I didn't buy my usual bottle of Olivia's oil in Aldi a couple of weeks ago because it was over £6....today...it's £7.29 😳

Why?

@imtryingtoleave get with the program. Everyone is talking about it, not just on MN.

MotherFeministWoman · 01/07/2024 00:50

I bought one of those spray bottles to make it go further.

Coldia · 01/07/2024 00:56

Rapeseed oil is an abomination.

You're probably better off buying lard if all you want to do is fry things.

i feel your pain op £8 bloody 40p in sainsburys.....

Mine was £8.95 from a small local Sainsbury's!!

JurassicClark · 01/07/2024 01:19

I’ve swapped to using half olive oil, half corn or sunflower oil. Although the was on Ukraine’s made that shoot up as well.

Noosnom · 01/07/2024 12:13

Yes, it's silly money even in Aldi now. I did a double take and went back to check I hadn't misread the shelf price ticket incorrectly.

Climate change will send food prices rocketing.

Roselilly36 · 07/07/2024 19:17

I know it’s really expensive, DH is still buying it.

Girasoli · 07/07/2024 19:19

Sometimes TK Maxx has good deals on Olive Oil. It's usually flavoured though rather than plain.

Girasoli · 07/07/2024 19:21

I've switched to pretty much only using oil for salad, and for shallow frying that odd spray stuff or butter. (I don't like vegetable oil)

EatMoreFibre · 07/07/2024 19:55

The latest olive harvest was done and dusted over half a year ago so any recent prices hikes must be due to other reasons - my money is on the new Brexit-related checks

I was incensed enough to send this pic to my sons the other week! Tesco.

There was a disease which killed loads of trees I think. maybe that's why 😞

British rapeseed oil. Much cheaper and good quality

Rapeseed oil is not good for you. After doing some research we have switched to sunflower oil. We use olive oil sometimes but mainly sunflower, and more often than not, we use butter.

If you look at most Vegetable oils, you will find that it's actually made with rapeseed, so just the same.

I agree, it's only 50p a block. I also save fat from bacon, tip most of it into a small bowl or jar and put in the fridge and fry my eggs in what's left in the pan. I then use the rest on other days.

The olive oil doesn't seem all that bad for a whole litre though, surely it will last a long time?

Quacking4it · 07/07/2024 20:33

It's confusing. I'm using a cold pressed organic one which apparently is acceptable. I think you have to be careful as to how they are processed.

roses2 · 07/07/2024 20:33

Article in the paper two days ago saying prices are going to go up again. Don’t hold your breath on the price going down!

Gcsunnyside23 · 07/07/2024 21:18

It was a tenner in Tesco's for olive oil as that was the only size they had left! I got the rapeseed oil instead and noticed no difference except it was 4 quid

Topseyt123 · 07/07/2024 21:26

I noticed this in Aldi today. I did a double take when I saw the price, I don't mind admitting.

I'm sure it was under £4 not all that long ago.

sugarbyebye · 07/07/2024 21:38

Olive oil is the most shoplifted item in Spanish supermarkets now, apparently. One of the harbingers of climate change. Enjoy it whilst you can still get it at all.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/07/2024 21:43

How much of it are you using? A bottle of oil lasts me over a year.

soupfiend · 07/07/2024 21:48

Its the same in Italy and Spain in that its much more expensive than it used to be, shot up in price. I think in reality is only a bit cheaper there than here, certainly in shops we went in (just bog standard supermarkets)

I only use olive oil, running down my reserves now, havent bought some for a while, wish I had picked it up while cheaper. I cant stand rapeseed oil, tastes funny to me and sunflower oil is just bland.

I use a lot of oil as well, I save a lot of fat from meat cooking and try to use that where possible.

I dont know how?

What type of food do you cook? I cook a lot of curries and vegetables, I fry or roast with oil, quite a lot of oil, aubergine in particular takes up a lot an I eat a lot of aubergine. I have quite a lot in salads.

Which would you use for roast potatoes?

I'd use goose fat or tallow myself, though they aren't cheap either.
