Looks like it will be a bad one. I'd say there will be a lot of power cuts so make sure you have an alternative means of cooking/heating and stock up on torches, candles etc. Not forgetting the aul' bread........

Calm in Galway City now. Few trees down and I can see men in hi viz on our neighbour's roof.
Never heard anything like it before. Scary.

Itiswhysofew · 24/01/2025 15:00

Calm in my part of Tipp, now. Didn't have an outage, thank goodness. Saw the outage map though😯

Hope people don't have to wait too long to return to normal

VonHally · 24/01/2025 16:20

Survived thankfully with no problems (that I can see anyway!). Hope all are ok.

I noticed though that the windows are opaque now with either sand or salt or a combo of the two. Weird. Got the garden hose at them to shift it off and nearly drowned myself in the process as a sudden gust caught me lol.

Fair dues to the emergency services and ESB crews and anyone else who HAD to be out in it. Well done. And good on Met Eireann too, it was the right decision to have a nationwide Red warning.

Salty sand on windows as far in as Carlow.

Wow! that's really amazing, and shows just how fierce the storm was.

Hope everybody is surviving the aftermath as well as possible.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 24/01/2025 18:14

I hope everyone is OK. Big thanks as always to the good men and women who get out there to remove trees and work hard to get power and water back on. I had the nicest Pjs day today. Didn't get up till 10am, made scones with DD then a little walk and a few house jobs. We are really lucky here in a new development and A rated house, we are insulated from everything. I'm grateful my elderly Dad is overseas on holiday with a relative. My uncle is going to drive my tomorrow to assess any damage. My thoughts are with elderly people living alone in older houses, it must have been so frightening.

Now that you mention it there was something similar on my windscreen this morning.

If we get Sahara sand on our windscreens via the wind I suppose sand from the West coast isn't surprising.

Countrygirlatheart1 · 24/01/2025 20:52

Wind started here in the North Antrim coast around 3 am. I've never heard wind like it before.
Our electric went out at 9 am and has just came back on. Such a relief.

frazzled101 · 24/01/2025 23:10

For anyone whose power was out and it came back on, are you on reduced power?

We have dim yellow lights and tv but that's it. Can't power any kitchen appliances or heating. All trip switches are fine.

Taytocrisps · 25/01/2025 10:48

Still no power here and the phone lines are down. I drove into the nearest town for a hot breakfast and some coffee. Everyone in the locality had the same idea - we're all charging our phones. I was chatting to the friendly lady beside me in the cafe and she's hoping she doesn't miss the Traitors finale 😀. My sister is in Longford and she said the roads are treachorous because of snow.

It's an inconvenience not having power, but I'm relieved we got through the storm ok and my house hasn't been damaged. I heard an interview with a homeless couple who slept in a tent during the storm! That put things into perspective. Very sorry to hear that a man died in the storm. I'm sure it goes without saying but I'm beyond grateful to the ESB workers and the Council staff who are probably working long hours right now, restoring power and clearing roads of fallen trees.

Glad it wasn't worse for you OP, but what a complete pain to be without power. Hope you're up and running soon.

All good here, couple of roof tiles off, hope we can find someone soon to sort that before too much rain gets in. 😬 Definitely got off lightly.

Itiswhysofew · 25/01/2025 13:22

My windows are covered in dirt. Only cleaned them last weekConfused
Going to go and see if it's salty😂

VictorianScreenTime · 25/01/2025 14:18

Power still off with us too. Just been for a swim and shower at the local pool. Similar to you @Taytocrisps half the town had the same idea. I hate swimming pool changing rooms at the best of times but this was next level🙈

Still, I’m very grateful to be clean!

Taytocrisps · 25/01/2025 14:27

Happy to report that the power is back now.

I heard one of the regional reporters say that the wind was so strong that it blew his front door open. And he has a five barrel lock on his door!

Electricity back about half an hour ago after nearly 36 hours. Hooray for the ESB workers. No major damage here that I can see but I haven't looked at the west side of the house yet. Met Eireann got it right, and people seem to have reacted wisely.

Good grief😲

deeahgwitch · 25/01/2025 21:20

My mother has a memory as a child of her bedroom window blowing in. Suburban Dublin back in the 60s.
But she's not sure if it really happened. Sadly her parents are dead and there's no one else who would know or remember.

Misshollys · 26/01/2025 10:17

We lost power for a few hours Friday night but I'm preparing to possibly lose it again. The winds are really picking up again in Storm Herminia and its raining quite heavily. I've seen some dates for the restoration of power to some parts of the country are late into next week and beyond. Its making me appreciate when we have it. Hope everyone else is doing ok.

Bbbabs · 01/02/2025 22:10

Anyone else still without power? 9 days of it now and it's miserable. Had to dump everything from freezer and hand-washing clothes for 6 people. I am so bloody fed up

DeanElderberry · 02/02/2025 07:37

I'm horrified that people are still without power - 45 thousand according to the RTÉ website. Mine was only out for 36 hours, then another 8 hours the next night, and know how grim that was.

I'm sorry you and others have such an ordeal.

We need a 10 year plan for undergrounding the network. People keep stressing the rarity of the wind speeds, but in the last couple of years I've had 24hr + power-cuts from wind, from snow, and from lightning strike - and as we have been being warned for at least 25 years, climate change means we're going to have more frequent more sever weather events. Well past time to stop reacting and start planning

deeahgwitch · 02/02/2025 08:29

@Bbbabs That's terrible you are still without power.
