I didn't buy my usual bottle of Olivia's oil in Aldi a couple of weeks ago because it was over £6....today...it's £7.29 😳

Why?

I dont know how?

What type of food do you cook? I cook a lot of curries and vegetables, I fry or roast with oil, quite a lot of oil, aubergine in particular takes up a lot an I eat a lot of aubergine. I have quite a lot in salads.

I don't fry every day, that's for sure and when I do, I use a little and spread it around with a brush. Are you pouring spoonfuls of it in? I'm always curious when people go on about the price of oil of how much they're actually using. I know olive oil is good for you, but it's a hell of a lot of calories.

LostMySocks · 07/07/2024 22:07

Tesco's has recently gone down Fri £8.50 to £7 something on our shop tonight.
As others have said it's due to the olive harvest but oil prices were already up due to the war in Ukraine.
We used to be able to buy it cheaply when in France on holiday but on our most recent trip it was about the same price as at home.

Yes, qutie a lot. Most days involves any dish starting with onions and garlic fried off. So I'll use 2tbs for that. Today I did some onions, garlic and peppers and found I needed more (although some of that was animal fat that I had saved so didnt need too much actual oil), probably about 4tbsp in the end

Aubergines and courgettes soak up oil like no ones business.

I try to batch cook though so if I cook something that uses 4 tbs of oil, that is shared among a number of portions so per portion I probably only consume a tbs in each dish, atlhough sometimes more, so aubergine parmigiana is lots of oil, something like polenta, or my roast cauliflower, I will use around 3 or more tablespoons per cauliflower and that will do me 3 portions (just made some more today)

I am actually dieting but dont measure my fats (or dont pay attention to them anyway). I do eat a very high fat diet. I only care about my protein, liquids and calories

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 07/07/2024 22:11

I swapped to sunflower oil and honestly haven't noticed a difference in cooking with it.

Is now a good time to invest?

JustPleachy · 07/07/2024 22:19

Thanks for that tip @SparklingPinkCat

Frazzledteacher · 07/07/2024 22:28

I switched to rapeseed oil a while ago because of the prices. Made in the UK too.

How much of it are you using? A bottle of oil lasts me over a year.

What do you use for making salad dressings if it lasts you that long?? I have salad every day from late spring till autumn and most days the rest of the year, I make vinaigrette with EV olive oil, I go through it pretty quickly.

soupfiend · 07/07/2024 22:52

Yes salad dressings use a lot I find that, plus things that we cook are normally 'sizzling' dishes, so prawns in garlic and chilli oil, or tarkha dhal, that has sizzling spiced oil over the top.

A mozzarella or burrata, pour oil over that, I also always fry my rice off before cooking.

I use a lot of oil!

We don't eat assembled salads much. I just eat things individually on the side of the plate or straight from the garden or fridge when I feel like them. I ferment a lot of vegetables too, then eat that undressed, so it's only the 2% salt for that.

I think you could use a lot less. For frying , you only need enough to stop the food sticking to the pan so a non-stick pan helps and for roasting you don't have to drown the veggies in oil either.
I think a bit of fat probably helps absorb your body absorb the vitamins, but I suspect some people use way to much oil.

Applepencilplant · 08/07/2024 06:04

Climate crisis related price increases will only get worse.

Costco often has good prices for Olive oil if you know someone who is a member.

I don't have salads at home so much and if I did, I would buy a vinaigrette. I accept that would mean having additives and preservatives.

It's not considered a healthy oil, is it? An alternative is using olive oil (or one of other recommended ones) but less of it.

Yes olive oil is far healthier. Though not for frying.

I can hardly comprehend this. We ( family of 4) use the best part of a litre a week. As others have said salad dressing base of rissoto, pasta sauces. We tend to buy this one lasts about 2/3 weeks.

That's shit loads

Neurodiversitydoctor · 08/07/2024 07:09

Yup there are 4 of us ( sometimes 5) say 750mls a week is less than 25mls per person per day less than 2 tablespoons.

With respect, you seem to be answering a question I didnt ask!!

I dont want to use less oil, I like it and will continue to. I havent said I want to find ways of using less

I personally think people dont use enough oil. Im used to cooking the way the Spanish or Italians cook the reason the food is so flavourful is lots of good oil

A good curry also needs a lot of oil, the onions need to be cooked for ages and ages.

soupfiend · 08/07/2024 07:31

The Italians and Spanish fry in olive oil. So do I.

soupfiend · 08/07/2024 07:32

Thats for 250ml, very tiny amount for that price. Cheaper to buy it from Sainsburys or Lidl

Do you know what they have in at the moment? Im quite fussy about oil, I only like Spanish or Greek, not Italian.
