not as bad as feared.

DeanElderberry · 23/01/2025 12:13

I am also getting very irritated by various RTÉ people 'not being able' to pronounce Éowyn. Even if they didn't grow up reading LotR, or listening to the BBC radio adaptation, surely they saw the movies?

Storm Desmond in 2016

DeanElderberry · 23/01/2025 12:16

@alteredimage , I hope your daughter sees sense. it isn't going to be a night to be out.

I've just remembered a shed door has come loose - I'll have to try to block it somehow, I don't want the whole shed to come adrift.

Where does she work? It's vanishingly unlikely she will be expected to commute tomorrow.

Thanks. I am not too worried in that I am sure her employer or her boss will sort something out for those who need to be in. We simply don't the same extremes of weather in London so she might not understand how bad it can get. Or perhaps mums/ma's are not listened to as they should be. 🙂
Again, stay safe. To add to the gloom there is a tornado warning in SE England.

Apologiesbut · 23/01/2025 13:12

I want to preface this by saying I do think tomorrow’s storm sounds like potentially bad so I can I understand the red warning but I think this whole warning thing is an extension of Covid.. I think it could really increase anxiety in children and people long term and it’s over-hammed. We’ll create a situation where people can’t access risk for themselves.
I know people will come back with “what if you or your loved ones get killed by a tree etc “ but I think there’s always risks in life. This could happen due to storm and wind yes ..
We’ve already had several days off due to ice . I actually went to work during the icey spell and the roads were gritted mainly and on Tony’s that weren’t people drove v slowly . It must costs the state millions!
It’s always those who are in jobs where they will still be paid anyway who are most vocal and it’s so,so obvious.
Honestly tomorrow’s does look bad but I’m literally live right on the sea on the west coast and the last few “warnings” re. storms have been the same types of storms I’ve seen all my life with the same damage 🤷‍♀️ The “stay safe” messages constantly are weird and kindof brainwashy.

Mishmashs · 23/01/2025 13:15

Kids school is closed tomorrow. Scotland east coast.

justasking111 · 23/01/2025 13:21

Living rurally and on the coast. We're aware but we have a lot of retirement folks from England who do need warning because they're just not used to our weather. We've rescued vehicles out of ditches, picked up people whose cars just couldn't get up the hills in icy weather.

We've tied up the boat this morning. Know where the matches, candles, torches are.

I think most people in the West of Ireland do take a common sense approach to these things. There are times there is a orange warning and I have no idea until it has passed, I look out and am just like oh it's pretty windy today better wear a hat. We are used to bad weather to put it mildly and do have to just get on with things I suppose its about being able to risk assess yourself really. The warnings are out there what you choose to do with them is your perogative, I wouldn't feel comfortable compelling people like teachers to make it into work though. So I don't really know where I stand on it.

VonHally · 23/01/2025 13:58

Now that Micheal Martin has been appointed Taoiseach after all the ridiculous shenanigans yesterday, maybe RTE and other media will now ramp up its warnings and put this potentially devastating storm at the top of the news agenda, where it belongs.

But we wouldn’t know a weather event was coming unless it was forecast? I think the warnings are appropriate. It gives people a chance to prepare at least. I don’t feel brainwashed.

It’s always those who are in jobs where they will still be paid anyway who are most vocal and it’s so,so obvious.
But obviously most people aren’t going to want to put their safety at risk if it can be at all avoided? The people who’ll be paid anyway are usually at the mercy of other people’s decisions regarding work being open etc, so that’s probably why they’re vocal about it.

Frostine · 23/01/2025 15:36

Live in Cumbria and we are due it , just went out shopping , and got a bit more than usual in case we are better off indoors the next couple of days !
Don't forget to charge up your devices and check batteries etc .

Countrygirlatheart1 · 23/01/2025 15:56

I'm in Northern Ireland and we have a red weather warning. All our schools are closed tomorrow and all the Lidls are closed as well as some businesses.

DeanElderberry · 23/01/2025 16:17

I've brought in three bags of logs and had a shower and washed my hair, so if the electriciy and water are out for a couple of days I won't be too whiffy or too cold. It's quite pleasant at the moment, hard to believe there's a weather beast just off the coast.

mollyfolk · 23/01/2025 17:50

Like the washing the hair idea.

I'll do that. All I've done so far is buy a bottle of nice wine and some cheese and picky bits.

Me too. I thought I'd set off the smoke alarm. 🤣

BarbaraHoward · 23/01/2025 18:00

Me too! Instantly dismissed it to shut it up and then had to google how to find it. 😂

Soonenough · 23/01/2025 18:03

Guess the government have to make a call on this . If they don't and there is massive damage then they will be accused of not dealing with it well. I have just had an event cancelled that runs from 7:30 - 9:30pm tonight . As it is not so supposed to hit before 6am and midday it seems like overkill.
