I didn't buy my usual bottle of Olivia's oil in Aldi a couple of weeks ago because it was over £6....today...it's £7.29 😳

Why?

There was supposed to be a shortage of it.

xyz111 · 20/06/2024 21:17

I noticed that in Aldi too! I ended up buying veg oil instead.

OMGitsnotgood · 20/06/2024 21:18

I know the price is crazy. It would appear there was a poor olive harvest which has impacted production.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 20/06/2024 21:20

It was very high earlier this year and last year - then last couple of weeks it went down. As we'd stocked up, we thought its going down, don't buy any more aTM

Why the shortage??

Clutterbugsmum · 20/06/2024 21:20

It's because

A) The draught and heat last year affected the olive harvest.
and
B) Some olive groves have a disease which is effecting the olive production.

The olive oil I buy has doubled in price in the last year.

coldcallerbaiter · 20/06/2024 21:22

£7.80 at Tesco for months now
Aldi was a bargain

IrritatedB3dM4ker · 20/06/2024 21:24

Lidl cold pressed rapeseed oil is £1.59 for 500ml

Longdueachange · 20/06/2024 21:25

We had this conversation! I brought a bottle of sunflower oil instead as my petty little protest, but its crap and you need much more. At least a large bottle of olive oil lasts me months, because a little seems to go further.

RedYellowPinkGreenPurpleOrangeBlue · 20/06/2024 21:25

It was £3.99 when I last bought it.

But that was 2018!

Time to buy a new bottle I think. Shock

bluecomputerscreen · 20/06/2024 21:26

because of harvest failures due to adverse weather and plant disease.

it might get quite a bit more expensive.
rapeseed oil is wuite pleasant and nutritionally wholesome as an alternative.

I was going to say this! It's good

TroysMammy · 20/06/2024 21:29

We can choose a bottle of alcohol in work as a Christmas gift. I don't drink so asked for a bottle of Spanish olive oil 😀.

Kitkat1523 · 20/06/2024 21:33

I remember buying that Aldi olive oil for 2.29 ….and it doesn’t seem that long ago 😳

Nellieinthebarn · 20/06/2024 21:49

I only use olive oil for salad dressing now, I've gone over to rapeseed or sunflower oil for most things.

Back in the 70s when you couldn't really get olive oil easily, apart from the little bottles from Boots to go in your ear, my mum used to get a jar of green olives and drain off the brine. Then fill the jar with vegetable oil to cover the olives. After a few days the oil was infused with the flavour of olives, and you could still eat the olives.

Wallywobbles · 20/06/2024 22:11

Massive shortage due to awful harvest. Prices in Greece had doubled.

not fit for human consumption, IMO - It messes up your metabolism so badly that I am surprised it is legal to sell. Veg oil and margarine are two of the biggest single causes of obesity/ diabetes, heart disease, etc

AdoraBell · 20/06/2024 23:57

Harvests being effected. Same as coffee and chocolate.

Augustus40 · 21/06/2024 10:17

I heard the increase in prices was due to droughts in the south of Spain. Though presumably in other regions of Europe in addition.

SparklingPinkCat · 22/06/2024 14:27

I'd recommend this real Extra Virgin Olive Oil that's currently on at a very good price on Amazon ... I buy a litre tin of this every month to use in my bread making. For taking by the spoon for phenomenal health benefits I take a much pricier one (usually £30 a litre) because like with most things, with extra-Virgin olive oil you get what you paid for.

The industrial cotton seed scandal (masquerading as olive oil) is well know in bulk manufacturing of mass produced "Olive Oil" and you aren't necessarily getting what you think you are paying for.

The price Aldi are charging for that rubbish is scandalous but nor for the reasons you think xx

Read some of the info on this product page, do some research, learn what crap is getting sold out there.

It's climate change. There will be a lot, lot more of this sort of thing.

ilovemoney · 24/06/2024 15:23

Quacking4it · 24/06/2024 15:50

British rapeseed oil. Much cheaper and good quality

dutysuite · 25/06/2024 17:03

I haven’t bought it in months because of the price hike.

imtryingtoleave · 30/06/2024 20:51
