I didn't buy my usual bottle of Olivia's oil in Aldi a couple of weeks ago because it was over £6....today...it's £7.29 😳

Why?

The Italians and Spanish fry in olive oil. So do I.

That's nice. You're not meant to though.

Thats for 250ml, very tiny amount for that price. Cheaper to buy it from Sainsburys or Lidl

Yeah but it's fancy pants unfiltered

Who says so. All my Spanish family fry in olive oil.

Yes, it might be nice, Im going to investigate the costco possibilities

Scarletttulips · 08/07/2024 08:01

Go to Crete it’s really cheap and everywhere has it. I brought 3 bottles back.

Are you including the cost of flights and accommodation in 'cheap'!!!!!

I would love to, as I much prefer Greek olive oil, but I'll have to source it here.

I use normal olive oil for frying and extra virgin for salads or to drizzle on food. Would never fry extra virgin olive oil. I've lived in the Mediterranean and this is what they do. Seeing as the Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest in the world I think it's OK to fry in olive oil.

Last time we checked in Costco, a couple of weeks ago, you got 5 litres for around £50/55. Pre covid it was less than £10 iirc but this has continued to rise. We bought a couple of 5l bottles at £20 and a bottle of the fancier one for salads when we could see prices were rising and not looking like they were going to fall. We are halfway through the second bottle and still have some of the fancy stuff left. We only use olive oil so it has lasted. Was hoping by the time we needed to replace the price would have steadied but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

I'm confused by the many posts saying rapeseed oil is bad for you. Does anyone have a source? Both the British Heart Foundation and NHS websites recommend cooking with olive or rapeseed for health reasons.

gardenmusic · 08/07/2024 08:53

I use Hemp seed oil for cooking about £8.50, but that's for 500ml - possibly bigger than the olive oil you are looking at?
Doesn't beat that wonderful olive aroma of a good olive oil, though.

not fit for human consumption, IMO - It messes up your metabolism so badly that I am surprised it is legal to sell. Veg oil and margarine are two of the biggest single causes of obesity/ diabetes, heart disease, etc

I second this. All 'vegetable oils' are not equal.

A study was produced years ago extalling the virtues of rapeseed oil, which I was very surprised about. It was commissioned and funded by, you guessed it, the Association of Rape Seed growers.

Which would you use for roast potatoes?

Beef dripping 😂

SurpriseSparDay · 08/07/2024 09:09

My vegetable and wholefood based pescatarian diet relies on vast quantities of EVOO - as that’s how I like food.

And I use more on hair and skin, too.

Will happily sell any of my less beloved relatives to maintain a steady supply. (The same with coffee beans - my subscription supplier is reluctant to raise prices so they’ve decreased the weight of weekly packages instead. Hmm)

Maddy70 · 08/07/2024 09:17

The lack of rain in spain has increased prices as olive crops were reduced.
Also import costs due to Brexit increase prices

British rapeseed oil. Much cheaper and good quality

That’s what I mostly use - British cold-pressed in glass.
I keep olive oil largely for salad dressing.

Getonwitit · 08/07/2024 09:33

If your Olive oil comes in a clear bottle don't buy it as it will go off sooner, always buy in a tin. My Greek Granny would have had a fit if her oil was in a bottle.

stickygotstuck · 08/07/2024 09:33

I am also puzzled by the comment that you are not supposed to fry in olive oil. I would not 'waste' extra virgin olive oil in frying, that's the one I'd use raw in salads, toast, sandwiches, etc. But if you can afford it, of course you can.

I get through my bottles very quickly. They don't have time to go off.

MrsSwinburne · 08/07/2024 10:10

Is there a cheaper alternative for salads?

Not really, I don't think. Its the olive oil that gives it the flavour. If you use another oil, it will taste different. Although I just read the ingredients on a bottle of ready made, and they had olive oil and rapeseed oil listed, so maybe you could use half and half? Not tried it though.

What would make it go off? Can’t be the glass itself - possibly sunlight? I keep my olive oil in a cupboard anyway.

ContentSolitudinarian · 08/07/2024 11:41

Olive oil is the only oil I use for anything (with the exception of a little bit of sesame oil for Asian dishes at times). I have a very plant based Med diet for the most part. I'd consider avocado oil for salads but otherwise, only olive oil. Health is one thing I am willing to spend for.

Mine are in dark bottles in a cupboard. Gets used too fast to go off.
